SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jennifer Wallace - Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an Author Talk by Jennifer Breheny Wallace\, who will discuss her New York Times bestseller Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It – which features the Wilton community! \nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They pack their schedules with AP classes and resume-padding activities\, while family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety\, depression\, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. In Never Enough\, award-winning reporter Wallace investigates the deep roots of toxic achievement culture\, and finds out what we must do to fight back. \nWallace draws on interviews with families\, educators\, and today’s leading child psychologists as well as an original survey of nearly 6\,000 parents. Through this deep research\, Wallace shows what kids need from the adults in the room is not more pressure\, but to feel like they matter\, and have intrinsic self-worth not contingent upon external achievements. Packed with memorable stories and offering a powerful toolkit for positive change\, Never Enough offers an urgent\, humane view of the crisis plaguing today’s teens and a practical framework for how to help. \nWallace is an award-winning journalist and social commentator covering parenting and lifestyle trends. She lives in New York City with her husband and their three children. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Thrive With A Guide. \nRegistration is required.  Register on the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Poetry Seminars with Judson Scruton: Jorie Graham's To 2040
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a seminar series in which Judson Scruton will take you through a selection of poems from Jorie Graham’s new book To 2040. Because this is a new book\, attendees will need to make their own copies of the selected poems (a master packet will be placed at the Reference Desk so that patrons may copy or scan/email the poems fairly easily). \nGraham’s observations and reflections on trees\, birds\, steams\, visual art\, mythology\, and history are captured in intriguing poetic lines that wander across the page sometimes speaking in the “uncanny idioms of artificial intelligence and machines” but with “precise descriptions of what she sees\, hears\, smells\, and touches. The unfolding drama of consciousness is always an indispensable part of the poem.” (Walt Hunter in The Atlantic) \nTo 2040 is Graham’s latest and 15th collection of poems “shows us multiple potential futures—soundtracked by sirens among the ruins\, contemplating the loss of those species who inhabited them and those who named them.” \n• September 28: I  Are We / On The Last Day / To 2040\n• October 5: II  Dis— / Day / Can You\n• October 12: III  Time Frame / The Vase of Quince Branches You Sent Me / Dawn\n• October 19: CODA  Then The Rain \nJudson Scruton M.A has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. \nAdvance registration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. There is no charge for this program. By registering for the first session you will automatically be registered for all four sessions. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Please email Andrea Sato with any questions.

SUMMARY:Fall Semester with Mark Schenker: A Survey of Literary Utopias (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us on a guided tour of several literary utopias and dystopias spanning several hundred years. \nEver since Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) created the word “utopia” in the early 16th century\, the double meaning of his coinage has informed centuries of Utopian literature in English. (The Greek outopia means “no place\,” while eutopia means “good place.”) Since More’s Utopia\, writers such as Jonathan Swift and Margaret Atwood have created imagined worlds that reveal the dystopian reality behind the utopian dream. \nAfter beginning with More’s masterpiece\, Schenker will survey other literary works from each of the past six centuries—books that engage the quest for societal perfection\, the limits of human aspiration\, and the various meanings of the old saying that “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” \nThe schedule for the series is below (please note that the sessions are not all on the same day of the week and also stretch from September to November):\nSept. 7 – Utopia\, Sir Thomas More\nSept. 14 – Gulliver’s Travels\, Jonathan Swift\nSept. 21 – Erewhon\, Samuel Butler\nSept. 28 – The Handmaid’s Tale\, Margaret Atwood\nOct. 3 – King Lear\, William Shakespeare\nOct. 10 – Station Eleven\, Emily St. John Mandel\nNov. 2 – Cloud Cuckoo Land\, Anthony Doerr. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.  Please email Michael Bellacosa with any questions. \nMark J. Schenker\, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990\, retired at the end of June. A former lecturer in the English Department\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature. \nThese lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. \n

Porcelli’s book\, The Last Dance: The Eagles’ Rise to Extinction\, is about the last season of a collegiate baseball team\, while Silverman’s edited collection\, Astros and Asterisks: Houston’s Sign-Stealing Scandal\, Explained\, covers the 2017 baseball scandal in context. \nPorcelli is an entrepreneur\, baseball coach\, and former professional baseball player who has been involved with baseball for 45 years. He is also the author of Scabs Heal All Wounds\, about his experience playing with Milwaukee Brewers during the 1994-95 MLB strike that caused the cancellation of the 1994 World Series. \nSilverman is a professor and chair of English at UMass Lowell. SUMMARY:Annual Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Event at WEPCO
DESCRIPTION:Wi-Act has the funding to be able to package 137\,000 meals this year and has the workspace to accommodate 650+ packaging-shift volunteers to do that meal packaging. So if you’re available for two hours anytime from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, consider volunteering for a packaging shift. \nPackaging shifts are very lively and run in time blocks 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.\, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.\, and 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Operations are well-spaced over two large production floors at the WEPCO Church Complex. You can register to be a volunteer on any one of those shifts online. \nChildren 7 years old and older can serve as volunteers. They play important roles in the work and get a lot of joy and satisfaction out of it. In fact\, Wi-Act regularly hears moving reports about heartwarming family dinner conversations after the event\, some of them very profound\, led by some of the youngest participants about what they were accomplishing. \nWi-Act is the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee\, composed of congregants from 11 Wilton faith institutions who live by their motto\, “We work together for good!” But in fact volunteers for this meal-packaging event extend beyond those faith communities to encompass the whole of Wilton and beyond. Among those many others from outside Wilton faith communities the “and beyond” now regularly consists of grandparents who join their children and grandchildren to make this a truly intergenerational event.
