SUMMARY:Confronting Acts of Hate in Our Community
DESCRIPTION:Please join Temple B’nai Chaim and invited guests to a special town hall meeting\, “Confronting Acts of Hate in Our Community\,” on Sunday\, Feb. 4\, at 2 p.m. \nIn light of the unprecedented rise in the number of hate-inspired incidents within our local communities\, Temple B’nai Chaim’s Social Action Group to Confront Antisemitism and Hate ─ in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League’s Kulanu Program\, the Riverbrook YMCA\, and the Wilton Library ─ will offer a two-hour community strengthening program led by faith and local community leaders. \nPanelists representing various faiths and marginalized groups ─ including Cantor Harriet Dunkerley (Temple B’nai Chaim)\, Father Reggie Norman (Our Lady of Fatima)\, Sohair Omar (Muslim community representative)\, Sarvesh Damle (Hindu community representative)\, and Rachel Simon\, ED (LGBT+ community\, Norwalk Triangle Center) ─ will share their communities’ sensitivities and experiences with hate incidents. U.S. Rep. Most importantly\, its work will address developing a coordinated system of responses to future hate incidents and help ensure support for those who are victims of such acts. \nRegistration is required\, register online.

SUMMARY:Wilton Candlelight Concerts Presents Escher String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:  \nWilton Candlelight Concerts will present the second concert in its 76th season\, with the Escher String Quartet in a program of works by Haydn\, Bartók\, and Ravel. The concert takes place on Sunday\, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Wilton Congregational Church. \nFormed in 2005 in New York\, the Escher String Quartet quickly caught the attention of key musical figures worldwide and has subsequently built on its success\, becoming known for its beautifully blended sound\, intelligent shaping and depth of musical perception. The Escher Quartet takes its name from the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher\, inspired by Escher’s method of interplay between individual components working together to form a whole. \nThe Escher String Quartet has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. A former BBC New Generation Artist and recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant\, the quartet has performed at the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall and is a regular guest at Wigmore Hall. In its hometown of New York\, the ensemble serves as season artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The 2023-2024 season finds the Escher Quartet embarking upon a major project — performances of the complete cycle of quartets by Bela Bartok\, culminating in a single concert performance of all six at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. \nBeyond Bartok\, the Escher’s will return to many of the illustrious music centers and organizations in America\, such as the Kennedy Center\, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society\, Phoenix Chamber Music Society\, Duke University\, Coleman Chamber Music Association\, and Savannah Music Festival\, among others. \nTickets may be purchased on the Wilton Candlelight Music website\, or at the door: general admission is $30; students are free. \nCandlelight Concerts benefits the Wilton Library Association and happily accepts individual and corporate tax-deductible contributions.  This series is in its 76th season.

SUMMARY:Poetry Seminars with Judson Scruton: Robert Penn Warren
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is a “way of getting your reality shaped a little better.” — R.P.W. \nJoin Wilton Library for a seminar series in which Judson Scruton takes us through a selection of remarkable poems by Robert Penn Warren from his seminal book Understanding Poetry. \nWarren was a major force in American literature during the 20th century. He won major awards in poetry\, drama\, fiction and criticism and is the only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes in both poetry (twice) and fiction (All The Kings Men). His text Understanding Poetry (collaboratively written with colleague Cleanth Brooks) underwent four editions and became a major influence in establishing a new analytical theory for literature. “The New Criticism” consists of the close reading and analysis of a literary text as an object in itself. \nUnderstanding Poetry provides a lens which will be used to discuss Warren’s poetry. It combines close observations of nature and reflections on human action. \nScruton\, M.A. (The Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry)\, taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. Advance registration is required. Register and find more details online.

SUMMARY:Spring Semester with Mark Schenker: Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us through Tennyson’s Idylls of the King\, a Victorian take on the medieval Arthurian legends. \nIn the early 19th century\, the rise of Romanticism in Europe generally\, and in England in particular\, led to a renewed interest in medievalism. Consequences of this resurgence persisted into the Victorian Period and included the revival of the Gothic in architecture and of Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic thinking in philosophy and religion. \nA nationalistic figure from the Middle Age\, King Arthur—who may or may not have been historical—was the subject of treatments by 19th-century writers as diverse as Alfred\, Lord Tennyson and Mark Twain. Earlier\, the 12th-century Geoffrey of Monmouth\, writing in Latin\, placed Arthur in the tradition of British kings\, relying more on his own imagination than on historical sources. In the same century the French poet Chrétien de Troyes introduced the important themes of the Holy Grail\, the court of Camelot\, and the adulterous affair between Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere. \nIn the 15th century\, Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte D’Arthur in Middle English prose while drawing mainly on French sources. Its publication in 1485 made it one of the first books ever to be printed in England. It was this work that Tennyson used when he published his Idylls of the King\, 12 tales of Arthur and his knights\, written in verse and published from 1859 to 1885. \nSchenker will present a program in six sessions with reference also to the source tales found in Malory’s text. Participants will read all 12 of Tennyson’s narrative poems and will be directed to read\, if they care to\, the corresponding stories in Malory\, available online. Mark will emphasize connections and contrasts\, and will place Tennyson’s work in its Victorian context. \nThere is no charge for the program. These lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration is required. Register online. \nMark J. Schenker\, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990\, retired last year. A former lecturer in the English Department\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature. He had taught previously at Columbia\, New York University\, and Trinity College (Hartford\, CT). Outside of academia\, Mark has for over 35 years lectured on literature and film\, and has led book discussion series in more than 100 venues in Connecticut\, including public libraries\, museums\, and cultural centers.

SUMMARY:“Art Asks” Exhibition and Opening Reception at Wilton Library
DESCRIPTION:Artists often ask to exhibit their works at Wilton Library\, and although there is a Summer Show featuring local contributors\, some artists were unable to participate or do not live within Wilton’s boundaries. This February show features several artists who have made such inquiries. Thus\, the topic of questions regarding art seemed like a natural theme for the show. \nEach artist provided the library with questions about their art: what they hope viewers will contemplate when considering the work\, what they typically ask themself when creating\, or what their own questions are as a viewer. Those thoughts will be shared as part of the exhibit\, and the community is invited to think about their queries when viewing the works. \nThese pieces represent a wide variety of styles\, media\, and subject matter. The artists are: Grace Barbieri (Norwalk)\, Cindy Bernier (Norwalk)\, Lacey Bernier (Wilton)\, Shivani De Bree (Wilton)\, Gini Fischer (Wilton)\, and Christian Mouser. \nAn Opening Reception on Friday\, Feb. 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through March 14. A majority of the works are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.
