SUMMARY:“Inside Genealogy Today:  How Family History Became a Growth Industry” Wilton Historical Soc. Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The ease and fast results of DNA testing\, along with ever-growing\, on-line databases of census records\, historic newspapers\, ship manifests\, and sites that can help you “find a grave” (and much more!) have prompted a host of people to embark on a search for their family’s origins. The popular genealogy-based program\, “Finding your Roots\,” hosted by Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. on PBS aims to “get into the DNA of American Culture” as he explores the genealogy of celebrities\, revealing exciting and unexpected results. \nWho knows what you might find? Family history researchers now have a vastly expanded universe of information to mine. Certified genealogist Fred Hart\, Jr. will discuss modern vs. traditional methods of researching genealogy\, including using technology\, DNA testing and internet “trees.” He will talk about how (and why) the field has changed in positive and/or negative directions\, and comment on how the field of genealogy has expanded\, sparking renewed interest in the field. A light lunch will be served. \nFred Hart (b. 1937) is a native of Norwalk\, Connecticut and a graduate of Dartmouth College (AB\, 1958) and the Thayer School of Engineering (MSEE\, 1960). He has held the Certified Genealogist credential since 1993 and accepts clients when his availability permits. He is an active member in several genealogical organizations including Connecticut Ancestry Society where he has held the position of genealogist for many years\, and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society\, where he serves on the editorial Board of its journal\, and where he was elected a Fellow of that Society in October\, 2015. \nMr. Hart has a Wilton connection\, too\, saying “You might want to call me Genealogist Fred Hart Jr. since some might remember my father of the same name who was a Wilton resident for many years before passing away in 1990. My mother\, Eleanor Hart\, who died there in 2007\, was very active in the Hurlbutt Street Schoolhouse and other Wilton organizations.” \nWilton Historical Society members are free; the cost for non-members is $10 per person. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nThe Confucius family tree consists of 80 volumes containing two million names! \n“The revival of China’s love-affair with the ideas of Confucius has taken another significant step forward after 1\,000 members of China’s most powerful aristocratic clan unveiled the first complete edition of their family tree for more than 70 years. Amid the blast of horns and the thumping of drums which shook the ground at the great temple in the sage’s ancestral town of Qufu\, the 80-volume genealogy containing 2 million names was unveiled by the clan’s leading elder in China. . . . The Kong ‘Clan Register’\, which stretches back more than 1\,000 years\, had not been updated since 1937. According to custom it should be revised at 30-year intervals but in 1967 the terror and persecution of the Cultural Revolution made that impossible. . . . It was a history that was brutally interrupted during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976 when Confucius – “Kong Fuzi” in Chinese – was reviled as a “stinking corpse” by Chairman Mao who’s Red Guards were ordered to destroy Confucian artifacts and persecute his ancestors as symbols of feudal oppression. . . In a nod to modern times\, the register will contain the names of women for the first time and will be available on a computer database. SUMMARY:Husking Bee Workshop for Kids at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:In autumn\, after the corn had been harvested\, it was time for a husking bee. According to The Baltimore Sun\, “Corn cutting\, shocking and husking was a backbreaking task for farmers\, taking six or more weeks each fall. One way farmers lightened the workload was to invite their neighbors to a husking bee. The men gathered in the barn\, while the women prepared a fall feast. The men would have contests to see who could husk a basket of corn first. The younger men\, if they were lucky enough to find a red ear of corn\, could kiss a girl before dinner. Among friends\, gossip and cider\, everyone had an enjoyable evening.” \nAt this Wilton Historical Society workshop\, museum educator Lola Chen will discuss harvesting\, husking\, and the pleasures of shared efforts\, and guide the kids in fashioning a corn-husk wreath for the door. The kids will help make their own snack\, sweet corn cake. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Wilton Historical Society members’ cost is $10 per child\, maximum $25 per family; non-members’ cost is $15 per child\, maximum $35 per family. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?\nA “bee” can mean “a gathering of people for a specific purpose.” Quilting bees\, husking bees\, spinning bees\, sewing bees\, apple bees and other bees were common in colonial New England. Many hands made the work light\, as neighbors helped each other with the prodigious and tedious tasks of the time. Bees were as much a social event as a productive gathering.

DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 13. This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic District #1\, Lambert Corner with Former 1st Selectman and Wilton Historian Bob Russell
DESCRIPTION:Join former First Selectman and Wilton historian Bob Russell on a walking tour of the Wilton Historical Society’s preserved buildings at Lambert Corner. To be held on Saturday\, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m.\, the hour-long guided tour of the site includes Lambert House\, formerly known as “Lilacstead\,” which was built on the site c.1726\, and eight other buildings moved there in order to preserve them–Lambert Cottage\, Kent District School\, Hurlbutt Street Country Store and Post Office\, Wilton Railroad Station\, Davenport Barn\, Cannon Family General Store\, 18th-century Cannon Family Corn Crib and the not-to-be-missed George Davenport Greek Revival Privy. The entire site comprises Wilton’s Historic District #1. The group will set out from the porch of the Historical Christmas Barn. All are welcome\, no charge. \nMr. Russell\, Wilton historian and author of Wilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress\, will share some of the interesting stories of the people associated with the buildings. He may well recount the details from a chapter in his book concerning “the most sensational crime in Wilton’s history\, which took place in December 1897\, when the last Wilton member of one of the town’s most prominent families\, a quiet unassuming gentleman schoolteacher\, David S. Lambert\, was shot down in cold blood in his home\, the Lambert House.” \nThe buildings at Lambert Corner were moved to the site of the original Lambert homestead\, at the intersection of Routes 7 and 33\, over the past 40 years. Most of the buildings are now used as shops and offices. The Wilton Historical Society was a pioneer in what is now called adaptive use–historic structures which have been updated for contemporary use. The Society has rescued\, in total\, 18 buildings typical of a New England rural community on three campuses in Wilton\, all visible from Route 7. \nThe tour will end at noon at the Historical Christmas Barn store (150 Danbury Rd.)\, where cider and cookies will be served. SUMMARY:Things That Go Bump in the Night . . . Ghost Night
DESCRIPTION:When night settles on creaky old buildings during the scariest time of the year\, you never know what you may bump into . . . ! This spooky evening for kids ages 8-12 will take place on Saturday\, Oct. 13\, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society. \nDuring a candlelight walk through the dimly lit period rooms\, and up and down groaning stairs of the 1740 Betts House and the 1772 Fitch House\, kids will hear stories of the families who lived there. They will wend their way to the Burt Barn\, where deep in the darkest chamber they will hear classic scary Halloween stories told in the dark. The evening will conclude with games\, cider and donuts. Halloween costumes are optional. \nParents may drop their kids off\, but they are invited to linger and enjoy a glass of hard cider while waiting. SUMMARY:CT Contemporary 2018 and Imagine Alice...
DESCRIPTION:Silvermine Galleries will host CT Contemporary 2018\, which includes work from a selection of galleries that represent the ever-growing contemporary art gallery scene in Connecticut. Opening simultaneously is printmaker Margot Bittenbender’s solo show\, Imagine Alice…. The two exhibitions will run from Oct. 14 to Nov. 10\, 2018\, and the public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday\, Oct. 14 from 2-4 p.m.. \nCT Contemporary 2018\nFeatured in CT Contemporary 2018 are EBK Gallery in Hartford\, Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven\, Melanie Carr Gallery in Essex\, and the artists of the Silvermine Guild. Each gallery will show a variety of new work. Some will focus on a single discipline or theme. Joining the event as sponsors\, Handwright Gallery and Sorelle Gallery of New Canaan will welcome visitors at their in-town New Canaan locations. Silvermine will have a map available for the public. \n“We hope to give the public a chance to see vibrant and surprising works of contemporary art from galleries they might not normally have a chance to visit\,” said Roger Mudre\, director of the Silvermine Galleries\, “and we’re delighted to have the support of Handwright and Sorelle Galleries here in New Canaan.” \nEric Ben-Kiki of EBK Gallery\, located in downtown Hartford\, will exhibit sculpture—with an emphasis on material and object. EBK artists include Donna Forma\, Peter Kirkiles\, Terrence Lavin\, Maureen McCabe\, Adam Niklewicz\, and Peter Waite. Forms include lush\, curvilinear wood; organic objects; and works that merge the industrial and the lyrical. \nFred Giampietro Gallery\, located in New Haven near the Yale University Art Gallery\, will show paintings by Riley Brewster and various works by Jonathan Waters. Brewster writes that his paintings “employ an initiating form\, which operates spatially\, metaphorically\, and structurally as a threshold space.” Waters has worked with sculptors Mark di Suvero\, Charles Ginnever\, and Richard Serra\, and his work includes both sculpture and print collage. \nMelanie Carr Gallery of Essex is presenting the artwork of seven exceptional female contemporary artists all working in Connecticut. They include Mary Dwyer\, Jennifer Knaus\, Janet Passehl\, Rachel Hellerich\, Sarah Rohlfing\, Elizabeth Gourlay\, and Ellen Hackl Fagan. All have a dedicated practice and extensive exhibition record. The focus of the work ranges from contemporary figurative to minimalist sculpture. Carr herself is a Connecticut-based artist who began her studies in visual art after serving in the United States Navy as an Operations Specialist onboard the USS Willamette (AO-180) in Pearl Harbor\, HI. \nCT Contemporary 2018 offers an exciting selection of work from some of Connecticut’s most accomplished contemporary artists and cutting-edge galleries. Silvermine Arts Center is grateful to Handwright and Sorelle Galleries in New Canaan\, and to the Co-Chairs of Silvermine Guild\, David Dunlop and Roger Mudre\, for their help sponsoring the exhibit. The exhibition runs for 4 weeks and will be on view through Nov. 10. \nImagine Alice… Prints by Margot Bittenbender\nWhile she was living in Japan\, printmaker Margot Bittenbender was surprised to find Lewis Carroll’s Alice\, with the Tenniel illustrations\, in Japanese translation in a museum store in Kanazawa. She began to see Alice everywhere—in paintings\, in dioramas by children’s book illustrators\, in manga cartoons\, and even in a café where a costumed waitress served her a drink with a lit sparkler in the glass and wished her a Happy Un-birthday.” \nAn accomplished artist and teacher who spent 12 years living and working in Asia—in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Tokyo\, Nishinomiya\, and Bangkok—Bittenbender wondered what sort of wonderland Alice might have found if the rabbit hole had opened up there instead of in England. Stately mums\, origami butterflies\, a magical mushroom kimono\, a Jabberwock in a bamboo forest\, and many other scenes came to life in her prints. “My Alice and I went walking through Japan together\, observing and dreaming\, seeing the real and the unreal\,” said Bittenbender. Her new solo show\, Imagine Alice…\, reinvents the familiar elements of Alice’s story—rabbits and roses\, pocket watches and playing cards and more—in deftly executed intaglio prints.
