SUMMARY:Author Talk: Charles Belfoure\, "The Fallen Architect"
DESCRIPTION:A tragedy has happened due to an architectural flaw by Douglas Layton. He is sentenced after a guilty verdict but is it really as a result of his design. After prison he needs to assume a new identity and rebuild his life. But he soon finds himself digging up the past in a way he never anticipated. If the collapse was not an accident … who caused it? And why? \nThe Fallen Architect is the latest from novelist Charles Belfoure\, the nationally bestselling author of The Paris Architect\, who’s been called “an up and coming Ken Follett” (Booklist). An architect by profession\, Belfoure graduated from the Pratt Institute and Columbia University. His area of specialty is historic preservation\, and he has published several architectural histories. He has been a freelance writer for The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times\, and lives in Maryland. \nQ&A will follow the talk. No charge. Registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books\, New Canaan. SUMMARY:Annual Household HazWaste Collection Event–TOWN of WILTON
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 13. This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. \nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include: \nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid \nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. Paint and electronics will not be accepted. \nThis annual fall event will be held on Saturday\, Oct. 13\, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot on Wolfpit Rd.. The collection is open to all Wilton residents\, as well as residents of Norwalk\, Darien\, Greenwich\, Stamford\, Weston and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required. SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic District #1\, Lambert Corner with Former 1st Selectman and Wilton Historian Bob Russell
DESCRIPTION:Join former First Selectman and Wilton historian Bob Russell on a walking tour of the Wilton Historical Society’s preserved buildings at Lambert Corner. To be held on Saturday\, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m.\, the hour-long guided tour of the site includes Lambert House\, formerly known as “Lilacstead\,” which was built on the site c.1726\, and eight other buildings moved there in order to preserve them–Lambert Cottage\, Kent District School\, Hurlbutt Street Country Store and Post Office\, Wilton Railroad Station\, Davenport Barn\, Cannon Family General Store\, 18th-century Cannon Family Corn Crib and the not-to-be-missed George Davenport Greek Revival Privy. The entire site comprises Wilton’s Historic District #1. The group will set out from the porch of the Historical Christmas Barn. All are welcome\, no charge. \nMr. Russell\, Wilton historian and author of Wilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress\, will share some of the interesting stories of the people associated with the buildings. He may well recount the details from a chapter in his book concerning “the most sensational crime in Wilton’s history\, which took place in December 1897\, when the last Wilton member of one of the town’s most prominent families\, a quiet unassuming gentleman schoolteacher\, David S. Lambert\, was shot down in cold blood in his home\, the Lambert House.” \nThe buildings at Lambert Corner were moved to the site of the original Lambert homestead\, at the intersection of Routes 7 and 33\, over the past 40 years. Most of the buildings are now used as shops and offices. The Wilton Historical Society was a pioneer in what is now called adaptive use–historic structures which have been updated for contemporary use. The Society has rescued\, in total\, 18 buildings typical of a New England rural community on three campuses in Wilton\, all visible from Route 7. \nThe tour will end at noon at the Historical Christmas Barn store (150 Danbury Rd.)\, where cider and cookies will be served. Comfortable walking attire is suggested. \nWilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress is available for purchase at the Wilton Historical Society’s museum shop\, the Betts Store. \nPlease register for this event by e-mail or call 203.762.7257; visit the Wilton Historical Society online.

SUMMARY:CT Contemporary 2018 and Imagine Alice...
DESCRIPTION:Silvermine Galleries will host CT Contemporary 2018\, which includes work from a selection of galleries that represent the ever-growing contemporary art gallery scene in Connecticut. Opening simultaneously is printmaker Margot Bittenbender’s solo show\, Imagine Alice…. The two exhibitions will run from Oct. 14 to Nov. 10\, 2018\, and the public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday\, Oct. 14 from 2-4 p.m.. \nCT Contemporary 2018\nFeatured in CT Contemporary 2018 are EBK Gallery in Hartford\, Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven\, Melanie Carr Gallery in Essex\, and the artists of the Silvermine Guild. Each gallery will show a variety of new work. Some will focus on a single discipline or theme. Joining the event as sponsors\, Handwright Gallery and Sorelle Gallery of New Canaan will welcome visitors at their in-town New Canaan locations. Silvermine will have a map available for the public. \n“We hope to give the public a chance to see vibrant and surprising works of contemporary art from galleries they might not normally have a chance to visit\,” said Roger Mudre\, director of the Silvermine Galleries\, “and we’re delighted to have the support of Handwright and Sorelle Galleries here in New Canaan.” \nEric Ben-Kiki of EBK Gallery\, located in downtown Hartford\, will exhibit sculpture—with an emphasis on material and object. EBK artists include Donna Forma\, Peter Kirkiles\, Terrence Lavin\, Maureen McCabe\, Adam Niklewicz\, and Peter Waite. Forms include lush\, curvilinear wood; organic objects; and works that merge the industrial and the lyrical. \nFred Giampietro Gallery\, located in New Haven near the Yale University Art Gallery\, will show paintings by Riley Brewster and various works by Jonathan Waters. Brewster writes that his paintings “employ an initiating form\, which operates spatially\, metaphorically\, and structurally as a threshold space.” Waters has worked with sculptors Mark di Suvero\, Charles Ginnever\, and Richard Serra\, and his work includes both sculpture and print collage. \nMelanie Carr Gallery of Essex is presenting the artwork of seven exceptional female contemporary artists all working in Connecticut. They include Mary Dwyer\, Jennifer Knaus\, Janet Passehl\, Rachel Hellerich\, Sarah Rohlfing\, Elizabeth Gourlay\, and Ellen Hackl Fagan. All have a dedicated practice and extensive exhibition record. The focus of the work ranges from contemporary figurative to minimalist sculpture. Carr herself is a Connecticut-based artist who began her studies in visual art after serving in the United States Navy as an Operations Specialist onboard the USS Willamette (AO-180) in Pearl Harbor\, HI. \nCT Contemporary 2018 offers an exciting selection of work from some of Connecticut’s most accomplished contemporary artists and cutting-edge galleries. Silvermine Arts Center is grateful to Handwright and Sorelle Galleries in New Canaan\, and to the Co-Chairs of Silvermine Guild\, David Dunlop and Roger Mudre\, for their help sponsoring the exhibit. The exhibition runs for 4 weeks and will be on view through Nov. 10. \nImagine Alice… Prints by Margot Bittenbender\nWhile she was living in Japan\, printmaker Margot Bittenbender was surprised to find Lewis Carroll’s Alice\, with the Tenniel illustrations\, in Japanese translation in a museum store in Kanazawa. She began to see Alice everywhere—in paintings\, in dioramas by children’s book illustrators\, in manga cartoons\, and even in a café where a costumed waitress served her a drink with a lit sparkler in the glass and wished her a Happy Un-birthday.” \nAn accomplished artist and teacher who spent 12 years living and working in Asia—in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Tokyo\, Nishinomiya\, and Bangkok—Bittenbender wondered what sort of wonderland Alice might have found if the rabbit hole had opened up there instead of in England. Stately mums\, origami butterflies\, a magical mushroom kimono\, a Jabberwock in a bamboo forest\, and many other scenes came to life in her prints. “My Alice and I went walking through Japan together\, observing and dreaming\, seeing the real and the unreal\,” said Bittenbender. Her new solo show\, Imagine Alice…\, reinvents the familiar elements of Alice’s story—rabbits and roses\, pocket watches and playing cards and more—in deftly executed intaglio prints.

Connell and Ellen Dickinson. \nConnell conducts a stirring and contemplative program of works by notable contemporary composers:  Finzi\, Górecki\, Hovhaness\, Paulus\, and Whitacre. Selections\, which range from a setting of ancient Chinese poetry to a song of the anti-apartheid movement\, take full advantage of these high caliber voices and the venue’s vibrant acoustics. Nature recurs as a grounding and restorative theme. \nThe Chamber Chorus\, known for impeccable a capella performance\, is Music on the Hill’s professional choral ensemble. It is featured in a spring and fall concert each year. \nFind the full concert calendar and subscribe to the email list on the Music on the Hill website.

SUMMARY:Skywatch Reprise
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday evening\, Oct. 14\, the Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with Norwalk River Watershed Association\, Wilton Garden Club\, Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, and Woodcock Nature Center will offer a reprise of the educational and enjoyable Skywatch they hosted in November 2016. \nTo be held again at Slaughter Field at the corner of Nod Hill and Piper’s Hill Rds.\, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include sightings of several lunar\, planetary and other astronomical wonders through the telescopes of members of the John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford\, CT. \nThere will be a bonfire near the Piper’s Road entry where makings of s’mores\, hot chocolate\, hot cider\, and other refreshments prepared and offered by members of the Conservation Commission will be available to all. \nAttendees should park along Piper’s Hill Rd. and dress for the weather (as well as care against ticks) including long pants and long-sleeved shirts since the astronomers also will provide an opportunity to lie on the ground to identify some of the celestial bodies overhead. The Commission also suggests bringing a blanket to lay on the ground. \nWhile the event is free\, registration via email will help with planning and ensuring attendees can get up-to-date information about go/postpone to the rain date. Because the Skywatch will occur in a dark environment\, dogs are not permitted for this occasion to avoid any harm to attendees or pets. The rain date is two weeks later\, Sunday\, Oct. 28\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in time to join goblins and witches as they fly past the moon!

SUMMARY:Wilton Election 2018 State Legislative Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:This November is Election 2018\, and the local legislative campaigns will impact Wilton just as much as national ones. To help Wilton residents be as informed and prepared as possible to head into voting booths and cast their votes\, GOOD Morning Wilton is teaming up with the Wilton League of Women Voters (LWV) and the Wilton Library to co-sponsor a CT State Legislative Candidate Forum for the State Senate District 26\, and the State House Districts 125 and 143. \nThe forum will bring together on one stage the candidates in each of the races for those districts:  candidates for Senate District 26–Toni Boucher (R) and Will Haskell (D); candidates for House District 125–Tom O’Dea (R) andRoss Tartell (D); and candidates for House District 143–Gail Lavielle (R) and Stephanie Thomas (D). All six candidates have confirmed that they plan to attend and participate in the forum. \nThe forum is scheduled for Tuesday\, Oct. 16\, 2018\, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Middlebrook Middle School auditorium. The event was originally planned to take place at the Wilton Library\, but organizers changed the location when interest in attending outgrew capacity for the library’s Brubeck Room. \n\nFor anyone who cannot attend to watch in person\, GOOD Morning Wilton has arranged to livestream the forum online. It can be viewed live\, in real time via the link at www.livecloudtv.com/2018WiltonCTElectionForum. The event also will be recorded for re-broadcast on GOODMorningWilton.com and government access as available.\n\n\nThe candidates will engage in a modified\, town hall-style format. The format allows all candidates equal time to introduce themselves\, answer all questions posed by the moderator\, and highlight their goals for serving the community. Candidates will be held to strict time limits for each answer and opportunity to speak.\n\n\n\n\nAudience members at the event will be able to submit written questions; all questions will be screened for legibility\, duplication\, and may be combined or condensed. \nJean Rabinow\, a member of the Steering Committee of the League of Women Voters of the Bridgeport Area\, and Director/Outreach for the League of Women Voters of Connecticut\, will moderate the evening’s event. \nIn addition to the event co-sponsors–Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and GOOD Morning Wilton–other partners in the event include the Norwalk League of Women Voters and student partners from theWilton High School Model Congress.
