SUMMARY:Purposeful Play and Why It's Important for Learning
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library via Zoom for an interactive and informative experience on the importance of play in children’s development and how parents can play more intentionally with their children. The session will run from 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, Jan. 26.  \nThrough play\, children learn how to engage and interact successfully in the world around them. Play is\, in fact\, a critical vehicle through which children achieve healthy developmental milestones. In theory\, playing with our children sounds like it should be easy: there are no rules; there is no script. But\, in reality\, the art of play can be overwhelming and confusing\, especially when the children have not yet developed foundational people-\, play- or group skills. \nIn this session\, Meghan Cave\, BCBA\, co-founder of The Hangout Spot\, LLC\, Connecticut’s first behavior analytic social skills development center\, will outline actionable steps parents can follow to play along with their children\, promoting social success and meaningful learning along the way. \nRegistration required. No charge for the program. This program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library\, SPED*NET\, Wilton Youth Council‘s Free Play Matters Task Force\, and Wilton Public Schools.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Jorie Graham: Poetry as contagious ceremony that might save the world (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library in person in the Brubeck Room for a four-week literature seminar led by Judson Scruton\, who will take us through selected works by the poet Jorie Graham. It hardly matters what the title is: the subject itself is always ‘the outermost question being asked me by the World today.’” \nAdvance registration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. There is no charge for this program. By registering for the first session you will automatically be registered for all four sessions. This lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Please email Andrea Sato with any questions.

SUMMARY:Scherenschnitte Valentine’s Day Card-making Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:According to Quiet Valley Historical Farm in Stroudsburg\, PA\, “Scherenschnitte (pronounced something like Sharon-Sh-knit-a) is the German and Pennsylvania German tradition of cutting paper. Traditionally\, these paper designs were done by folding the paper and cutting to make a continuous design similar to the childhood craft of creating paper snowflakes or paper dolls that hold hands.” \nOn Saturday\, Feb. 5\, from 11 a.m.–12 p.m.\, Wilton Historical Society will be offering a Valentine’s Day card-making workshop for kids\, featuring scherenschnitte and its popular hearts and flowers motifs. The workshop will be led by Museum Educator Catherine Lipper\, who will talk about the history and customs of Valentine’s Day and its rise in popularity during the Victorian age\, and\, of course\, scherenschnitte. Kids will make their own Valentine cards and heart-shaped sugar cookies with a scherenschnitte-inspired decoration. Sweet! \nSuggested for ages 6-10. Members: $10 per child; Non-members $15 per child. \nDid You Know?\n“In the beginning\, scherenschnitte were often used as decorative pieces for birth certificates\, love letters\, and marriage certificates. These tended to incorporate flowers\, birds\, and hearts. Since paper was originally expensive\, old letters or newspapers were often used. This offers some unique insight into the lives of the people who made them. During the Victorian Era\, scherenschnitte was used to make shelf paper for cupboards\, cake doilies\, or table decor. \nScherenschnitte can also create a picture or tell a story. For the Germans\, many of the picture cutouts were based on folk tales. These images usually featured people and activities\, which shares a lot in common with the French tradition of silhouette cuts. Silhouettes\, white images on black paper\, were often inexpensive forms of art work. They were far less costly than paintings.” — Quiet Valley Historical Farm\, Stroudsburg\, PA

SUMMARY:Enslaved Black Residents and Their Descendants: Five Lives from Wilton’s Past — A Talk by Dr. Julie Hughes
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Feb. 5\, from 2 p.m.-3 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will be holding a Black History Month presentation on Zoom. \nWilton’s first Black residents were enslaved by many of the same families whose names now define our streets\, topography\, and historic buildings\, including the Cannons\, Lamberts\, Abbotts\, Beldens\, Raymonds\, Keelers\, and Marvins. We rarely know more than a name and perhaps a baptismal date\, or sometimes a sale price\, for these earliest enslaved peoples. Locating even these scant records – much less tracing the lives of specific individuals – is extremely challenging. Dr. Julie Hughes has conducted extensive original research and brought to light some remarkable findings for the Wilton Historical Society with the help of grant funding from the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. The lives of the few who do stand out despite the flaws in the historical record – because of their own determination\, their charisma\, or thanks to the capacity of bureaucracies for producing and retaining paperwork – tell fascinating\, infuriating\, and inspiring stories of how Black Wiltonians continually advocated for themselves (with a little help from their neighbors) from the 1700s through the early 1900s. Dr. Hughes will present fascinating information in her lecture “Enslaved Black Residents and Their Descendants: Five Lives from Wilton’s Past”. The focus will be on Philes\, aka Gin (Abbott Family); Jane Manning James (Abbott Family); Charles D. King (Lambert Family); Susan Dullivan and Charlotte Gilmore. \nJulie Hughes earned her PhD in South Asian history from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught at Vassar College and Queens College and is the author of Animal Kingdoms (Harvard University Press\, 2013). Since moving to the Wilton area\, she has become interested in local history. She is now an archivist at the Wilton History Room in the Wilton Library and has worked on history projects with the Wilton Historical Society\, Ambler Farm\, and the Gilbert & Bennett Cultural Center. Her most recent work for the Wilton Historical Society was research for the 2020 online exhibition\, Citizens at Last: Hannah Ambler\, Grace Schenck and the Vote (available 24/7 on the Wilton Historical Society website) as well as her talk “Caring for the Vote: Mothers and Suffragists in Wilton\, Connecticut.” \nPlease register via email. Suggested donation is $10. A Zoom link will be sent to attendees the day before the event.
