SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book. \nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration is requested online.

SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.

SUMMARY:Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life — A Live Theatrical Performance by Ginger Grace
DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month\, 30 days of celebrating the joy\, expressiveness\, and pure delight of poetry. What better way to celebrate poetry than by honoring the legendary American poet Emily Dickinson? Join Wilton Library for this interactive production of “Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life\,” created and performed by Ginger Grace. \nDickinson takes viewers on a delirious romp through her life and times. Wit\, wonder and wisdom are the order of the day. The audience finds itself in the midst of life changing events and relationships as Dickinson defies the conventions of her time – and creates poetry for the ages. On occasion\, she steps out of the play\, calls out to the audience for words and ideas\, weaves those into the fabric of the piece – and now\, the possibilities with words are limitless! \n“Animated – informal and personal – you made me love Emily Dickinson.” \nGrace’s acting credits include the national tour of The Presidents (opposite Rich Little). Off-Broadway: The Glass Menagerie; Miss Julie; Faust; and Electra. Regional: Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey; The First Ladies Coalition (written and performed by Grace); The Belle of Amherst; and Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life (written and performed by Grace); Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf; and Doubt. Film: Wedding March by Deborah Savadge; Chris Shomojima’s 6-Minute Mom; and The Trouble with Tuesdays by Martine Sainvil. \nGrace has worked with the CASA Program\, helping inner-city school children create their own shows\, and she thrives on bringing out the voices of children in the theater. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors. \nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place. \nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives. \nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon. \nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home. \nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. Addressing conflicts in a way that reduces challenging behaviors\, improves relationships\, and teaches critical skills;\n4. Dealing with problems before a behavior situation becomes escalated; and\n5. Building skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving. \nRegister online.
