SUMMARY:Ceremony and Reception for A. Robert “Bob” Faesy\, Winner of the Wilton Historical Society's Historic Preservation Award
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14\, A. Robert “Bob” Faesy will receive the inaugural Julian A. Gregory Sr. Award for Historic Preservation at a reception from 5-7 p.m. in Wilton. Join the Wilton Historical Society as it honors Faesy with well-deserved recognition and appreciation at this festive fundraising event. Members and friends are welcome to attend and may request an invitation or purchase a ticket below. \nGiven by the Wilton Historical Society\, this new award recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the preservation of historic places in Wilton and/or recognizes an individual who inspires others by their commitment\, leadership and vision for helping instill a historic preservation ethic in others. The first recipient selected for the award is A. Robert “Bob” Faesy\, long-time Wilton resident\, architect and preservationist. \nNow an Emeritus Trustee\, Faesy’s vision and dedication to historic preservation helped create the Wilton Historical Society’s Museum Complex\, Lambert Corner\, and Cannon Corner. For decades\, he has been a strong advocate for adaptive reuse and protecting Wilton’s historic landscape. \nThe award is named for Julian A. Gregory\, Sr. (1874 – 1939) who was elected the first President of the Wilton Historical Society\, and served from 1938-1939. The Wilton Historical Society was formed in 1938\, prompted by distress over the proposed demolition of an historic barn. According to Bob Russell’s book “Wilton: Three Centuries of People\, Places and Progress”\, a group of citizens were “concerned specifically about the imminent removal of the horse sheds behind the Congregational Church\, and generally about the changing character of Wilton” and shortly thereafter founded the Society. \nProceeds from this event will support the ongoing education and historic preservation mission of the Wilton Historical Society \nTo request a mailed invitation\, please contact info@wiltonhistorical.org or call 203-762-7257.

SUMMARY:Writing a Legacy Letter
DESCRIPTION:This Zoom workshop invites you to write your own legacy letter. \nA legacy letter (also called an “ethical will”) is a written document that allows you to share your life lessons\, express your values and transmit your blessings to future generations. A legacy letter is shorter than a memoir\, typically just a few pages. Writing one is a rewarding experience that creates an enduring gift for family\, friends and other loved ones. \nThis introductory workshop includes discussion and brief writing exercises to help you examine your life history\, explore your values and capture important insights. It offers advice\, encouragement and a model structure to help you draft and complete your own legacy letter. Because this is an interactive workshop\, attendance is limited to 20 attendees. \nJay Sherwin created the Life Reflections Project to educate people about legacy letters and ethical wills; he now teaches classes and workshops on legacy writing and helps people craft their own legacy documents. \nRegistration required. Attendance is limited but a waitlist is available once the session is full. To register and for more information\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Senior Center Book Discussion: Five Days in London\, May 1940
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Senior Center as Michael Bellacosa leads a discussion of John Lukacs‘s “Five Days in London\, May 1940.” \nThis group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May\, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center\, 180 School Road\, Wilton. \nThe five days in 1940 from May 24 through May 28 in London were among the most consequential in world history. Just two weeks after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister\, and with the British Army bottled up backs against the English Channel at Dunkirk\, the fate of Western Civilization hung in the balance. Historian John Lukacs takes us through a fascinating\, behind-the-scenes account of the struggle inside Britain’s War Cabinet between Winston Churchill and Lord Halifax: Churchill advocating standing alone against Hitler even unto death; and Halifax arguing for a negotiated settlement with the Nazi dictator. Even though we know the outcome\, the book reads like a tense political thriller. The Boston Globe said that it “is a relatively compact book\, but it has the power and sweep of Shakespeare’s chronicle plays….One of Lukacs’ impressive strengths is a gripping narrative drive. He is lucid and splendidly readable\, and furthermore\, commands a host of dramatic characters.”
