SUMMARY:"Emanuel" Movie Showing and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:On June 17\, 2015\, nine African Americans were murdered by a 21-year-old white supremacist during a prayer service at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston\, South Carolina. \nThe families of the Emanuel Nine stood in court facing the killer … and offered words of forgiveness. Their demonstration of grace ushered the way for hope and healing across a city and the nation. This documentary powerfully weaves the history of race relations in Charleston\, the significance and impact of Mother Emanuel Church\, and the hope that somehow emerges in the aftermath. \nThis is a stunning movie that came out for only two days this summer. \nThe Wilton Congregational Church will host a screening of the documentary and a discussion after. Two special guests from South Carolina whose lives were personally affected by this tragic event in history will be part of the event:  Polly Sheppard\, a survivor who was left to tell the story; and Rose Simmons\, whose father was killed in the shooting. \nYou will not want to miss seeing Emanuel\, hearing from the lives that were impacted\, and discussing what we can do as a community going forward. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Annual Bake Sale to Benefit the Dylan J. Hoffman Memorial Walk & Family Fun Day
DESCRIPTION:Stop by Village Market on Monday Sept. 23 from 3-7 p.m.\, or Tuesday\, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.\, and get some delicious baked goods to help support the 5th Annual Dylan J. Hoffman Memorial Walk & Family Fun Day to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley. \nDylan passed away five years ago this September and his family honors his memory with these annual events. They want to ‘pay it forward’ to other families who are helped by the Ronald McDonald House just as they were when Dylan spent time in the hospital. \nWhile it actually costs the house around $130 per night to host a family\, the house only charges a family who can afford it $15 per night\, and no family will be turned away if they cannot afford it. The house also has a pet therapy program; in 2018\, 936 people enjoyed spending time with the pet therapy dogs during 128 hours of pet therapy available to families. \nIn 2018 there was a 101.1% Occupancy Rate\, with 240 Family Stays\, and 640 Day Program Guests. \nFundraisers like Dylan’s Memorial Walk are critical\, because 40% of the house’s funding comes from fundraising events like these; another 20% comes from individual donations received from the public; and a small percent comes from company donation matches and third party fundraisers. Last year Dylan’s event raised $38\,000–a whopping $14\,000 over the goal\, which is amazing! \nTo learn more about the 5th Annual Dylan J. Hoffman Memorial Walk & Family Fun Day please visit the event website.

SUMMARY:College Frenzy 2.0: How to Manage and Minimize the Stress
DESCRIPTION:The College Process has come to be viewed as “THE BIG EVENT” in the lives of students and their families. All parents and interested parties are welcome to attend. \nAdmission is free; register online or call 203.762.6334. \nPlease contact Genevieve Eason via email with questions. \nSponsored By:  Wilton Youth Council\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton Presbyterian Church\, Wilton Youth Services and Wilton Library

SUMMARY:“In Search of the Old Leatherman”–A Talk by Nicholas Bellantoni
DESCRIPTION:From 1860-1889\, an unofficial Wilton resident\, the mysterious and silent “Old Leatherman\,” would pass through town every 34 days on his regular route from east to west\, sleeping in caves and eating food that local residents set out for him. Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni\, emeritus state archaeologist\, will present an illustrated talk\, “In Search of the Old Leatherman\,” in which he will discuss the history of this unique individual\, describe some of the caves he occupied and the archaeology done at a few of them\, and will touch on the time he spent in Wilton. \nAccording to Bob Russell’s book\, Wilton\, Connecticut:  Three Centuries of People Places\, and Progress\, two of the Leatherman’s regular food stops were the Nathan (later John) Comstock house at 77 Ridgefield Rd.\, and the Dick Moriarity house in the Huckleberry Hill area\, not far from Rock Lake Reservoir where he had a cave. Bellantoni will also discuss his search for the Old Leatherman’s unmarked grave in Sparta Cemetery\, in Ossining\, NY. The event includes questions and answers\, and a reception. \nThe talk is free for members\, $10 for non-members. Please register by calling 203.762.7257 or via email. \nBellantoni serves as the emeritus state archaeologist with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History and Archaeology Center at the University of Connecticut. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in 1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. He also serves as an Adjunct Associate Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at University of Connecticut\, and is a former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archeologists. He has recently published a book\, The Long Journeys Home: The Repatriations of Henry Opukahaia and Albert Afraid of Hawk.
