SUMMARY:Welcome the holiday season with Wilton Dance Studio's "The Nutcracker"
DESCRIPTION:What makes the holiday season special? Cherished traditions\, music and festive decorations set the stage and Wilton Dance Studio’s 21st annual production of The Nutcracker ballet has them all. This year’s performance is back to delight all ages on Sunday\, Dec. 9 and features more than 50 dancers from Wilton. New and extra special this year are a meet-and-greet with dancers and a toy drive for Person-to-Person to share the joy of the season with those in need. \nThe full-scale production with lavish sets and costumes includes more than 80 students and adults from seven area towns. The ballet will be performed on Sunday\, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Wilton High School’s Clune Center for the Performing Arts. \n“Each year\, parents tell me their young children who come to the show fall in love with our special ballet and want to start dancing\,” said Creative Director and Owner of the Wilton Dance Studio Brenda Froehlich. “Many of our older dancers shared this happy experience when they were younger and carry that magic with them on the stage each year. This year\, to inspire those young dancers\, we’re adding a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity immediately following our 1:00 pm show. We welcome audience members to come say hello to their favorite dancers and see our beautiful costumes up close.” \nA fun part of the Nutcracker ballet story involves the handing out of gifts to children at a festive party. Unfortunately\, many families in our area can’t afford that luxury\, so the Wilton Dance Studio was inspired to host a toy drive at both performances this year. Audience members are encouraged to drop off a new\, unwrapped toy to be shared with a child in need. All toys will go to the local organization Person-to-Person. Kim Collibee of Person-to-Person said\, “We are expecting to serve more children than ever this year\, so the more toys we can get the better.” \nWilton Dance Studio’s Nutcracker is designed to suit to audiences of all ages while also challenging its dance students\, who change roles and learn more complex choreography each year. The performance length is manageable for young children and does not require an intermission. The ballet follows the traditional story of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King\, with music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Professional sets and elegant costumes complete the high-quality production. \nTo buy tickets\, call 203.544.9007 and leave a message or order at www.wiltondance.com\, click on “Nutcracker Performances” download & print the ticket order form. Tickets are also available at the door on the day of the show. \nPhoto Credit: Donner Photographic \n

SUMMARY:"A Charlie Brown Christmas" at the Wilton Playshop
DESCRIPTION:A Charlie Brown Christmas\, based upon the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz\, is back by popular demand and will be presented on the Wilton Playshop stage from Dec. 7-9\, 2018. Based on the television special by Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson\, this holiday favorite was adapted for the stage by Eric Schaeffer. Jeffrey Spector will direct and Christine Titus will choreograph this stage adaptation of the classic animated television special in which Charlie Brown\, Snoopy\, and the other Peanuts grapple with the real meaning of Christmas. \nWhen Charlie Brown complains about the overwhelming materialism he sees during the Christmas season\, Lucy suggests that he become director of the school Christmas pageant. Charlie Brown accepts\, but this proves to be a frustrating endeavor. When his attempt to restore the proper holiday spirit with a forlorn little Christmas tree fails\, Linus helps him learn the true meaning of Christmas. \nRecommended for children of all ages. Approximate running time is 40 minutes. \nTickets:  $20/adults\, $15/ages 12 and under \nFor more information\, visit the Wilton Playshop website.

SUMMARY:Mercury Glass Votive Workshop for Kids at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:In this fun and festive workshop\, kids ages 6-12 will use paint and water to make shiny mercury glass votive candle holders. While decorating their votives\, museum educator Laurie Walker will talk with the children about the origins of mercury glass\, which was originally created as a replacement for sterling silver\, and contains neither silver nor mercury. The children’s second project will be to make their own snack–fruit dipped in white chocolate\, decorated with silver dragees. Very jolly! \nThe cost to participate for Wilton Historical Society members is $10/child\, maximum $25/family; for non-members is $15/child\, maximum $35/family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid you know? \nMercury\, or silvered glass\, is glass that has a silvery appearance. Mercury glass actually contains no mercury\, although at one point there were several manufacturers who attempted to line glass with mercury. This procedure was short lived due to both the toxic nature of mercury as well as its expense\, but may account for the name. Also called silvered glass\, it contains neither silver nor mercury. Mercury glass is\, instead\, clear glass which is mold-blown into double-walled shapes. The glass is then coated on the inside with a liquid silver nitrate solution\, through a hole in the bottom. \nMercury glass was first created in Germany in the early 1800s. It was used as a more inexpensive material for candlesticks\, vases\, goblets\, and other objects. Silvered glass quickly gained popularity in France\, England\, Bohemia\, and the United States. The New England Glass Company showed a large display of the glass at the New York Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1853; included in the display were goblets\, vases\, spittoons\, sugar basins\, tumblers\, and more. \nAlthough some critics dismissed mercury glass as being too showy and looking too mirror-like\, most people found it very attractive. Soon\, silvered glass began to be decorated with enamel\, etching\, paint\, and engraving. In the twentieth century\, the glass was used to make Christmas ornaments and other household decorations.

SUMMARY:Holiday Sweets: Mendiants and Chocolate Bark Workshop for Kids at Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:A mendiant is a traditional French confection composed of a chocolate disk studded with nuts and dried fruits\, usually made during the holidays\, and often given as a gift. Like chocolate bark\, they can be made with dark\, milk or white chocolate. All this and more will be the topic at a Wilton Historical Society workshop for kids. Museum educator Lola Chen will be discussing these holiday sweets as the children make – and sample – some (nut-free)! \nSuggested for ages 6 – 12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10/child\, with a maximum of $25/family; non-members are $15/child\, with a maximum of $35/family. Register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?\nMediants were traditionally studded with nuts and dried fruits chosen to represent the robe colors of the four monastic orders\, or mendicants\, of the church: raisins for the Dominicans\, hazelnuts for the Augustinians\, figs for the Franciscans and almonds for the Carmelites. These friars lived on charitable offerings\, earning them the appellation of “mendiants\,” meaning “beggar” in French. Today any variety of fruit and nuts are used which offers a great opportunity to show off your creativity.
