SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic District #1\, Lambert Corner
DESCRIPTION:Join former first selectman and Wilton historian Bob Russell on a walking tour of the Wilton Historical Society’s preserved buildings at Lambert Corner. To be held on Saturday\, June 8 at 11 a.m.\, the hour-long guided tour includes Lambert House (formerly known as “Lilacstead”)\, which was built on the site c.1726\, and eight other buildings moved there in order to preserve them–the Lambert Cottage\, Kent District School\, Hurlbutt Street Country Store and Post Office\, Wilton Railroad Station\, Davenport Barn\, Cannon Family General Store\, the 18th century Cannon Family Corn Crib\, and the not-to-be-missed George Davenport Greek Revival Privy.  The entire site comprises Wilton’s Historic District #1. \nThe group will set out from the porch of the Historical Christmas Barn. All are welcome\, at no charge. \nRussell\, the author of Wilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress\, will share some of the interesting stories of the people associated with the buildings. He may well recount the details from a chapter in his book concerning “the most sensational crime in Wilton’s history\, which took place in December 1897\, when the last Wilton member of one of the town’s most prominent families\, a quiet unassuming gentleman schoolteacher\, David S. Lambert\, was shot down in cold blood in his home\, the Lambert House.” \nThe buildings at Lambert Corner were moved to the site of the original Lambert homestead\, at the intersection of Rtes. 7 and 33\, over the past 40 years. Most of the buildings are now used as shops and offices. The Wilton Historical Society was a pioneer in what is now called adaptive re-use–updating historic structures for contemporary use. The Society has rescued\, in total\, 18 buildings typical of a New England rural community on three campuses in Wilton\, all visible from Rte. 7. \nThe tour will end at noon at the Historical Christmas Barn store (150 Danbury Rd.). Comfortable walking attire is suggested. \nWilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress is available for purchase at the Betts Store\, the Wilton Historical Society’s museum shop. \nPlease register for this event by e-mail or calling 203.762.7257.

DESCRIPTION:Held on the beautiful grounds of the Wilton Historical Society\, members will gather on Tuesday\, June 18 at 5:30 p.m. for the Annual Meeting and Potluck Dinner. From 5:30-6 p.m.\, members can enjoy beverages and appetizers plus a stroll in the 1740 Colonial Herb Garden. At 6 p.m.\, president of the board Janet Foster will call the Annual Meeting to order. During the meeting\, new trustees and officers will be elected\, those who are retiring from the Board of Trustees will be recognized\, and an award for outstanding volunteer of the year will be presented. \nHaving an old-fashioned potluck dinner following the Society’s Annual Meeting has been a tradition of many years standing. Members sign up to bring a main dish or salad\, and the Society provides beverages\, appetizers and dessert. Members are asked to RSVP to the Society and state what dish they plan to bring. All members–and prospective members–are most welcome! \nThis year\, Wilton Historian and Emeritus Trustee Bob Russell will be providing some historic perspective with an entertaining talk about Wilton entitled “Let’s Not Rush Into This:  Delayed Decisions\, Perennial Problems\, and Some Failed Ventures.”

SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement by Sally McMillen
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Historical Society hosts a reading group that focuses on books with a historical bent. The book to be discussed on Thursday\, June 20 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. is Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement by Sally McMillen. \nIn Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Woman’s Rights Movement\, McMillen unpacks\, for the first time\, the full significance of the revolutionary convention that changed the course of women’s history. The book covers 50 years of women’s activism\, from 1840-1890\, focusing on four extraordinary figures–Lucretia Mott\, Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, Lucy Stone\, and Susan B. Anthony. McMillen tells the stories of their lives\, how they came to take up the cause of women’s rights\, the astonishing advances they made during their lifetimes\, and the lasting and transformative effects of the work they did. \n“McMillen deftly demonstrates how ordinary women transformed their lives and America’s future by rejecting the pedestal to join the rough and tumble of nineteenth century reform politics. Her achievement is to make this transformation accessible yet complex\, commonplace yet extraordinary.”\n–Catherine Clinton\, Queen’s University-Belfast \nParticipants bring a brown bag lunch\, the Society provides a beverage and dessert. There is no charge\, but participants are asked to please register–by email or calling 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:Summer Chorus–Request for Singers for Dvorak Concert
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill is inviting choral singers to join us Tuesdays/Thursdays in July to prepare for our Summer Chorus concert on July 25. No auditions are required; rehearsals and performance will be at Wilton’s St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. \nThis is the 17th year we are offering a great choral occasion for people who enjoy singing and whose regular choir/chorus may be taking the summer off. Come meet new people and enjoy a wonderful singing experience\, with strings\, brass and timpani accompaniment. Please register by June 30\, via email. \nWe will be singing Dvorak’s Te Deum and his Mass in D\, which are not frequently performed and yet lovely–he wrote them in anticipation of his move to NYC in the early 1890s. \nThe Summer Chorus of 60-plus voices meets each July to rehearse and perform a major choral-orchestral work. Participants–music professionals and skilled amateurs–include members of church and community choirs\, high school singers\, and those looking for a choral home. The Summer Chorus provides an opportunity for choral singers to perform a major work in summer when most choruses do not meet\, and it gives singers a chance to get to know others from many area towns and choruses. For more info see the Music on the Hill website and join our Facebook page.
