DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, Oct. 23\, at 7 p.m.\, historian and award-winning costumer Jess Bolduc will\nlead a lecture on the customs and traditions of Victorian mourning at the Wilton Historical\nSociety. \nIn the 19th century\, grief was expressed through carefully observed rules of dress\, etiquette\, and memorial practices that shaped how families navigated loss. From mourning clothing and jewelry to expectations placed on widows and children\, these customs reflected both personal sorrow and wider cultural values. Drawing on both scholarly research and hands-on experience with period attire\, this lecture will provide insight into how Victorians approached death and remembrance\, offering a clearer understanding of daily life\, social expectations\, and the ways mourning helped define an era. The lecture will include historical examples from the museum’s collection. \nAdmission is $10 per person for non-members\, free for Wilton Historical Society members. \nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Diwali\, the festival of lights\, Middlebrook 8th graders and HindiUSA are organizing a SewaDiwali Food Donation Drive on Saturday\, Nov. 1\, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.\, outside the Wilton Stop & Shop\, inviting the community to give back by supporting families in need. \nThe event is part of the nationwide SewaDiwali initiative\, a grassroots movement that brings together individuals and organizations to serve the community during the festive season. They will be collecting non-perishable food items that will be donated to local food pantries across Fairfield County. \nDiwali is a time to celebrate with family and friends\, but also a time to reflect on our values of compassion and service. By organizing this food drive\, these students hope to foster togetherness and Sewa (selfless giving) for the welfare of society\, by promoting the festive and enlightening spirit of Diwali. \nCommunity members are encouraged to donate items such as canned goods\, rice\, pasta\, cereal\, shelf-stable milk and other essential food products. Donations can be dropped off at the collection site located outside Stop & Shop (5 River Rd.) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 1.

From Sunday\, Nov. 2 through Tuesday\, Nov. 4\, the church is collecting gently used coats and outerwear to help keep our neighbors in Wilton and surrounding towns warm this season. \nDonations can be dropped off in Pilgrim Hall at the rear entrance of the church (70 Ridgefield Rd.). Bring your used coats — and even scarves and hats — anytime\, from Sunday\, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. until Tuesday\, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.  \n\nDrive around in back of the sanctuary and bring your donated coats right into Pilgrim Hall\, through the door with the covered porch. \nAfter hours\, simply leave them in the plastic bins located under the covered porch.\n\nYour generosity will benefit several local organizations\, including Bridgeport Rescue Mission\, Open Doors Shelter\, Person to Person\, Pivot Ministries\, and Wilton Social Services. DESCRIPTION:The combined Architectural Review Board (ARB) and the Village District Design Advisory Committee (VDDAC) is charged with providing expert architectural guidance to applicants and design recommendations to the Planning and Zoning Commission in the review of certain commercial and non-commercial development applications.  Consisting of five members\, the entity functions as a combined panel that serves in two distinct capacities depending on the nature and location of the proposal.  The panel serves in an advisory capacity only. The public can attend these open meetings via Zoom. \nRegular meetings of the Architectural Review Board /Village District Design Advisory Committee are held on the first Thursday of each month\, unless otherwise scheduled due to holiday. \nWhen functioning as the VDDAC\, the panel reviews development proposals that are situated in geographic locations known as “Village Districts\,” which are neighborhoods of distinctive character\, unifying architectural interest\, and/or historic value; and\, at present\, include Wilton Center and commercially-zoned sections of Cannondale. Review authority extends to new construction\, substantial reconstruction and rehabilitation of properties; including but not limited to\, the design and placement of buildings\, the maintenance of public views\, the design\, paving materials and placement of public roadways\, signage and other elements that maintain and protect the unique character of the designated village districts. \nServing as the Town’s ARB\, the panel is responsible for the review of special permit and site plan applications involving new construction\, significant site and exterior and/or facade alterations for properties that are not part of a designated village district. \nThe VDDAC/ARB’s overarching mission is to work with applicants in a constructive and collaborative manner so as to foster successful design outcomes that are appropriate to and representative of Wilton’s unique character.  Refer to the Zoning Regulations of the Town of Wilton for further detail and guidance.
