SUMMARY:Wilton HazWaste Collection Event
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 12\, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Rd.). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. \nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include: \nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid \nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. Paint and electronics will not be accepted. \nThe collection is open to all Wilton residents\, as well as residents of Norwalk\, Darien\, Greenwich\, Stamford\, Weston and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver’s license) is required. For more information\, contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs at 203.563.0180.

SUMMARY:Music of the Japanese Aesthetic: Imaginable Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill invites you to its first concert of the fall season\, performed by the women of the 16-member professional ensemble\, the Chamber Chorus\, and by the handbell ensemble\, Jubilate Ringers. David H. Connell and Ellen Dickinson will direct. \nThe two choral works feature settings of Japanese poetry:  The Winter Cantata of Vincent Persichetti is a sequence of haiku written by the great masters of that poetic form; and the suite Tsukimi (Moon-Viewing) by Peter Gilbert is a setting of eight texts\, taken from 1000-yr old texts\, in which each of the eight singers has a solo role. In addition\, the Jubilate Ringers will premiere “Moonlight on the Lake\,” a suite of Japanese songs arranged for handbells by Dickinson. \nThe acoustics and open natural space in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Church in Westport with its walls of windows and soaring ceiling will add to the experience. A $20 donation is suggested but not required. Refreshments will be offered following the performance. Please join us! For more info about Music on the Hill and its busy fall season\, see the Music on the Hill website.

SUMMARY:Wi-ACT Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Meal-Packaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Each year members of the Wilton community come together to participate in one of the most gratifying\, heartfelt volunteer efforts\, the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (WI-ACT) Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event. \nThis year’s meal packaging falls on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, when 700 Wilton volunteers will come together to work across four\, two-hour shifts over the course of a very full day\, to make a difference in the lives of children living in food insecurity around the world. \nIn full\, over the seven previous years of this event\, Wilton has packaged more than 1\,000\,000 meals\, each one providing a highly nutritious meal in a compact package. What’s more\, the program nourishes children in mind as well as body\, as recipient children are fed in educational settings\, helping contribute toward breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. \nWilton Rise Against Hunger volunteers also help meet food sufficiency needs here locally as well\, by bringing non-perishable food items to the event for local food pantries. \nFor this year’s event\, Wi-ACT has set the same goal as last year of 150\,000 meals to be packaged in one day\, but financing for the bulk ingredients to meet that goal has become a bigger challenge this year. WI-ACT pays for the meal components in advance from the organizer\, highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. at a cost of 31 cents per meal. That’s a bargain for these highly nutritious meals that feed over 400 children (at the 150\,000-meal level) for every day of an entire year but that price is an increase of two cents per meal over previous years and presents a major part of the financial challenge of again reaching the 150\,000-meal level\, to the total of $3\,000. \nA new feature of this year’s event will be a 40-ft. ocean-going container on site at the WEPCO Church Complex (36 New Canaan Rd.) where the meal-packaging is done. Some meals will already be pre-loaded from other events\, but the majority of the meals it will contain are to be from this Wilton event. Once the Wilton event ends and all of the meals packaged that day in Wilton have been loaded\, the container will be sealed and immediately driven dockside to be loaded on a ship and delivered\, most likely to Somalia. \nAnyone who would like to volunteer for meal-packaging is welcome to participate. Individuals and families (with members as young as 7-years-old who take on the very important “runner” responsibility\, up to senior citizens) can join in the work to make it an uplifting and exciting full-family experience! Interested participants can sign up for a shift online. \nOrganizers are asking for community members to consider donating to help pay for the bulk ingredients so that Wi-ACT can hit the goal of 150\,000 meals. All funds raised go to pay for those bulk ingredients. Donations can be by check made payable to “Rise Against Hunger\, Inc.” noting “Wilton CT event” on the memo line\, and should be mailed to 6 Glen Hill Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or donated directly to Rise Against Hunger for this Wilton event at a Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. website dedicated for the Wilton event.
