SUMMARY:Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids at the Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:The Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop at the Wilton Historical Society teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. This month’s workshop is on puddings and cakes. \nIn the 1796 book American Cookery: Or the Art of Dressing Viands\, Fish\, Poultry and Vegetables\, and the Best Modes of Making Pastes\, Puffs\, Pies\, tarts\, Puddings\, Custards and Preserves\, and all kinds of Cakes\, from the Imperial Plumb to Plain Cake\, by Amelia Simmons\, no fewer than 36 “reciepts” for puddings are included\, as well as 37 for cakes! \nBut not all puddings are sweet\, nor are they all made for dessert\, as we generally think today. Wilton Historical Society museum educator Laurie Walker will be discussing puddings and cakes at this workshop. Potato Pudding\, Sunderland Pudding\, Rice Pudding – the common ingredient in all of these is milk. Cakes\, on the other hand\, can be anything from a large yeast cake (like Election Cake) to a small cake (like Shrewsbury Cake)\, which we would more commonly call a cookie today. The kids will make a bread pudding and some honey cakes with updated recipes from the ones originally published in 1796. \nAll participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards – as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes”\, New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard\, pepper pot soup\, scalloped tomatoes\, dressed macaroni and cheese\, gingerbread cakes\, maple syrup tart and Johnny cakes. \nThe workshop is suggested for ages 6-12. \nThe cost to attend for members is $10/child; non-members are $15/child. Space is limited—please register by email or calling 203.762.7257. \n

SUMMARY:Pockets\, Aprons\, and Sewing Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:In the well-known nursery rhyme “Lucy Locket lost her pocket. . .\,” have you ever wondered how a pocket could be lost? Learn all about this essential item of dress for 18th and 19th century girls at a workshop for kids. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, “From the 17th century to the late 19th century\, most women had at least one pair of pockets\, which served a similar purpose as a handbag does today. They were usually worn underneath their petticoats . . . Many pockets were handmade and they were often given as gifts. Some were made to match a petticoat or waistcoat. Some were made over from old clothes or textiles. Pockets could also be bought ‘readymade’.” \nWilton Historical Society museum educator Laurie Walker will talk about how pockets were used and worn\, and show the kids how to cut out a pocket from colorful material and sew it onto an apron. A fully functional\, washable apron with a “custom” pocket is the result. Kids will help make their snack\, freshly baked sugar cookies with “pockets” of jam. \nThe workshop is suggested for children ages 6-12. \nThe cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child\, with a maximum of $25 per family; non-members’ cost is $15 per child\, with a maximum of $35 per family. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nEighteen Maxims of Neatness and Order\, written by Theresa Tidy in 1819\, lists the essentials for a pocket:  “It is also expedient to carry about you a purse\, a thimble\, a pincushion\, a pencil\, a knife and a pair of scissors\, which will not only be an inexpressible source of comfort and independence\, by removing the necessity of borrowing\, but will secure the privilege of not lending these indispensable articles.” \nHowever\, many pockets were stolen–in the 18th and 19th centuries\, thieves known as ‘pickpockets’ removed men’s wallets and cut the strings of women’s pockets.

SUMMARY:"Guys and Dolls" at The Wilton Playshop
DESCRIPTION:Based on the stories and characters by Damon Runyon\, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows\, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile\, his girlfriend and nightclub performer\, Adelaide\, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler\, Sky Masterson\, for the dough\, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary\, Sarah Brown\, as a result. \nGuys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana\, Cuba\, and even into the sewers of New York City\, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong. The show features some of the most cherished show tunes in American musical theatre\, including\, “Fugue for Tinhorns\,” “Luck Be a Lady\,” and “Sit Down\, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” \nPerformances: \nApril 26\, 27\, May 2\, 3\, 4\, 9\, 10\, and 11 at 8 p.m.\nApril 28 and May 5 at 2 p.m. \nTickets are $35/adults\, $30/senior and students. \nVisit  the Wilton Playshop website  for more information and tickets.

SUMMARY:Choral Concert: Music of the French Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill presents an exquisite choral experience that will include the rarely performed works of French Baroque composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)\, including his “Te Deum\,” “Regina Caeli\,” and “Messe a 8 voix et 8 violons et flutes.” The festival and chamber choruses of Music on the Hill will be joined by organ\, trumpets\, strings and timpani in the acoustically rich and resonant church sanctuary. \nIt will be a special afternoon of music\, inspired by the lovely gardens and buildings of the Palais de Versailles\, where many of these musical gems were composed and/or originally performed in Charpentier’s lifetime. Living at virtually the same time as the Sun King\, Louis XIV (1638-1715)\, Charpentier and his music are representative of a distinctive era in French history\, when absolute monarchy reigned\, and France was widely recognized for its rich\, indulgent and breath-taking culture and arts–many say the greatest in French history.
