SUMMARY:The Wilton Playshop Presents Stephen Sondheim’s “Into The Woods”
DESCRIPTION:One of Stephen Sondheim’s most popular and beloved works\, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated and emotionally resonant show that masterfully weaves together the stories of some of our most cherished fairy tale characters. With a brilliant score that showcases Sondheim’s unmatched lyrical talent\, the musical brings characters like Cinderella\, Little Red Riding Hood\, Jack (of Jack and the Beanstalk fame)\, and the Baker and his Wife together in a shared quest that is at once whimsical and profound. \nInto the Woods takes audiences on an enchanting journey through the woods\, where dreams\, desires\, and wishes intertwine\, and the consequences of those wishes become more complicated and far-reaching than anyone could have anticipated. As the story unfolds\, Sondheim’s intricate storytelling offers layers of humor\, darkness\, and deep introspection\, creating a timeless narrative that resonates with audiences across generations.

SUMMARY:Free Youth Gardening Program at Trackside
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding youth gardener?  The free Green Teens youth gardening program’s spring sessions have started at Trackside Teen Center. All rising middle and high school students are welcome. No gardening experience is necessary — just an interest in nature and in helping others\, as the program is rooted (no pun intended!) in community service. The program is held Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. at Trackside\, from May 14-June 11. Sign up any time. The summer session Mondays 9-11 a.m. from June 23-Aug 11.  \nAn initiative of the Wilton Garden Club (WGC) and Trackside Teen Center\, Green Teens is led by experienced WGC gardeners. Its participants engage in hands-on activities like designing garden beds\, planting\, maintaining\, harvesting as well as learning about pollinators and how to cook with the produce grown in their gardens. They also hear from occasional guest speakers and make creative garden art projects. All of the produce grown is donated weekly to the Wilton Food Pantry and the fresh flowers grown are cut and arranged for the Wilton Senior Center. \n“Green Teens goal is to get more young people involved with creating and maintaining vegetable gardens\, to teach them about the importance of healthy foods\, and to give back to the community\,” Laurie Musilli\, co-chair of WGC’s youth gardening committee\, said. “There’s something in this program for everyone.” \nTo register\, contact Musilli via email or Pam Nobumoto via email. Sign-ups are welcome at any time; registration is ongoing. For more information visit the Green Teens page on the Trackside website.

SUMMARY:DVCC 23rd Annual Voices of Courage Spring Luncheon [SPONSORED]
DESCRIPTION:The Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC) will host its 23rd Annual Voices of Courage Spring Luncheon on Thursday\, May 15\, at Tokeneke Club in Darien. This year’s keynote will be given by nationally-recognized speaker and advocate Ashley Bendiksen\, who will share her personal journey as a survivor of teen dating violence and speak to the critical need for prevention\, awareness and community support at all levels. Tickets and sponsorships for the event may be purchased on the Domestic Violence Crisis Center’s Voices of Courage webpage. \nWith a message rooted in both lived experience and field expertise\, Bendiksen will explore the complex dynamics of intimate partner violence — what makes it difficult to leave\, the red flags young people often miss\, and what she wishes she had known earlier. She will also address how families\, schools and communities can better support youth and survivors of all ages through prevention education\, open dialogue and advocacy. \n“In sharing my story\, I hope to empower others — especially young people — to recognize unhealthy relationships early\, speak up and know they’re not alone\,” Bendiksen said. “Education and awareness can change\, and even save\, lives.” \nBendiksen is a sought-after expert on domestic violence\, uniquely specializing in how abuse impacts youth. She has spoken at leading conferences\, including NOVA (National Organization for Victim Assistance) and the National Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation (CESE)\, and has delivered expert testimony in support of a Massachusetts bill mandating employment protections for victims of abuse. Bendiksen is also the founder of the Blue Hearts Project\, a global storytelling platform for survivors\, and was featured in an award-winning documentary. Additionally\, Bendiksen serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Resource Center and co-owns Island Youth Coaching\, a consulting and life coaching agency dedicated to supporting and empowering youth. Learn more on Bendiksen’s website. \n“All too often\, people think domestic violence doesn’t happen in Fairfield County — but I can tell you it does\,” DVCC CEO Suzanne Adam said. “Voices of Courage is not only a fabulous event\, it is critical to our mission. Funds raised from the luncheon ensure we will be there to answer the call when a domestic violence victim needs our services.” \nLast year\, DVCC provided direct services to 3\,619 survivors of domestic violence across Stamford\, Norwalk\, Darien\, New Canaan\, Weston\, Westport and Wilton. All proceeds from the luncheon will benefit DVCC’s mission to provide effective services\, support and education for the prevention and elimination of domestic violence in Connecticut communities. \nDVCC offers a full range of services including crisis intervention through its 24-hour hotline and two emergency safe houses\, adult and youth counseling\, legal advocacy\, housing and financial sustainability\, and prevention education. All services are free and confidential.

SUMMARY:WHS Theater Presents "Big Fish" the Musical
DESCRIPTION:Wilton High School Theater presents Big Fish\, based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton. \nBig Fish tells the story of Edward Bloom\, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward’s incredible\, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him\, most of all\, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will\, about to have a child of his own\, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. Overflowing with heart and humor\, Big Fish is an extraordinary musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre — for an experience that’s richer\, funnier and bigger than life itself. \n

SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green Presents: Totally Obsessed with "Kelp!"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Go Green to watch Kelp!\, a 30-minute documentary and then hear from Dr. Leigh Shemitz about kelp in local waters. \nAbout Kelp! the documentary: Under the looming shadow of ecological breakdown\, a young filmmaker searches for a surprising super-solution that can help build a better future for humans and the planet. On an epic adventure aboard the good ship Gleaner through Britain’s rugged coastline\, they discover the power of kelp to regenerate our coasts\, empower communities and even replace plastic. \nAfter the film Shemitz\, president of SoundWaters\, will share what it is like to grow kelp locally\, just a few miles away. SoundWaters has farmed kelp in Long Island Sound for several years\, and Shemitz will explain what it takes to grow kelp\, including the timing and process and the challenges and successes. She will discuss the environmental benefits of kelp farming: how it can improve water quality and provide key nutrients for upland farms in our region. \nShemitz is the president of SoundWaters\, where her responsibilities include setting strategic direction\, developing programs\, creating partnerships\, overseeing operations and managing the SoundWaters staff and budget. Shemitz’s extensive background in environmental science provides enormous depth and breadth as she helps SoundWaters fulfill its mission to inspire future generations to create a better world through joyful learning on Long Island Sound. Shemitz currently serves on the board of directors of the Stamford Environmental Protection Board and the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens\, and is an emeritus board member at the New Haven Urban Resource Initiative. Shemitz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and literature from Harvard University; and a Master’s degree in forest science and a Ph.D. in environmental health\, both from Yale University. \nRegistration is suggested.

SUMMARY:A Better Chance of Wilton House Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join A Better Chance of Wilton on Friday\, June 6\, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for “Opening Our Hearts and Homes for ABC\,” a special Wilton house tour featuring five distinctive and stunning properties. This unique event offers a glimpse into some of Wilton’s most beautiful homes while supporting A Better Chance of Wilton and its mission. \nFor over 25 years\, A Better Chance of Wilton has provided educational opportunities to highly motivated high school students of color from across the United States. With 55 past scholars and five current students\, the program creates a supportive environment that fosters academic excellence and prepares students for college and beyond. Fully funded by private donations\, ABC Wilton continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of its Scholars. \nThis year’s event is held in loving memory of George Andrew Davala III\, a former board member and dedicated supporter of A Better Chance of Wilton. His commitment to the program helped shape the opportunities available to our scholars\, and his legacy continues to inspire our work. \nFor more information about sponsoring the House Tour or to purchase tickets\, visit the ABC Wilton website.
