SUMMARY:Jazz Post-1959: Diverging Paths
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the final program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959. The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nJazz historians and scholars often point to 1959 as a watershed year. Indeed\, the volume and breadth of the music created in that single year has perhaps few analogues in jazz — or any other genre\, for that matter. During this program\, Professor Harel will therefore consider the critical and artistic impact of the seminal albums of 1959. In doing so\, he also discusses the trajectories pursued by the artists who made the year so special. Subsequently\, three distinct and markedly divergent directions can be analyzed. This discussion will consider them through the important works of three celebrated musicians: John Coltrane\, Miles Davis\, and Dave Brubeck. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he received the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel additionally conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegister online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Public Open Studio at Weir Farm National Historical Park
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Weir Farm National Historical Park for an Open Studio with June Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Stephen Henderson on Saturday\, June 22\, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the AIR Studio\, next to the visitor parking lot at 735 Nod Hill Rd. Wilton. Meet the artist\, and view and discuss his artwork. It’s informal\, fun and artsy! \nHenderson works with mixed media in collages\, watercolors\, oils\, and acrylics. His work has grown out of a long-standing interest in archaeology\, art history\, and the study of cultures and religions from around the world. \n“I work in the plein air format\, but I add natural materials in the process. Sand\, dirt\, dried flowers\, homemade ink\, and other materials are included. As a result\, my work is abstract in nature but refers to the landscape in which I paint\,” Henderson said. \nRegistration is not required for this free event\, which will be held rain or shine. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of Weir Farm. \nWhile visiting the park\, enjoy “Take Part in Art” — borrow art supplies and create a watercolor. Step back in history and tour the wildly artistic Weir House and artists’ studios. Or take a short hike to the Weir Pond. \nTo learn more visit Weir Farm NHP’s AIR webpage. \n

SUMMARY:Free Youth Gardening Program at Trackside Teen Center
DESCRIPTION:Calling all teens with green thumbs!! The free Green Teens youth gardening program’s summer session begins Monday\, June 24\, from 9-11 a.m. at Trackside Teen Center. All rising middle and high school students are welcome. No gardening experience is necessary\, just an interest in nature and in helping others\, as the program is rooted (no pun intended!) in community service. The program will be held at Trackside every Monday in the summer through Aug. 19. Sign-ups are welcome at any time\, and registration is ongoing. \nAn initiative of Wilton Garden Club (WGC) and Trackside Teen Center\, Green Teens is led by experienced WGC gardeners. Its participants engage in hands-on activities like designing garden beds\, planting\, maintaining and harvesting\, as well as learning how to cook with the produce grown in their gardens. They also hear from occasional guest speakers and make creative garden art projects. From last year’s growing season\, Green Teens donated 232 pounds of fresh\, organic produce to the Wilton Food Pantry and 100 floral arrangements to the Wilton Senior Center and Wilton Commons\, all from the gardens they tended. \n“Our hope with Green Teens is to get more young people involved with creating and maintaining vegetable gardens\, to teach them about the importance of healthy foods\, and to give back to the community\,” WGC’s youth gardening committee co-chair Laurie Musilli said. “There’s something in this program for everyone.” \nTo register\, visit the Trackside Teen Center website or contact Musilli via email.
