SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: 97 Orchard Street: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenemant
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a great read\, something engaging and informative? \nCome to “Booked for Lunch\,” A History Reading Group at the Wilton Historical Society discussing 97 Orchard Street: An Edible history of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement by Jane Ziegelman \n“The story…about Old World habits clashing and ultimately melding with new American ones\, is familiar. But Ms. Ziegelman is a patient scholar and a graceful writer\, and she rummages in these families’ histories and larders to smart\, chewy effect.” –Dwight Garner\, The New York Times \nIn 97 Orchard Street\, Ziegelman explores the culinary life that was the heart and soul of New York’s Lower East Side around the turn of the twentieth century–a city within a city\, where Germans\, Irish\, Italians\, and Eastern European Jews attempted to forge a new life. Through the experiences of five families\, all of them residents of 97 Orchard Street (now the Tenement Museum)\, she takes readers on a vivid and unforgettable tour\, from impossibly cramped tenement apartments down dimly lit stairwells where children played and neighbors socialized\, beyond the front stoops where immigrant housewives found respite and company\, and out into the hubbub of the dirty\, teeming streets. Includes 40 recipes. \n“Highly entertaining and deceptively ambitious\, the book resurrects the juicy details of breakfast\, lunch and dinner (recipes included) consumed by poor and working-class New Yorkers a century and more ago. It could well have been subtitled “How the Other Half Ate”…Ziegelman adroitly works her way through the decades and her five cuisines. Along the way\, there are fascinating diversions.” —The New York Times Book Review \n“Social history is\, most elementally\, food history. Jane Ziegelman had the great idea to zero in on one Lower East Side tenement building\, and through it she has crafted a unique and aromatic narrative of New York’s immigrant culture: with bread in the oven\, steam rising from pots\, and the family gathering round.” — Russell Shorto\, author of The Island at the Center of the World \nParticipants bring a brown bag lunch\, the Society provides a beverage and dessert. There is no charge\, but please register by email or by calling 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:A Century of Style: 1860 – 1960 Exhibition Celebration\, Guest of Honor\, Jade Hobson\, former style editor at Vogue Magazine
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Sept. 8 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.\, head to the Wilton Historical Society for a glass of something bubbly\, and a look at a century’s worth of women’s special occasion fashions. Inspired by the upcoming New York Fashion Week (Sept. 5-12)\, the event will toast the fashion exhibition “A Century of Style:  1860-1960.” Guest of Honor is Wilton’s Jade Hobson\, former style editor of Vogue Magazine\, who may be persuaded to share a story or two of her own experiences at Fashion Week. The exhibition runs through Oct. 6. All are invited. No charge. \nAbout the exhibition:\nThe Wilton Historical Society is presenting a fashion exhibition\, “A Century of Style: 1860-1960\,” open through Oct. 6. Decade by decade\, the exhibition traces evolving styles in women’s special occasion garb. From an all-white cotton lace flounced dress suitable for a tea party in a garden to a Jackie Kennedy-esque black A-line with satin bow\, an Edwardian bridesmaid dress with train to a sophisticated wasp-waisted 1940s dress with matching custom-made suede shoes\, style trends are captured in these carefully saved clothes which had special significance to their owners. Also on display are an acid-green silk high-necked gown with black netting and jet beads from the late 1880s which came from the Elizabeth Ambler Estate\, and was possibly worn by Betty Ambler’s grandmother. Lady Mary Crawley of Downton Abbey would have looked stunning in the stunning black chiffon flapper dress accented with rhinestones for a night on the town. A display of purses and women’s shoes rounds out the show. \nThe exhibition was developed by the Wilton Historical Society\, Pamela Hovland\, and Megan Smith-Harris.

SUMMARY:Historic Preservation 101 Talk by Greg Farmer\, Circuit Rider CT Trust for Historic Preservation
DESCRIPTION:National register\, state register\, local historic district\, historic resource inventories\, local ordinances\, tax credits\, design review–what are the basics of historic preservation? With so much discussion about Wilton’s historic architecture and landscapes\, here is an ideal way to learn about historic preservation. \nGreg Farmer\, a circuit rider with the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation will present “Historic Preservation 101” on Thursday\, Sept. 13 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.. The Connecticut Circuit Riders are field officers trained to bring preservation resources to local groups. A light lunch is included. \nThis is the first in a series of three programs focused on historic preservation which will be presented by the Wilton Historical Society this fall. The second program\, on Saturday\, Sept. 29\, 3-4:30 p.m.\, will present the findings of architectural historians Stacey Vairo and Lucas Karmazinas as they studied Wilton’s historic homes\, mostly from 1920-1940\, followed by a reception. The final program is “How I Researched My Historic Wilton Home” by Kelly Morron\, to be offered on Thursday\, Oct. 11\, 12:30-1:30 p.m.\, with light lunch. \nThe Connecticut Circuit Riders program is generously funded by the State Historic Preservation Office\, DECD\, through the Community Investment Act. Circuit Riders work with many statewide and national preservation organizations to provide the widest range of tools to individuals and communities across Connecticut through investigative visits\, consultations and meetings. \nWilton Historical Society members are free; non-members cost $10 per person. Please register for Historic Preservation 101 via email or by calling 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:Wilton's Big Block Party Weekend
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to strengthen neighborhood connections and create opportunity for face-to-face conversation\, Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Task Force is encouraging participation in Wilton’s Big Block Party Weekend. The theme is “Building community one block at a time.” The next town-wide weekend is September 15-16\, with each road or neighborhood choosing its own day and time. There are no hard and fast rules for the events\, but people are encouraged to think simple and keep it “old-fashioned.” \nWe have a two-pronged goal of creating opportunities for Wilton residents to connect in person instead of on social media\, as well as helping children to make friends in their neighborhood in order to foster more neighborhood free play. \nTop Reasons to have a Block Party \n1. Meet and get to know your neighbors\n2. Increase a sense of belonging in the community\n3. Get outside\, make friends and have fun–no excuses are needed to celebrate\n4. Find neighborhood playmates for your children\n5. Opportunity for face-to-face connection and conversation\n6. Meet some of the long standing neighbors and learn about your community history\n7. Decrease stress of snow days\, storms and emergency situations\n8. Create a neighborhood contact list

SUMMARY:Cat’s Cradle and other String Games Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:According to Historical Folk Toys\, “String games such as Cat’s Cradle have been played around the world for thousands (if not millions) of years. It does not appear that this game has a particular origin; rather\, it was developed independently by many cultures around the same time . . . . It seems that string figures were familiar to most native inhabitants of East Asia\, Australia\, Africa\, the Arctic\, the Americas\, and the Pacific Islands. Some string games might even be from the Stone Age! Since actual “string” was not available in most of these regions\, people used native sources like sinew or leather\, twine made from bark\, Hibiscus tree fiber\, or even braided human hair. Most string games are played with one or two pairs of hands\, but some people have been known to use their toes\, knees\, elbows\, and mouth. They can create some fabulous string patterns!” \nFor this Wilton Historical Society children’s workshop\, museum educator Lola Chen will discuss string games\, and teach the kids how to play four classic string games:  Cup and Saucer\, The Witch’s Broom\, Cat’s Cradle\, and Jacob’s Ladder. \nThe children will help make their own snack\, cookies decorated with cinnamon sugar in lattice patterns. \nThe workshop is suggested for children ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child\, with a maximum of $25 per family; non-members are $15 per child\, with a maximum of $35 per family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nIf you become a serious string game enthusiast or are just a little more curious\, check out the International String Figure Association (ISFA)\, which was founded in 1978 by Hiroshi Noguchi\, a Japanese mathematician\, and Philip Noble\, an Anglican missionary\, stationed in Paupa\, New Guinea.

SUMMARY:GOT PHOTOS? Photo Organizing Made Easy With Susan Morrow
DESCRIPTION:Who among us does not have a shoe box (or 5) of loose family photos? Multiple trays of slides? Phone full of photos? Inherited black and white photos in all kinds of formats from formal portraits to “brownie” snapshots? \nWouldn’t it be great if they could all get organized so you can find what you are looking for\, and easily share them? \nOn Saturday\, Sept. 15 from 2-3:30 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will help you learn how to assess that photo mess and make a plan to back-up\, clean-up and share valued family photos with Susan Morrow\, who will be presenting “Got Photos? Photo Organizing Made Easy.” With your photo collection under control\, it is possible to create books of family history and slideshows for special celebrations. \nMorrow will discuss how to preserve print and digital photographs to prevent the unforeseen loss of these valued family treasures\, how to get organized and backed up for sharing photos with family members\, sharing organizing strategies\, digitizing best practices\, backup methods\, and resources. She is a treasure trove of information about how to go about reducing your print and digital photos to usable\, viewable quantities\, and on digitizing outdated media including film\, VHS\, videos\, slides\, audio and scanning of photographs. \nMorrow\, owner of SwickPix\, LLC has 31 years of professional photography and editing expertise\, and is certified by the Association of Professional Photo Organizers (APPO). \nThe is no cost to attend for Wilton Historical Society members\, non-Members are $10 per person. SUMMARY:Circle of Care 2018 Gala: Duende
DESCRIPTION:Duende:  Passion.Courage.Inspiration \nJoin us for a very special evening supporting children in treatment for cancer in our community. \nOur Gala theme\, Duende\, comes from a Spanish term that defies literal translation. The term is traditionally used in flamenco music or other art forms to refer to the mystical or powerful force within. Duende “is a power and not a behavior . . . a struggle and not a concept.” The brave children we serve all have a certain duende and so do those who help them on their journey. \nWe invite you to celebrate their boundless spirit on this special night. \nOur “Duende” Gala will be a festive evening of dinner\, live music and entertainment to celebrate these families and the friends\, volunteers and generous donors who support our Circle of Care families. \nTickets start at $275. Sponsorships\, silent and live auction donations are still being accepted.

SUMMARY:5K Run and Walk to Benefit Education in India
DESCRIPTION:Education is a central Wilton topic–most usually with a very local focus. But now\, one organization with ties to more remote areas in Asia is devoting some of that focus to education overseas. \nA local\, CT chapter of an organization called Ekal Vidyalaya\, made up of families with ties to India\, is organizing a fundraising effort to continue their support of growing education in rural and tribal Indian communities. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement focused on creating and growing one-teacher schools in remote Indian villages to bring education to all children in the country. Since starting in 1986\, Ekal has become the largest grassroots level non-governmental education and development movement operating in rural India. \nEkal Vidyalaya is organizing 5K Run and Walk on Sunday\, Sept. 16 in Merwin Meadows\, starting at 9 a.m.\, to raise funds to continue their work. Registration to take part in the 5K costs $20 per adult\, $10 per child. \nThe CT chapter of Ekal was started in 2010. That year the group raised funds for 100 schools and has continued to grow 30% every year\, contributing a total of 500+ schools by 2018. There are approximately 50 families in Fairfield County who have been involved in the local effort. 500 schools are part of the 75\,000 schools created by the global effort\, impacting more than 2 million students. \nAccording to the Ekal website\, the movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India\, following a philosophy of rural development based on criteria of equality and inclusiveness across all sections of society. \nEkal says each school is managed and run for just $365 a year. The money funds teachers more than physical infrastructure or buildings. It hires and trains teachers\, and aims to utilize physical space free of cost. The website says that Ekal’s administrative costs are less than 10% of contributions and the majority of the organization’s workforce is volunteer. \nFor more information\, contact organizers via email or visit the chapter’s Facebook page.
