SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society's Ornaments and Tree Traditions Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Today\, evergreen trees decked out in a colorful array of ornaments\, garlands\, shiny glass balls\, all topped by a star\, are a universal sign of the Christmas holiday\, along with cards\, wrapped gifts\, wreaths\, and Santa. According to Emma Powers of Colonial Williamsburg\, “Most of the ways Americans celebrate the midwinter holiday came about in the 19th century… Decorations consisted of whatever natural materials looked attractive at the bleakest time of year–evergreens\, berries\, forced blossoms–and the necessary candles and fires… As for the tree\, it is German in origin. ‘Tannenbaum’ gained acceptance in England and the United States only very slowly. The first written reference to a Christmas tree dates from the 17th century when a candle-lighted tree astonished residents of Strasbourg. I have found nothing recorded in the 18th century about holiday trees in Europe or North America.” \nMuseum educator Laurie Walker will discuss tree traditions and the history of ornaments. A penny rug inspired felt ornament is the workshop project. Snack of pretzels dipped in white chocolate. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Wilton Historical Society members cost is $10/child\, maximum $25/family; non-members cost is $15/child\, maximum $35/family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nAccording to Little House Home Arts\, “Originally penny rugs were made from scraps of dark wool fabric or felt from used clothes and hats and were used as mats to clear mud and dirt off shoes. They were named penny rugs as they were made of three different sized circular medallions layered on top of each other. The top medallion was the size of a penny\, though in the 1800’s pennies were larger than they are now. Sometimes pennies were actually sewn into them to help weight them down and make them lay flat… Eventually penny rugs evolved into a traditional and colorful folk art. Women used their remnants and scraps of wool from making clothes\, or “turned” wool from used clothes to make their penny rugs. They would use bits of material too small to be used for strips for hooked rugs. Designs evolved from the simple circular medallions into colorful works of art with primitive appliquéd patterns of various animals\, stars\, hearts\, flowers and other shapes. Personal and elaborate stories were communicated through them using designs that included people\, their homes\, various scenes and landscapes\, thus transforming their scraps into wonderful works of art and story with elaborate stitching.”

SUMMARY:CT Friends of the Performing Arts Presents Tom Freund
DESCRIPTION:“Tom Freund is indeed one of the great singer- songwriters. He constructs a unique world\, defines it\, and then burns it to the ground. Truly unique and absolutely brilliant.” –All Music Guide \n“It’s the ease with which he delivers conversational lyrics and honeyed melodies\, a natural magic that is the soul of Tom Freund’s music. Though he’s widely-traveled in a variety of genres–from heartfelt folk to buoyant pop to boho jazz to straightforward rock ’n’ roll\, and beyond–Freund is\, simply put\, a singer-songwriter with a defined and captivating presence. Tom Freund\, a New York native whose resume also includes playing bass for the Silos as well as working with Jackson Browne\, Elvis Costello and others\, co-produced the 11-song East Of Lincoln with Sejo Navajas (Vintage Trouble\, Gabrielle Wortman). Longtime buddy Ben Harper contributing to a pair of tracks and Freund is joined by Foo Fighters’ Rami Jaffe and a batch of session luminaries.” \nHe has a few shows on the books now and is coming to Wilton as a special guest of the CT Friends of the Performing Arts. \nTickets are $50 and can be purchased at the door or by messaging CTFOPA on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Welcome the holiday season with Wilton Dance Studio's "The Nutcracker"
DESCRIPTION:What makes the holiday season special? Cherished traditions\, music and festive decorations set the stage and Wilton Dance Studio’s 21st annual production of The Nutcracker ballet has them all. This year’s performance is back to delight all ages on Sunday\, Dec. 9 and features more than 50 dancers from Wilton. New and extra special this year are a meet-and-greet with dancers and a toy drive for Person-to-Person to share the joy of the season with those in need. \nThe full-scale production with lavish sets and costumes includes more than 80 students and adults from seven area towns. The ballet will be performed on Sunday\, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Wilton High School’s Clune Center for the Performing Arts. \n“Each year\, parents tell me their young children who come to the show fall in love with our special ballet and want to start dancing\,” said Creative Director and Owner of the Wilton Dance Studio Brenda Froehlich. “Many of our older dancers shared this happy experience when they were younger and carry that magic with them on the stage each year. This year\, to inspire those young dancers\, we’re adding a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity immediately following our 1:00 pm show. We welcome audience members to come say hello to their favorite dancers and see our beautiful costumes up close.” \nA fun part of the Nutcracker ballet story involves the handing out of gifts to children at a festive party. Unfortunately\, many families in our area can’t afford that luxury\, so the Wilton Dance Studio was inspired to host a toy drive at both performances this year. Audience members are encouraged to drop off a new\, unwrapped toy to be shared with a child in need. All toys will go to the local organization Person-to-Person. Kim Collibee of Person-to-Person said\, “We are expecting to serve more children than ever this year\, so the more toys we can get the better.” \nWilton Dance Studio’s Nutcracker is designed to suit to audiences of all ages while also challenging its dance students\, who change roles and learn more complex choreography each year. The performance length is manageable for young children and does not require an intermission. The ballet follows the traditional story of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King\, with music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Professional sets and elegant costumes complete the high-quality production. \nTo buy tickets\, call 203.544.9007 and leave a message or order at www.wiltondance.com\, click on “Nutcracker Performances” download & print the ticket order form. Tickets are also available at the door on the day of the show. \nPhoto Credit: Donner Photographic \n
