SUMMARY:Ambler Farm's Online Transplant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2019 transplant growing season. Thank you for supporting Ambler Farm and for growing your own food at home. We want your gardens to be a success and so we are excited to offer you a variety of vegetables that we hope you will enjoy growing. We provide them a good start in our greenhouse and let you do the rest. \nEvery year we start selling cold-tolerant transplants in mid-April and warm weather transplants in mid-May. We will offer a selection of transplants for sale on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon. As we do every year\, we are again offering our “Grown Only to Order” program to offer you a wider choice for your home gardens. We’re offering several additional varieties of 25 vegetable types. We do this because we would love for you to experiment where we cannot. Therefore we have many varieties that we will grow only if you order them in advance. \nFor example\, we plan to grow 19 varieties of tomatoes at the farm this summer\, but there will be 60 varieties from which you can choose for your own garden. We are offering additional varieties of eggplants\, flowers\, herbs\, onions\, scallions\, salad and cooking greens\, peppers\, summer squash and winter squash. We are also offering crops such as arugula\, beets\, radishes and spinach that normally get seeded directly but can be transplanted for an early start. \nYou will see a date on each transplant page that says the last day to order any of the transplants online. The reason for this is to allow Farmer Jonathan to have enough time to grow the plants in the greenhouse. Don’t fret if you miss ordering online as we will have transplants available at the farm. What we will not have are the items that say Note: This Item Grown to Order Only. Please note that we cannot ship plants. Please see deadline by transplant below: \nBroccoli/Brussels Sprouts/Cabbage/Cauliflower – March 18 \nCelery/Celeriac/Fennel – March 10 \nCooking Greens – March 24 \nCorn/Okra – March 31 \nCucumbers – April 21 \nEggplant – March 24 \nFlowers – March 31 (There are some flowers that will end earlier) \nHerbs- March 17 \nLeeks/Onions/Scallions/Shallots – February 24 \nCantaloupe/Muskmelons/Watermelons – April 21 \nBeans/Peas – March 24 \nPeppers – March 10 \nRoot Vegetables – April 21 \nSalad Greens – March 31 \nSummer Squash – April 14 \nTomatillos/Tomatoes (Cherry\, Pear\, Paste\, Saladette) – March 24 \nTomatoes (Slicing) – March 24 \nWinter Squash – April 14 \nOur transplants are 100% organically grown in our greenhouse from seed in a compost-based potting soil and they are lovingly tended by our Director of Agriculture\, Jonathan Kirschner. Farmer Jonathan says to please note that we strive to give you plants that will do well when you are ready to put them in your garden. This means that size can be deceiving. Often a bigger plant will be root bound and take longer to adjust to transplanting than a smaller one. Don’t get overexcited by very large bushy plants\, they may not be the best choice for you. Transplants grown this way suffer less transplant shock and show better resistance to adverse conditions such as disease and pest pressure. Transplants include those that are suited for a colder Northern climate (when planted). \nHead to the Ambler Farm website to order yours today!

SUMMARY:Bullets\, Bonds\, and Butter: Wilton Responds to War 1776-2006
DESCRIPTION:Opening on March 15\, Bullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\, 1776-2006\, the new exhibition at the Wilton Historical Society\, commemorates the contributions of both the soldiers and the townsfolk who answered the call of war. While troops fought on the front lines\, Wilton residents of all ages back at home were engaged in supporting the war effort in ways both large and small. Rationing\, writing letters to the troops\, knitting socks and making bandages\, buying war bonds\, manufacturing diverse supplies\, spotting airplanes from observation towers\, collecting scrap\, sending soccer balls to underprivileged children around the world\, and in some cases\, protesting against war were all part of the response. \nBullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\, 1776-2006 includes material from the Revolutionary War\, the War of 1812\, the Civil War\, World War I\, World War II\, the Korean War\, the Viet Nam War\, and the war in Iraq. To mark the anniversary of the birth of the American Legion in March of 1919\, the Wilton Historical Society worked with Adjutant Tom Moore of Wilton’s James B. Whipple Post 86 to develop a special section on the history of the organization\, which includes some of their artifacts. \nThe opening day of the exhibition\, Friday\, March 15 from 2-3 p.m.\, will be celebrated with a “birthday” cake to honor Wilton’s Post 86 and the American Legion. All are invited!

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Egg (Pysanky) Decorating Workshop for Adults and Kids
DESCRIPTION:Learn the colorful and venerable craft of decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style\, known as pysanky (their name is derived from the Ukrainian verb meaning to write). Expert egg decorator Susan Clark will lead the Wilton Historical Society workshop for adults and children. This ancient craft uses symbols and motifs to create a jewel-like egg. Intricate designs can be created with geometric forms\, or with more naturalistic\, flowing patterns. Participants will be using a kistka\, a pointed implement a bit like a pen\, filled with beeswax and heated\, to draw designs on the eggs between bathing them in colored dye. Decorate eggs in a traditional design\, or create your own. \nThe workshop is for adults and children ages 9 and up. Children ages 6-8 must be accompanied by adult. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $20; for non-members is $25. Registration is required by email or calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \n“According to Ukrainian folklore\, the fate of the world depends on pysanky\, intricately decorated dyed Easter eggs. As long as people make pysanky\, it is said\, a monster personifying evil will remain chained to its cliff and the world will be safe.” – The New York Times\,  April 5\, 1984

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 4 10 a.m.-noon\, Wilton Library \nLicensed clinical psychologist Mary Murphy PhD\, LACD and psychotherapist Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen\, CADC will explain the complex topics of executive function and working memory–crucial aspects of a child’s ability to succeed in school and with everyday tasks. They will emphasize how you can assist your child in developing and implementing helpful strategies. \nChildren and teens with Executive Function deficits have difficulties managing time constructively; setting goals appropriately; controlling emotional and behavioral impulses; prioritizing; sustaining attention; planning and organizing; starting tasks and following through; self-regulating; and making mature judgments regarding right & wrong and cause & effect. \nIn readily understandable terms\, Dr. Mary Murphy and Elizabeth Jorgensen will explain the complex topics of executive function and working memory – crucial aspects of a child’s ability to be successful in school and with everyday tasks – with an emphasis on how parents can assist them in developing and implementing helpful strategies. \nLicensed clinical psychologist Mary Murphy specializes in counseling\, executive function and academic coaching\, psychological testing\, psychotherapy\, and biofeedback. Her counseling practice focuses on helping children and adolescents affected by mood disorders\, neurological conditions\, and substance use. Dr. Murphy’s unique training and clinical experience allows her to look at patients through multiple relevant lenses to evaluate the impact that emotional symptoms\, learning/cognitive issues\, medical conditions and/or substance use may have on their ability to reach their true potential in school. Dr. Murphy completed advanced fellowship training at the Yale School of Medicine. She currently is a professor at Westconn. \nPsychotherapist Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen has over two decades of experience specializing in adolescent psychotherapy and substance abuse counseling. The recipient of a 1994 Congressional Award for her work\, Ms. Jorgensen is a recognized expert in engaging resistant teens and motivating them to change\, a consultant to independent schools and agencies\, and a popular speaker on parenting pre-teens and teenagers. \nRegistration information will be available soon–visit the Wilton Library website. \nQuestions/Comments: info@spednetwilton.org

SUMMARY:Statues\, Boulders\, and Monoliths: The World War One Memorials of Connecticut Illustrated Talk by Richard Donohue
DESCRIPTION:As the First World War ended\, American communities such as Wilton hurried to memorialize the great efforts of their sons and daughters. Changes in cultural and civic ideals since the American Civil War led to extensive public discourse about what memorials should and should not be. Government leaders\, artists\, historians\, and the monument industry itself promoted ideas from simple tablets to monoliths rivaling those of Egypt and Rome. Memorials throughout Connecticut exemplify this entire range of monumental styles. \nHistorian Richard Donohue will be presenting an illustrated talk on the World War I Monuments of Connecticut at the Wilton Historical Society. He will share stories of their design\, placement\, and the people memorialized on them. Special attention will be given to the many in Wilton. This illustrated program lasts for approximately one hour\, with questions\, and includes images of memorials throughout the 169 towns of Connecticut\, accompanied by musical recordings of the period. A light lunch is included. \nThis program is presented as part of the exhibition\, “Bullets\, Bonds and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\,” which will be on display in the Burt Barn Gallery from March 15-May 11\, 2019. \nDonohue is the town historian of his hometown of Cromwell\, CT. His original research has formed the basis of museum exhibits\, travelling lectures\, and living history programs on topics ranging from 18th-century slavery to Civil War-era subscription balls to early 20th-century marine engines. As president and program director of the Cromwell Historical Society for nearly 15 years and a teacher in both public and private schools for 25 years\, he strives to enhance his town’s interest and participation in local and national history. In addition to his work with history\, Donohue is a tenor soloist specializing in Middle English carols\, Bach arias\, and German Lieder and is the director of the 1876 Singing Society at Mystic Seaport. \nWilton Historical Society members attend for free; the cost for non-members is $10 per person. Please register for World War I Memorials of Connecticut via email or by calling 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:Ambler Farm’s Beekeeping Program
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard the buzz? Ambler Farm is starting a Beekeeping Program! \nHoney bees are fascinating creatures that play an incredibly important role in our food chain through pollination. This program is designed for adults with a casual interest as well as beginning beekeepers. Participants will follow our Ambler Farm honey bees throughout the year\, beginning in April with hiving a new package of bees. We will then monitor our bees throughout the spring\, summer and fall. It is expected that there will be eight opportunities for registrants to visit our bees and monitor their progress as the hive grows. If you have your own hive\, this is a great way to learn about your bees and compare them to trends we are seeing in the Ambler hives. \nWe plan to meet on Sundays from 1-2 p.m.\, four times in the spring\, twice in the summer and twice in the fall. Meeting dates will be determined by the arrival of our bees and their progress. \nAmbler Farm program director Kevin Meehan has been a beekeeper for over 10 years and brings a wealth of information and experiences to share with participants. Registration is limited. Please email Meehan with questions and if you are starting your own hive in conjunction with this program. \nThe cost to participate is $150 for non-members\, $130 for members.

SUMMARY:"Guys and Dolls" at The Wilton Playshop
DESCRIPTION:Based on the stories and characters by Damon Runyon\, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows\, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile\, his girlfriend and nightclub performer\, Adelaide\, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler\, Sky Masterson\, for the dough\, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary\, Sarah Brown\, as a result. \nGuys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana\, Cuba\, and even into the sewers of New York City\, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong. The show features some of the most cherished show tunes in American musical theatre\, including\, “Fugue for Tinhorns\,” “Luck Be a Lady\,” and “Sit Down\, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” \nPerformances: \nApril 26\, 27\, May 2\, 3\, 4\, 9\, 10\, and 11 at 8 p.m.\nApril 28 and May 5 at 2 p.m. \nTickets are $35/adults\, $30/senior and students. \nVisit  the Wilton Playshop website  for more information and tickets.
