SUMMARY:ArtScapades: The Harlem Art Explosion: From Innovation to Mainstream
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a fascinating and timely ArtScapades lecture\, “The Harlem Art Explosion: From Innovation to Mainstream\,” on Monday\, Jan. 29\, at 7 p.m. in the Brubeck Room. \nBlack History Month 2024\, which is celebrated in February\, is devoted this year to African Americans and the Arts. During the Harlem Renaissance of the early 20th Century\, the Harlem neighborhood in New York City became a Black cultural mecca. A social and artistic explosion resulted. It was a literary\, artistic\, and intellectual movement that kindled a new Black cultural identity\, and encouraged a new appreciation of folk roots and culture. \nIn “The Harlem Art Explosion\,” ArtScapades looks at three artists who were working in Harlem at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. William H. Johnson\, Romaire Bearden and Jacob Lawrence focused their art on African American culture and daily life in Harlem. \nRobin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman of ArtScapades\, began teaching art appreciation in 1998. They have presented at libraries\, art centers\, and museums in Connecticut\, New York\, New Jersey\, Massachusetts\, and Florida. \nRegistration in advance is suggested. by registering online or by calling 203.762.6334. Email for more information.

SUMMARY:Hockney/Origins: Early Works from the Roy B. and Edith J. Simpson Collection\, The Bruce Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library in learning about some of the early works of David Hockney. The expanded galleries of the Bruce Museum’s William L. Richter Art Wing have allowed Dr. Margarita Karasoulas\, the Bruce’s Curator of Art\, the space to explore the life and career of this prolific and innovative pop artist. Hockney/Origins: Early Works from the Roy B. and Edith J. Simpson Collection contains works created by Hockney from the 1960s to the 1980s\, pivotal years in his career. These pieces illustrate Hockney’s ability and fluidity in a myriad of mediums and his wit\, humor\, and tenderness as a friend and artist. \nCorinne Flax is a museum educator\, arts enthusiast\, and community educator. She studied Art History at Drew University\, receiving her B.A. in 2003 and her M.A. from Bank Street in Museum Education in 2008. Flax joined the Bruce Museum in 2015 as Manager of School and Community Partnership\, where she develops curriculum and community partnerships while focusing on creating intersections between art and science. \nRegistration is suggested. SUMMARY:“Art Asks” Exhibition and Opening Reception at Wilton Library
DESCRIPTION:Artists often ask to exhibit their works at Wilton Library\, and although there is a Summer Show featuring local contributors\, some artists were unable to participate or do not live within Wilton’s boundaries. This February show features several artists who have made such inquiries. Thus\, the topic of questions regarding art seemed like a natural theme for the show. \nEach artist provided the library with questions about their art: what they hope viewers will contemplate when considering the work\, what they typically ask themself when creating\, or what their own questions are as a viewer. Those thoughts will be shared as part of the exhibit\, and the community is invited to think about their queries when viewing the works. \nThese pieces represent a wide variety of styles\, media\, and subject matter. The artists are: Grace Barbieri (Norwalk)\, Cindy Bernier (Norwalk)\, Lacey Bernier (Wilton)\, Shivani De Bree (Wilton)\, Gini Fischer (Wilton)\, and Christian Mouser. \nAn Opening Reception on Friday\, Feb. 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through March 14. A majority of the works are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

SUMMARY:"Disruptive Narratives" Art Exhibition at Wilton Library

Their use of pop culture symbols and clever commentary challenge societal norms\, offering a fresh\, critical perspective on the ordinary. \nThrough satirical reinterpretations and subversive twists on familiar imagery\, the artists compel viewers to question the narratives shaping our world. To encourage deeper exploration and discussion\, each artist has selected a book that relates to their work and the themes addressed in the exhibit. These recommendations provide additional context and insights into the provocative topics explored by the artists. \nThe artists from the group will exhibit their works in an array of styles\, media choices\, and subject matter. The artists are: 5iveFingaz (Norwalk)\, Tara Blackwell (Stamford)\, Lauren Clayton (Stamford)\, Dooley-O (New Haven)\, Alejandra Gonzalez Zertuche (Norwalk)\, Thalia Hernandez (Bridgeport)\, Jahmane (Norwalk)\, Lily Morgan (Stamford)\, and Sain’t Phifer (Norwalk). \nIn addition\, “Disruptive Narratives: Teen Edition” celebrates the transformative power of youth creativity. It offers a platform for the bold and fearless expressions of a new generation of artists. Join in embracing the rebellious spirit of these emerging voices as they redefine the boundaries of contemporary discourse and offer a fresh\, critical lens on the ordinary. Each teen artist has also contributed to a curated selection of books that resonate with their work and provide deeper insight into the themes of the exhibit. \nThe emerging teen artists are: Clara Eliot (Weston)\, Freya Goldenberg (New Canaan)\, Olive Goldenberg (New Canaan)\, and Lila Malone (Stamford). \nOpening reception on Friday\, June 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public.
