SUMMARY:Garden Dialogues 2019: Wilton\, CT
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 the Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Garden Dialogues program\, which provides exclusive access to exceptional landscapes\, will go coast to coast\, from elegant estates in Greenwich\, Connecticut\, and waterfront retreats in Maine\, to one of the oldest zinfandel vineyards in California and other sites in Florida\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, New York\, Virginia\, Washington State\, Washington\, D.C.\, and elsewhere. These projects have been designed by some of today’s most talented and visionary landscape architects. \nCider Ridge Farm is located on the outskirts of Wilton. The farm encompasses 16 acres of preserved meadows and a historic working orchard. An 18th-century agricultural lane with fieldstone walls runs along the ridgeline of the property\, creating a purposeful divide between the site for a new homestead and the existing agrarian landscape. Two phases of work defined this project. The first\, a new home for a young and growing family on the south side of the property; the second\, the comprehensive restoration of the original 19th-century homestead on the northeast corner of the site. \nThe landscape architecture firm\, STIMSON\, worked closely with the owners to create a multi-generational homestead that expressed the contemporary needs of the modern family\, while preserving the integrity of the historic farm. Principals Stephen Stimson\, FASLA and Lauren Stimson\, ASLA will lead the design discussion and share how the juxtaposition of old and new\, rustic and modern\, became a guiding language for the materials\, planting palette and overall landscape expression of the project. \nOld Farm\nThe historic farmhouse dates back to the mid 1700s\, with connections to the Revolutionary War and stories of British troops staying overnight. Over the last century\, the farm raised horses and historically\, race horses. The careful siting of the birthing stalls on the New York side of the property meant the horses could be part of the New York racing circuit. The historic farm lane remains the landmark that organizes the site\, dividing the farm between Connecticut and New York. The stonewalls that define the lane were carefully restored and new openings were created at key moments to provide views and connections between the two homes. A new court\, a reclaimed bluestone terrace and a working garden of raised beds were integrated into the historic home. A series of walls around the old farmhouse were rebuilt using site fieldstone\, and define the original formal tea lawn. \n \nNew Farm\nThe new farm landscape was conceived as a series of outdoor rooms adjacent to the house\, with a working kitchen garden and perennial garden stepping up to the historic lane. The garden is a collection that reinterpret the site’s meadows\, selected for seasonal display of color and texture. Above the gardens\, a new pool\, pavilion and play garden converge at the historic lane\, carefully inserted between fragments of the historic farm walls. The use of rusted steel\, granite and reclaimed stone respond to the site’s heritage\, yet also express the Owners’ affinity for modern art and architecture. These materials also carry forward the property’s legacy\, in the hands of the farmer\, they shaped this landscape for well over a century. \n \nManagement\nMaintaining a legacy property like Cider Ridge Farm requires a great deal of planning\, effort and expertise. Burt Demarche\, President of The LaurelRock Company who constructed the project with STIMSON\, will join the dialogue to discuss landscape strategies\, curation and long-term management at the Farm. \nAttendees will enjoy a take-home harvest basket from Cider Ridge Farm’s bountiful kitchen garden. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:“Art Asks” Exhibition and Opening Reception at Wilton Library
DESCRIPTION:Artists often ask to exhibit their works at Wilton Library\, and although there is a Summer Show featuring local contributors\, some artists were unable to participate or do not live within Wilton’s boundaries. This February show features several artists who have made such inquiries. Thus\, the topic of questions regarding art seemed like a natural theme for the show. \nEach artist provided the library with questions about their art: what they hope viewers will contemplate when considering the work\, what they typically ask themself when creating\, or what their own questions are as a viewer. Those thoughts will be shared as part of the exhibit\, and the community is invited to think about their queries when viewing the works. \nThese pieces represent a wide variety of styles\, media\, and subject matter. The artists are: Grace Barbieri (Norwalk)\, Cindy Bernier (Norwalk)\, Lacey Bernier (Wilton)\, Shivani De Bree (Wilton)\, Gini Fischer (Wilton)\, and Christian Mouser. \nAn Opening Reception on Friday\, Feb. 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through March 14. A majority of the works are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

SUMMARY:Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life — A Live Theatrical Performance by Ginger Grace
DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month\, 30 days of celebrating the joy\, expressiveness\, and pure delight of poetry. What better way to celebrate poetry than by honoring the legendary American poet Emily Dickinson? Join Wilton Library for this interactive production of “Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life\,” created and performed by Ginger Grace. \nDickinson takes viewers on a delirious romp through her life and times. Wit\, wonder and wisdom are the order of the day. The audience finds itself in the midst of life changing events and relationships as Dickinson defies the conventions of her time – and creates poetry for the ages. On occasion\, she steps out of the play\, calls out to the audience for words and ideas\, weaves those into the fabric of the piece – and now\, the possibilities with words are limitless! \n“Animated – informal and personal – you made me love Emily Dickinson.” \nGrace’s acting credits include the national tour of The Presidents (opposite Rich Little). Off-Broadway: The Glass Menagerie; Miss Julie; Faust; and Electra. Regional: Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey; The First Ladies Coalition (written and performed by Grace); The Belle of Amherst; and Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life (written and performed by Grace); Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf; and Doubt. Film: Wedding March by Deborah Savadge; Chris Shomojima’s 6-Minute Mom; and The Trouble with Tuesdays by Martine Sainvil. \nGrace has worked with the CASA Program\, helping inner-city school children create their own shows\, and she thrives on bringing out the voices of children in the theater. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

These recommendations provide additional context and insights into the provocative topics explored by the artists. \nThe artists from the group will exhibit their works in an array of styles\, media choices\, and subject matter. The artists are: 5iveFingaz (Norwalk)\, Tara Blackwell (Stamford)\, Lauren Clayton (Stamford)\, Dooley-O (New Haven)\, Alejandra Gonzalez Zertuche (Norwalk)\, Thalia Hernandez (Bridgeport)\, Jahmane (Norwalk)\, Lily Morgan (Stamford)\, and Sain’t Phifer (Norwalk). \nIn addition\, “Disruptive Narratives: Teen Edition” celebrates the transformative power of youth creativity. It offers a platform for the bold and fearless expressions of a new generation of artists. Join in embracing the rebellious spirit of these emerging voices as they redefine the boundaries of contemporary discourse and offer a fresh\, critical lens on the ordinary.
