SUMMARY:SPED*NET: Is She on the Spectrum? Identifying and Helping Girls with “Asperger’s” and Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD)
DESCRIPTION:Know any bright girls who are inflexible\, argumentative\, and emotionally over-reactive or who shut down at times? Who have been called oppositional\, avoidant or attention-seeking? Who can’t quite fit in with peers? They may have “Asperger’s\,” have NLD\, or be on the autism spectrum. \nA proper diagnosis allows us to better understand and help these girls\, rather than blame them. Instead of constantly criticizing them\, we can listen with an awareness of spectrum issues\, understand and anticipate their needs\, and provide the accommodations and environment that will help them better navigate the mainstream world. If the girls feel more accepted for who they are\, they can have higher self-esteem and learn to advocate for themselves more successfully. \nOn Wednesday\, Jan. 12\, 10-11 a.m. via Zoom\, licensed psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, will discuss why girls are so often misinterpreted and underdiagnosed and why an accurate diagnosis is important for the girls themselves\, educators\, clinicians\, and especially parents. \nPlease register by using the Website link.

SUMMARY:Driving for Neurodiverse Learners [Webinar]
DESCRIPTION:A driving license means so much more than simply being able to drive. It represents freedom\, independence and is a sign of adulthood. For the average person\, learning to drive can be both an intimidating and a liberating experience. For an autistic person or those with ADHD\, executive functioning challenges\, anxiety or other learning disabilities\, driving may seem out of reach. \nAndrew Arboe\, a self-advocate with ASD and the founder of Driving with Autism\, will share his experience of going from not wanting to drive at all to being an expert behind the wheel. He will address the needs of neurodiverse teens and young adults as they contemplate becoming a licensed driver. He will also focus on the strategies he uses for driving and how driving has opened his world to new heights. \nWednesday\, March 15 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. \nRegister online. \nPresented by SPED*NET

SUMMARY:How School Interventions Affect Your Kids Who Are Wired Differently
DESCRIPTION:Children with autism\, non-learning verbal disorders (NVLD)\, or ADHD have two things in common: their brains process differently from those of other kids and they are often traumatized in school. \nSchools traditionally focus on kids’ behavior\, instead of on the experiences that led to such behavior. This is especially true if their actions distract other children. However\, children who are not accomplishing work “at the level of their potential” or are “oppositional” or “noncompliant” may be doing the best they can. Negative feedback only discourages them and leads to a sense of frustration and shame. Parents also often feel helpless when trying to get schools to better understand their kids. \nClinical psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, and therapist Robert Bernstein\, MA\, will discuss why it’s critical for schools to focus on “what’s the child experiencing” in order to genuinely understand their behavior and help them succeed. \nRegister online. \nA video recording of this event will also be available online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA

SUMMARY:Children with High(er) Functioning Autism — Instruction\, Services and Supports Covered by Insurance
DESCRIPTION:One of the best-kept secrets in the world of health insurance companies is that children (toddlers to 21) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders qualify for significant amounts of services in their homes and communities. This could be up to 30 hours each week for several years\, with most of the services covered by insurance. The important question is: What would you want your children to learn and join if you had many hours of enrichment\, support and staff per week? \nIn this program sponsored by SPED*NET\, clinical psychologist and educational consultant Michael J. Weiss\, PhD\, will discuss some of the most important instructions your children need and how to get it covered by insurance. He will describe a curriculum aimed at children on the spectrum who have good verbal skills\, yet struggle with behavior and socializing with peers. The instruction ranges from promoting an understanding of nuanced and symbolic language (e.g.\, idioms\, fables) to following conversations and storylines (TV/movie/story reading “therapy”) and teaching about other people’s perspectives\, thoughts and feelings (called “Theory of Mind”). In addition to the instruction\, a key curriculum goal is to connect kids to socialize together\, with close staff supervision.

SUMMARY:SPED*NET Presentation: Helping Your Child Understand Their Autism — RESCHEDULED to MAY 7
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for April\, but it will now take place on Wednesday\, May 7. \nWhen parents get an autism diagnosis for their child\, they might be relieved to know what’s happening\, but\, most likely\, they will also be fearful. Bernstein will explore these questions and more in this practical and helpful seminar. \nRegister online for this free event. Presented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA. \n
