They also witnessed firsthand the human cost of progress as they fought to survive amid turmoil and disease. \nThe Great Divide is a TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick\, an Indie Next Pick\, a LibraryReads Pick. It has been named a Best of the Month Pick by Amazon\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times as well. \nHenriquez wrote four books\, including The Book of Unknown Americans\, a New York Times Notable Book of 2014 and one of Amazon’s Top 10 Best Books of the Year. It was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. \nHenriquez is also the author of The World in Half and Come Together\, Fall Apart: A Novella and Stories. She additionally earned the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation Award\, a grant by Sandra Cisneros honoring her father. Obtaining her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduating from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, Henriquez now lives in Illinois. \nWiltonian Joanna Ecke will interview Henriquez. SUMMARY:The Secret WWII Concentration Camp Diary of Odd Nansen
DESCRIPTION:The New Yorker hails From Day to Day\, the World War II concentration camp diary\, as “among the most compelling documents to come out of the war\,”. Secretly written by Odd Nansen\, a Norwegian\, it is one of only a handful ever translated into English. Nansen\, arrested in January 1942\, was held captive in various Nazi camps in Norway and Germany. During this time he wrote this inspiring diary illuminating daily struggles. It chiefly illustrates not only his survival\, but the fight to preserve his sanity and maintain his humanity.  \nTimothy Boyce rescued the diary from oblivion after having been out of print for over 60 years. He discovered it from reading the memoir of another Holocaust survivor. Nansen saved this 10 year-old boy while both were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen. Through selected readings\, Boyce will discuss and explain who Nansen was. Moreover\, he discusses why he was arrested\, why he wrote the diary\, how he preserved it\, and why this diary is as important today as it was when first written. Boyce will also sell his book at the event. \nBoyce practiced law for many years\, most recently serving as the Managing Partner of the Charlotte\, NC office of Dechert LLP\, an international law firm. His articles appear in The Quarterly Journal of Military History\, World War II Magazine\, The Scandinavian Review and Viking Magazine. They will learn that nature is much more interesting than electronic devices.”— Dr. Temple Grandin \nVulnerable populations — such as neurodiverse or physically challenged individuals — are at an elevated risk of suffering from isolation and stress-related illnesses. Gardening is a good solution since it proves beneficial to physical\, cognitive\, and emotional health. This book gives readers all the information and resources they’ll need to get started! \nMays is the author of Your Child’s Motor Development Story\, highlighting the crucial importance of sensory exploration and natural play for healthy development. An occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration for many years\, she has conducted workshops in a variety of settings and provided consultation to parents\, educators and health care providers. For the past 10 years she has immersed herself in gardening\, working with farmers and assisting in the development of children’s garden programs. She developed and currently leads a garden group for special needs adults.
