SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: “The Ghosts of Eden Park: The Bootleg King\, the Women Who Pursued Him\, and the Murder That Shocked Jazz-Age America” by Karen Abbott
DESCRIPTION:Join the next Booked for Lunch book talk on Zoom! Looking for a great read\, something engaging and informative? The Wilton Historical Society hosts a lunchtime book discussion group that focuses on history. We welcome one and all! \n“Gatsby-era noir at its best.” – says Erik Larson \nThe Ghosts of Eden Park: The Bootleg King\, the Women Who Pursued Him\, and the Murder That Shocked Jazz-Age America is the choice for the next Booked for Lunch. It is the epic true-crime story of the most successful bootlegger in American history and the murder that shocked the nation\, from the author of Sin in the Second City and Liar\, Temptress\, Soldier\, Spy. \nThe discussion will feature a book talk with the author\, New York Times Bestselling author Karen Abbott. \nIn the early days of Prohibition\, long before Al Capone became a household name\, a German immigrant named George Remus quits practicing law and starts trafficking whiskey. Within two years he’s a multi-millionaire. The press calls him “King of the Bootleggers\,” writing breathless stories about the Gatsby-esque events he and his glamorous second wife\, Imogene\, host at their Cincinnati mansion\, with party favors ranging from diamond jewelry for the men to brand-new cars for the women. By the summer of 1921\, Remus owns 35 percent of all the liquor in the United States. \nPioneering prosecutor Mabel Walker Willebrandt is determined to bring him down. Willebrandt’s bosses at the Justice Department hired her right out of law school\, assuming she’d pose no real threat to the cozy relationship they maintain with Remus. Eager to prove them wrong\, she dispatches her best investigator\, Franklin Dodge\, to look into his empire. It’s a decision with deadly consequences. With the fledgling FBI on the case\, Remus is quickly imprisoned for violating the Volstead Act. Her husband behind bars\, Imogene begins an affair with Dodge. Together\, they plot to ruin Remus\, sparking a bitter feud that soon reaches the highest levels of government — and that can only end in murder. \nCombining deep historical research with novelistic flair\, The Ghosts of Eden Park is the unforgettable\, stranger-than-fiction story of a rags-to-riches entrepreneur and a long-forgotten heroine\, of the excesses and absurdities of the Jazz Age\, and of the infinite human capacity to deceive. \nThe Ghosts of Eden Park was an instant New York Times bestseller\, an Edgar Award finalist for best fact crime\, an Indie Next pick\, an Amazon best book of 2019\, and a Smithsonian Magazine top-10 history book of 2019! \nAbbott has written for The New Yorker\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Washington Post\, Smithsonian Magazine\, and other publications\, and has appeared on the History Channel\, “CBS Sunday Morning\,” AMC’s “Making of the Mob\,” the Travel Channel’s “Monumental Mysteries\,” and the Discovery Channel. \nRegistration is essential. Register by email by email. After you register\, you will receive a confirmation\, Zoom session ID Code\, and instructions about how to submit questions.

SUMMARY:The Modern American Novel with Mark Schenker (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns via Zoom in a continuation of his 2021 lectures on classic novels\, presented by the Wilton Library. \nBeginning on Feb. 24\, the event will run from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. every Thursday except for Mar. 10.  \nHaving discussed the Victorian novel last spring and the modern British novel this past fall\, he turns now to American fiction in the first decades of the 20th century. With reference to masterworks by five acclaimed American authors\, he will consider the changing nature of the novel as an art form\, the rise of modernism\, the influence of the First World War\, and the ways in which American fiction of the period resembles and differs from English novels of the same era. \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week: February 24 – The House of Mirth\, March 3 – Winesburg\, Ohio\, March 17 – This Side of Paradise\, March 24 – In Our Time\, March 31 – The Sound and the Fury. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. Register online or call 203-762-6334. You will automatically be registered for all five sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:The Modern American Novel with Mark Schenker (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns via Zoom in a continuation of his 2021 lectures on classic novels for Wilton Library. Here are the novels for each week: March 3 — Winesburg\, Ohio; March 17 — This Side of Paradise; March 24 — In Our Time; March 31 — The Sound and the Fury. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration is required. You will automatically be registered for all five sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Senior Center Book Discussion: Five Days in London\, May 1940
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Senior Center as Michael Bellacosa leads a discussion of John Lukacs‘s “Five Days in London\, May 1940.” \nThis group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May\, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center\, 180 School Road\, Wilton. \nThe five days in 1940 from May 24 through May 28 in London were among the most consequential in world history. Just two weeks after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister\, and with the British Army bottled up backs against the English Channel at Dunkirk\, the fate of Western Civilization hung in the balance. Historian John Lukacs takes us through a fascinating\, behind-the-scenes account of the struggle inside Britain’s War Cabinet between Winston Churchill and Lord Halifax: Churchill advocating standing alone against Hitler even unto death; and Halifax arguing for a negotiated settlement with the Nazi dictator. Even though we know the outcome\, the book reads like a tense political thriller. The Boston Globe said that it “is a relatively compact book\, but it has the power and sweep of Shakespeare’s chronicle plays….One of Lukacs’ impressive strengths is a gripping narrative drive. He is lucid and splendidly readable\, and furthermore\, commands a host of dramatic characters.”

SUMMARY:Four Masterpieces of Modern American Fiction Between the World Wars (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns in a continuation of his 2021-2022 lectures on classic novels. This series will be offered via Zoom but with a bonus: the final session will be in-person in the Brubeck Room (as well as on Zoom) with a short reception after the lecture to chat with Mark and each other at the series conclusion. \nMark will lecture on four celebrated novels\, books that illustrate how the American novel expanded to include the experience of urban immigrants and rural African-Americans; the devastating effects of the Great Depression and its testing of the promise of the American Dream; and in general a more inclusive consideration of just how varied are the people in “We\, the People.” \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week: June 2 – Henry Roth – Call It Sleep; June 9 – Zora Neale Hurston – Their Eyes Were Watching God; June 23 – John Steinbeck – The Grapes of Wrath; June 30 – Carson McCullers – The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. You will automatically be registered for all four sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.
