DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of Wall Street\, Delmonico’s from 1827 to the 1980s shaped New York City’s restaurant scene. Under the original ownership of the Delmonico brothers\, Pietro and Giovanni\, Delmonico’s introduced the first farm-to-table concept\, à la carte dining — complete with white tablecloths and menus — but most notably created the phenomenon called the “power lunch.” The impact of World War I and the era of Prohibition caused the family to cease operations\, shuttering the restaurant in 1923. In 1926\, Oscar Tucci\, a Tuscan immigrant\, took over ownership and developed a strict code of hospitality\, etiquette\, and operations coupled with legendary libations and superb fare known as the Delmonico way. \nWilton Library will welcome local author Max Tucci\, Oscar’s grandson\, for an author talk about The Delmonico Way\, which welcomes readers to a world when dining out was a glamorous affair. Max and his celebrity chef friends offer timeless recipes and he shares his tips for recreating the magic of the Delmonico way at home. As a bonus\, there will be a screening of a companion documentary film directed by Dutch filmmaker Michiel ten Kleij. \nAfter a brief introduction\, the Brubecks will read some excerpts from the book and then the 60-minute film will be presented. To conclude the event\, the Brubecks will sign and sell copies of their book (which is not yet available in the United States). \nEmbracing his heritage\, Darius Brubeck\, son of legendary jazz musician Dave Brubeck\, built on his father’s legacy as a jazz ambassador overcoming formidable challenges to inaugurate jazz education in apartheid South Africa. Playing the Changes is a film about the social impact of jazz music. Besides being a jazz legend\, Dave Brubeck was a civil-rights advocate and his son\, Darius\, followed in his footsteps by becoming socially engaged in South Africa during the Apartheid Era. \nDarius Brubeck is an internationally renowned pianist\, composer\, and bandleader. He was head of Jazz Studies and Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 1983 to 2006\, when he moved to London and established The Darius Brubeck Quartet. \nCatherine Brubeck has worked in publishing\, conference organizing\, and music management in New York. DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. It importantly explores laborers\, locals\, activists\, doctors\, scientists\, and others interwoven stories. They are clearly the diverse unsung heroes who lived and worked alongside the massive project. They also witnessed firsthand the human cost of progress as they fought to survive amid turmoil and disease. \nThe Great Divide is a TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick\, an Indie Next Pick\, a LibraryReads Pick. It has been named a Best of the Month Pick by Amazon\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times as well. \nHenriquez wrote four books\, including The Book of Unknown Americans\, a New York Times Notable Book of 2014 and one of Amazon’s Top 10 Best Books of the Year. It was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. \nHenriquez is also the author of The World in Half and Come Together\, Fall Apart: A Novella and Stories. She additionally earned the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation Award\, a grant by Sandra Cisneros honoring her father. Obtaining her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduating from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, Henriquez now lives in Illinois. \nWiltonian Joanna Ecke will interview Henriquez. SUMMARY:The Secret WWII Concentration Camp Diary of Odd Nansen
DESCRIPTION:The New Yorker hails From Day to Day\, the World War II concentration camp diary\, as “among the most compelling documents to come out of the war\,”. Secretly written by Odd Nansen\, a Norwegian\, it is one of only a handful ever translated into English. Nansen\, arrested in January 1942\, was held captive in various Nazi camps in Norway and Germany. During this time he wrote this inspiring diary illuminating daily struggles. It chiefly illustrates not only his survival\, but the fight to preserve his sanity and maintain his humanity.  \nTimothy Boyce rescued the diary from oblivion after having been out of print for over 60 years. He discovered it from reading the memoir of another Holocaust survivor. Nansen saved this 10 year-old boy while both were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen. Through selected readings\, Boyce will discuss and explain who Nansen was. Moreover\, he discusses why he was arrested\, why he wrote the diary\, how he preserved it\, and why this diary is as important today as it was when first written. Boyce will also sell his book at the event. \nBoyce practiced law for many years\, most recently serving as the Managing Partner of the Charlotte\, NC office of Dechert LLP\, an international law firm. His articles appear in The Quarterly Journal of Military History\, World War II Magazine\, The Scandinavian Review and Viking Magazine.
