SUMMARY:Webinar with School Psychologist Dave Sylvestro: Special Needs Kids\, Extraordinary Parenting\, Strong Siblings
DESCRIPTION:Join SPED*NET for this webinar\, “Special Needs Kids\, Extraordinary Parenting\, Strong Siblings\,” \nFor siblings\, the experience of having a brother or sister with special needs can be uniquely enriching. Among other things\, it provides opportunities to develop empathy\, acceptance and appreciation of differences\, and it encourages learning about various relationships. On the other hand\, siblings can also feel deeply confused\, emotionally neglected and limited in their ability to achieve. \nSchool psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will examine how having a child with special needs can affect all family members and explain how parents can be proactive in ensuring\, as best as possible\, that siblings don’t feel sidelined when attention is necessarily focused on their sibs with special needs. \nSylvestro will also discuss how to keep tabs on the emotional climate of the household; educate\, explain and elicit questions from siblings (and others); ensure all kids feel prized\, recognized and celebrated; and enhance communication between parents/caregivers. \nThere is no charge for participation in this event. Register online. \nThe event is presented by SPED*NET in partnership with the Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA.

SUMMARY:Being on the Same Page - How Parents Can Remain Effective Partners When Raising Kids with Special Needs
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton will host Todd Kellogg\, a licensed family therapist and board-certified behavior analyst\, on Wednesday\, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wilton Library.  Kellogg will discuss how the difficulty of raising kids has increased exponentially along with the challenges of growing up in today’s world. For parents to be successful in guiding their children\, setting expectations\, and enforcing boundaries\, they need to find ways to work together and co-parent in a collaborative manner. \nMeeting the challenges of co-parenting is even more critical when kids have special needs. As parents of kids with special needs know\, everything is magnified and missteps can be that much more problematic for the child’s development. In this discussion\, Kellogg will walk you through best practices of co-parenting\, successful communication patterns\, and how to bounce back after setbacks. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Do You Live with a Picky Eater? How to Set Your Child on Track to Become a Better Eater
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library welcomes Todd Kellogg\, LMFT\, BCBA\, to present the community with explanations and solutions for how parents can help their children become better eaters. \nA picky eater is someone who eats a narrow and inadequate selection of food. The good news is that there is a wealth of evidence-based research providing practical behavior strategies on how to gradually increase the variety of foods your child will eat. \nIn this presentation\, Kellogg will explain selective eating/food refusal/picky eating and will offer strategies to promote healthy eating habits at home. \nThis in-person presentation at Wilton Library is offered by SPED*NET free of charge. SUMMARY:How School Interventions Affect Your Kids Who Are Wired Differently
DESCRIPTION:Children with autism\, non-learning verbal disorders (NVLD)\, or ADHD have two things in common: their brains process differently from those of other kids and they are often traumatized in school. \nSchools traditionally focus on kids’ behavior\, instead of on the experiences that led to such behavior. This is especially true if their actions distract other children. However\, children who are not accomplishing work “at the level of their potential” or are “oppositional” or “noncompliant” may be doing the best they can. Negative feedback only discourages them and leads to a sense of frustration and shame. Parents also often feel helpless when trying to get schools to better understand their kids. \nClinical psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, and therapist Robert Bernstein\, MA\, will discuss why it’s critical for schools to focus on “what’s the child experiencing” in order to genuinely understand their behavior and help them succeed. \nRegister online. \nA video recording of this event will also be available online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Jill Mays — "Nurturing Nature: Gardening for Special Needs"
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Thursday\, Feb. 6\, at 7 p.m. when the library along with SPED*NET will present an author talk with Jill Mays on her new book Nurturing Nature: A Guide to Gardening for Special Needs. While the guide is geared specifically toward individuals with special needs\, it has much to offer gardening groups of all ages and abilities as well as anyone starting out. \n“Nurturing Nature provides lots of practical\, fun gardening activities for children. They will learn that nature is much more interesting than electronic devices.”— Dr. Temple Grandin \nVulnerable populations — such as neurodiverse or physically challenged individuals — are at an elevated risk of suffering from isolation and stress-related illnesses. Gardening is a good solution since it proves beneficial to physical\, cognitive\, and emotional health. This book gives readers all the information and resources they’ll need to get started! \nMays is the author of Your Child’s Motor Development Story\, highlighting the crucial importance of sensory exploration and natural play for healthy development. An occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration for many years\, she has conducted workshops in a variety of settings and provided consultation to parents\, educators and health care providers. For the past 10 years she has immersed herself in gardening\, working with farmers and assisting in the development of children’s garden programs. She developed and currently leads a garden group for special needs adults. Mays lives with her husband\, Eric\, their Portuguese water dog and a flock of chickens at the far end of Cape Cod. \nSPED*NET\, Special Education Network\, Ltd.\, is a volunteer-run nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping parents of children with special needs become their children’s best advocates throughout the special services process and the transition to college\, employment or other post-secondary pursuits. The organization strives to empower parents\, support families and change the lives of children with special needs. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell copies of the book\, which Mays will sign. A portion of the proceeds benefits Wilton Library. \nRegistration is required. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Parenting in Partnership: Blending Perspectives and Perceptions for More Strategic Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Being the parent of a child with special needs is often a confusing\, frustrating and deflating experience. The different experiences each parent has with their children can contribute to quite different perspectives on how best to guide them. \nIt’s a struggle to parent from the same page when we sometimes question if we’re even in the same book. School psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss how parents can work to better sync their parenting philosophies and policies to be on the same page. Topics include enhancing parents’ knowledge base related to their child’s overall profile\, practicing the language of effective conflict resolution and expanding their affective vocabulary — the language of emotions. \nThis free event is an in-person presentation. Register online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA.
