SUMMARY:Music in Nature: Music on the Hill Chamber Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill opens its fall season with Music in Nature\, a concert of the Chamber Chorus–12 pro singers–with artistic directors David H. Connell and Ellen Dickinson. \nConnell conducts a stirring and contemplative program of works by notable contemporary composers:  Finzi\, Górecki\, Hovhaness\, Paulus\, and Whitacre. Selections\, which range from a setting of ancient Chinese poetry to a song of the anti-apartheid movement\, take full advantage of these high caliber voices and the venue’s vibrant acoustics. Nature recurs as a grounding and restorative theme. \nThe Chamber Chorus\, known for impeccable a capella performance\, is Music on the Hill’s professional choral ensemble. It is featured in a spring and fall concert each year. \nFind the full concert calendar and subscribe to the email list on the Music on the Hill website.

SUMMARY:“Bring the Music On!” Fundraising Concert
DESCRIPTION:YOU ARE INVITED TO… \n“Bring the Music On!” Saturday\, Oct. 20\, 2018\, 6-8:30 p.m. at the Wilton Congregational Church. Join us for a marvelous concert and fundraiser to benefit sound and visual modernizations and preservations at the Church. Childcare will be provided. \n“Bring the Music On!” will include a reception at 6 p.m. in Pilgrim Hall and a piano concert at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary\, given by our Director of Music Ministries\, Eugene Sirotkine\, internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor\, who will perform selections from the piano repertoire of Chopin\, Rachmaninov\, Liszt\, Glinka\, and a delightful “rag” by J. P. Johnson. In addition\, there will be a vocal performance by Rev. Dr. Anne Coffman. \nThe Church is a historical beacon in the community ~ an institution in the Town of Wilton. We want to be a good steward of our church\, not only the brick and mortar\, but also what happens inside. In today’s world\, the way you hear and see things is so important to your experience; we want everyone to be able to share the Message\, the Music\, the Fellowship\, and the Steeple Chimes. \nFirst\, we need to replace the current aging carillon so that the beautiful steeple chimes that we all love will live on! Next\, we are designing a modern integrated sound and visual system throughout the Church or wherever you are\, through live\, online streaming of all events. The new system will have leading-edge audio/video components\, completely integrated by wireless technology. Installed\, it will fit with the historical aesthetic and history of the Church. Finally\, there will be recording capability and Assistive Listening Devices. \n“Bring the Music On!” is just one of the funding plans for this project and is open to all in the community. Seating is limited. Tickets at $100 each are 100% tax deductible\, and may be purchased either online with your credit card or by check in the Church office 203.762.5591. \nThis will be a fun evening for a good cause. We hope you can attend or graciously support this project with a Donation. Thank you!

SUMMARY:The John Rhodes Jazz Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 43rd year\, the annual John Rhodes Jazz Symposium will be held Friday\, Feb. 22 at Wilton High School in The Little Theater. This event\, an assembly of high school jazz bands from across Fairfield County\, is known and loved for its display of enormous musical talent and rush of crowd-thrilling performances. The symposium is open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome. \nThe first of the two sessions will start at 3:30 p.m. and run until 6 p.m.; the second session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.. Following the student performances\, Fairfield County’s own Berkshire Jazz Orchestra will take the stage for a special guest performance that will include several Stan Kenton numbers. \nWilton High School band director Nick Loafman is looking forward to another year of inspiring jazz performances. “There is always so much talent on display at our annual jazz symposium. It is so fun and rewarding to hear so many students from different schools playing this great music\,” he says. \nParticipating in the symposium this year will be 10 bands from a number of Fairfield County high schools\, including Westhill\, King School\, Bethel\, Norwalk\, McMahon\, Newtown\, and Weston. Wilton High School will feature two of its jazz bands at the event—Jazz I and Jazz II. \nThe annual symposium is a cherished tradition for local jazz students. It offers them the opportunity to perform on stage as well as to receive critical feedback from an academic panel. “It is always excellent to have student musicians perform for each other in an educationally focused\, non-competitive setting\,” Loafman says. “The students always learn a great deal by performing and listening to each other.” \nIn total\, approximately 200 passionate young jazz musicians are expected to assemble for this event to share their talents and bring great entertainment to Wilton. Musical selections will range in style from traditional big band swing to Latin to ballads to contemporary jazz. \nAlso looking forward to this event is Troy Williams\, Wilton High School’s newest band director. This will be his first year at the symposium. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about this event\,” he says. “I’m excited to hear the other jazz bands coming from near and far.” \nLoafman and Williams are especially pleased to welcome back to Wilton the Berkshire Jazz Orchestra. This regional jazz group\, organized in 1987\, comprises active performers and educators from all over Fairfield County. \n“We feel so honored to have these great musicians perform here in Wilton for the students and the community\,” Loafman says. “If you love jazz\, then this will be a real treat.”

SUMMARY:Summer Choral Concert: Dvorak's Te Deum and Mass in G
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill is pleased to present its 17th Annual Summer Chorus with the choral music of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak on Thursday\, July 25 . Works will be his Te Deum (Op. 103) and the Mass in D Major (Op. 86)\, both written in the 1890s as Dvorak turned his eye towards America and his time here. These treasures are not frequently performed and so provide a special experience for singers and audience alike to explore and celebrate his style and compositions. Strings\, brass and timpani will accompany the full chorus. \nThe concert will be at the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church\, from 8-9:30 p.m. on Thursday July 25. A suggested donation of $20/person is suggested but not required. We welcome all who appreciate gorgeous choral works. \nQuestions? Contact artistic director Ellen Dickinson via email or call 203.529.3133. \nMusic on the Hill’s Summer Chorus of 60-plus voices meets each July to rehearse and perform a major choral-orchestral work. Participants–music professionals and skilled amateurs–include members of church and community choirs\, high school singers\, and those looking for a choral home. The Summer Chorus provides an opportunity for choral singers to perform a major work in summer when most choruses do not meet\, and it gives singers a chance to get to know others from many area towns and choruses.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Hot and Cool Jazz Concert with Taylor Eigsti
DESCRIPTION:On International Jazz Day 2021\, Wilton Library will broadcast its first Hot & Cool jazz concert since the season was interrupted after the smashing two-set concert of Brubecks Play Brubeck in January 2020. \nPianist Taylor Eigsti performed at Millstone – then the long-time home of jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Indeed\, Taylor works his magic on Dave’s grand piano in the dramatic two-story music room where Dave composed so much of his famous music. Wilton resident Chris Brubeck\, an award-winning composer\, and superlative trombonist and bassist\, also sat in and jammed with Taylor on a few tunes. This will be a very special one-time concert broadcast. \nThere is a non-refundable $20 fee per “ticket” (the Zoom invitation link) that is part of the registration process. This concert event was made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Visit the Wilton Library website for more details and to register.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Virtual Brubeck Brothers Quartet Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Trustees of Wilton Library invite you to join us online for a very special concert broadcast featuring the Brubeck Brothers Quartet. This concert is being offered completely for free as the Wilton Library’s gift of thanks to the town for the holidays. \nThe concert was recorded earlier this summer in the library’s Brubeck Room before a limited-size\, live audience in conjunction with the various festivities surrounding the dedication of The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library. \nMusicians Chris and Dan Brubeck\, sons of jazz giant Dave Brubeck\, head a versatile band with guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb. Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist\, trombonist\, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966. They’ve played a variety of styles in a number of different groups as well as with their father and their dynamic Brubeck Brothers Band. Although the quartet’s style is rooted in straight-ahead jazz\, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk\, blues\, and world music. \nOnline registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link. \nThe concert and The Brubeck Collection dedication event were sponsored by Fairfield County Bank.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play — POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until Sunday\, May 7\, 2023. \nPlease join Wilton Library on Thursday night\, Sept. 1 for the first Hot & Cool Jazz concert since January 2020\, featuring Triple Play\, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, guitar\, jaw harp\, percussion & vocals)\, Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals)\, and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals). Collectively they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz and classical music they perform. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nAdvance registration is strongly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Suggested donation is $10. Each registration is for one name only; register each member of a party separately. Pre-registrants should arrive by 6:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 6:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nTriple Play’s musical roots go way back (50-plus years) in each member’s history. Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group “New Heavenly Blue” (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, “Sky King” (on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. Paul deBarros\, writer for The Seattle Times and Downbeat\, commented after seeing a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival: “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm\, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” \nDave Brubeck’s last recorded performance was captured on the exciting “Triple Play Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center.” The crowd is wildly enthusiastic on this well-reviewed CD\, which also featured Joel Brown’s father\, Frank Brown on clarinet. You can often hear this innovative version of “Take Five” featuring Ruth’s polyrhythmic jaw harp and burning solos by Dave\, Joel and Chris on Sirius XM Jazz. Triple Play’s music has international reach\, as they were a hit playing with The Singapore Chinese Orchestra and returned for a second performance\, which was recorded and released on Blue Forest Records. “It all fits together because of the talent and taste of the musicians\, who groove no matter what they’re doing — and it’s tremendous fun\, to boot\,” said All About Jazz.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: The Jerry Bergonzi Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for the Jerry Bergonzi Quartet featuring Jerry Bergonzi on tenor sax\, Harvie S on acoustic bass\, Bruce Barth on piano\, and Jason Tiemann on drums. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nAdvance registration is strongly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. The suggested donation is $10. Each registration is for one name only; register each member of a party separately. Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nBergonzi is a tenor saxophonist\, composer\, author and educator who was introduced to the world of jazz by one its legends — Dave Brubeck. In the 1970s\, he toured with the Two Generations of Brubeck band that featured Dave and the three Brubeck sons: Darius\, Chris\, and Dan. Later in that decade\, he also held the sax chair in the Dave Brubeck Quartet. On the faculty of the New England Conservatory for the last 20 years\, Bergonzi teaches improvisation in ensemble settings as well as one-on-one. He still plays two weekly gigs in the Boston area and tours 130 days a year playing his own music. \nHarvie S is back in the Brubeck Room for his seventh performance — most recently in 2019 with Alan Broadbent. Harvie is an award-winning bassist\, educator\, composer\, arranger\, and producer. He has played with many of the biggest names in jazz [the list is too long to spell out] and has performed in a wide variety of jazz festivals around the globe as well as in such venues as The Blue Note\, The Iridium\, and the Kennedy Center. \nTiemann is a New York City-based jazz drummer who maintains a busy schedule as a freelance performer and educator. Admittedly drawing influence from the greats Philly Joe Jones\, Tony Williams\, Elvin Jones\, and Billy Higgins\, Tiemann is quickly forging his musical voice on the New York scene by fusing his depth of historical foundation with crisp technique and propulsive\, intuitive swing. \nJazz pianist and composer Barth has been sharing his music with listeners the world over for more than two decades. He has performed on over 100 recordings and movie soundtracks. He is equally at home playing solo piano\, leading an all-star septet and composing for a variety of ensembles. He has performed with James Moody\, Art Farmer\, Phil Woods\, Tony Bennett\, Branford Marsalis\, and Wynton Marsalis among many others.

SUMMARY:CT's Own: Dream Collider: An Electroacoustic Viola Experience
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an amazing performance by Wilton’s own Nick Revel\, a violist\, improviser\, composer\, and educator who grew up K-12 in Wilton. \nFollowing his debut album “Letters to My Future Self\,” Nick Revel evolves the art of layering and sound design in his new genre-phasing collection of works\, “Dream Collider\,” on Sapphire Records. This dreamy collision of Revel’s musical influences leans heavily on both pop-inspired electronic and ambient-style film music\, pulling the viola into an updated sound world that is relevant and relatable to modern audiences. Revel says of “Dream Collider\,” recorded and mixed in his home studio\, “Born of my own emotional darkness and a yearning for joy during the height of the pandemic\, this album provides a sonic fantasy of new worlds\, a reprieve from suffering\, and visions of realities beyond what is currently possible on Earth.” \nWhen Nick Revel is not touring as founding violist of the GRAMMY™ Nominated PUBLIQuartet\, he is composing\, producing\, and performing original solo pieces\, audio engineering ensembles of various shapes and sizes\, and teaching students of all ages. His recent compositions have won the Red Jasper Award Shortlist\, the Catalyst Quartet’s CQ Minute competition\, fvebyfve’s 2020 call for original scores\, and placement on top podcasts like Doug Fearn’s My Take on Music Recording. These works will appear on his forthcoming album “Dream Collider\,” available on all major platforms. He has served as artistic and executive director of the Norwalk Youth Chamber Ensembles\, co-creator of the New York String Studio\, and on the board of the Seabury Academy of Music and the Arts in Norwalk\, CT. \nNo charge. SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Songs of Ships & Sailors
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for a unique concert featuring arrangements from Songs of Ships & Sailors\, a songbook written by the Castlebay Singers and published in 2021. The book contains over 160 songs gleaned from the many hundred songs they found in archives at the Maine Folklife center\, the Library of Congress\, the Helen Hartness Collection\, and several others. Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee interpret these songs with their own artistic skill\, making them attractive and available to a modern audience while retaining historic integrity and weaving in commentary relevant to the song and its provenance. \nSince 1986\, Castlebay has been weaving together Maine’s nautical and British Isles legacies\, transporting their audience through time and across the Atlantic. Lane and Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history\, legend and experience into their personable performances. Rich and exuberant renditions of traditional and original songs are supported with Celtic harp\, 14-string guitar\, fiddle & woodwinds. Castlebay has toured the Eastern US and Canada\, United Kingdom\, Ireland\, and Kosovo. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.
