DESCRIPTION:Wilton Health Department\, in conjunction with the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County\, will be holding a Seasonal Flu Vaccination Clinic this year on Saturday\, Oct. 10 and Sunday\, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Those wishing to receive a flu vaccine must register in advance and schedule an appointment. \nInfluenza (Flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses\, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. Because some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar\, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone\, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis according to CDC. \nWhile it’s not possible to say with certainty what will happen in the fall and winter\, CDC believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both be spreading. In this context\, getting a flu vaccine will be more important than ever. \nThis year\, the flu vaccine clinic will be held outdoors as a drive-through clinic at Miller Driscoll School. Due to COVID considerations\, a drive-through clinic along with appointment times will help maintain social distancing and eliminate the need for disinfecting the school building afterward. Masks will still be required\, and safety precautions will be in place to promote a safe and healthy environment for everyone. No walk-ups will be allowed\, only those driving through with an appointment will receive a vaccination. \nThe flu vaccine clinic entrance will be from the Belden Hill Rd. side of the school and all vehicles will exit onto Wolfpit Road. You may experience some minor traffic delays in that area on those days\, and residents not receiving a flu vaccination are encouraged to seek alternate routes. For safety reasons\, access to school grounds will be restricted to vaccinations only on those days. \nAll residents are encouraged to get a flu vaccine this year\, especially with the prevalence of COVID-19. Seasonal flu and COVID-19 symptoms may appear similar\, though they may affect the body differently. Receiving a flu vaccine will help reduce your risk of contracting the flu this season\, and also reduce the strain on hospitals and medical systems which continue to treat COVID-19 patients. \nFor the upcoming flu season\, flu vaccination will be very important to reduce flu occurrence because it can help reduce the overall impact of respiratory illnesses on the population and thus lessen the resulting burden on the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. \nA flu vaccine may also provide several individual health benefits\, including keeping you from getting sick with flu\, reducing the severity of your illness if you do get flu\, and reducing your risk of a flu-associated hospitalization. \nResidents of Wilton are encouraged to make a seasonal flu vaccination appointment by visiting the registration page early. You will need to download the form\, fill it out\, and bring it with you to your appointment. Some forms of insurance\, including Medicare will be accepted along with a self-pay option. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, March 31\, the Wilton Kiwanis Club has invited the Wilton community to join a Zoom discussion with Dr. Michael Mina speaking from 12:30-1 p.m. in a talk entitled\, “You have been vaccinated\, now what…. the future of Covid.” \nDr. Mina is a Professor and Epidemiologist at Harvard Public Health and also its Medical School. Kiwanis has invited him to speak to discuss the future of COVID-19 and what to do now if you are vaccinated. \nMina has at least 80 publications and has been interviewed multiple times in the press\, including an article in New York Magazine that wrote\, “Since the beginning of the pandemic last winter\, Harvard’s Michael Mina has been among the country’s most outspoken epidemiologists\, urging the public-health establishment toward a more responsive and creative approach to managing the pandemic\, particularly focused on deploying rapid COVID tests\, similar to home pregnancy tests\, to help curb the virus’s spread.” \nMina is also Chief Medical Officer for Detect\, a diagnostics company from Guilford\, CT that is creating an accurate\, fast and convenient molecular COVID-19 test and recruiting test takers to participate in a research study. Detect will be in Wilton on Friday\, April 9 offering free PCR testing as well as a Detect test to anyone interested\, and a $100-$165 Amazon gift card to those who qualify for the clinical study.

The data study results are in. COVID-19 has directly made an impact on women’s lives:  their employment\, pay\, healthcare\, mental health\, safety\, education\, career\, housing\, and food security. \nYou are invited to attend an important discussion and to learn the economic impact of COVID-19 on Connecticut women on Thursday\, May 13\, at 7 p.m. \nGuest speaker\, Tina Courpas\, Executive Director of the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women in Connecticut\, will discuss the findings of the impact of the pandemic on significant issues in women’s lives. The PCSW was formed in 2016 as a continuation of the original state agency to provide expert research on key areas\, carry out initiatives\, and provide outreach in areas that are significant to women in Ct. PCSW is a “bipartisan organization with a non-partisan mandate\, reflecting the broad diversity of Connecticut’s women.” \nThe evening is co-sponsored by the Wilton League of Women Voters and Working Moms of Wilton. It specifically encourages active voter participation and works to increase understanding of government and major public policy issues.
