SUMMARY:Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend – and Wilton’s own — Dave Brubeck\, the Wilton Historical Society will present a special exhibit\, Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album. Opening Friday\, Feb. 21\, the exhibition will run through April 18\, 2020. \nWhen he bestowed upon the jazz great the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor at the White House in 2009\, President Barack Obama stated\, “In order to understand America\, you have to understand jazz\, and in order to understand jazz\, you have to understand Dave Brubeck.”  As a pianist\, bandleader and composer\, Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) is widely acknowledged as one of America’s most significant post-swing era jazz musicians\, creating a body of music that was bold and accessible. \nAll are invited to the opening reception on Friday\, Feb. 21\, from 4-6 p.m. (no charge). The exhibition incorporates material from the Dave Brubeck:  Jazz Ambassador show\, which detailed his illustrious 70-year career and was presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center soon after Brubeck’s death\, and highlights other facets of his life such as his impact as a composer\, a performer\, a civil rights activist and as family man. \nThe Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album exhibition presents additional material that speaks to Dave’s life in Wilton with his wife Iola\, and six kids\, including musicians Darius\, Chris and Dan. Growing up on a vast ranch in California\, he learned to ride\, how to be a cowboy; visitors will be able to see a Western-style saddle that belonged to his father\, as well as Dave’s cowboy hat. A highlight of the exhibition is the opportunity to see a new short film produced by the Brubeck family which contains rare footage of “Cowboy Dave.” Another section of the film shows Wilton composer\, lyricist\, pianist\, and educator Eugenie Rocherolle interviewing fellow musician Dave Brubeck. \nEntrance is free for Wilton Historical Society members; entry is $10 for non-member adults\, and free for children under 18. \nDave Brubeck 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Dave Brubeck\, the jazz composer\, pianist\, cultural ambassador\, and visionary musician\, which will take place on Dec. 6\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Brubeck for Kids: A Hands-on Jazz Exploration Workshop at Wilton Historical Society CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nCider Mill School music teacher Cheryll Ryder and museum educator Katherine Karlick will lead an engaging intro to jazz and the legacy of Wilton’s own jazz man\, Dave Brubeck\, in the Wilton Historical Society presentation\, “Brubeck for Kids: A Hands-on Jazz Exploration Workshop.” \nBrubeck’s innovative combinations of rhythms and meters\, as evidenced on his 1959 Take Five album (the greatest selling jazz record of all time) will be the inspiration for this workshop. Children will explore three music stations:  working with keyboards and headphones to try their hand at adding a musical score to visual images\, as if they are writing a score for a movie; working with xylophones; and investigating new sounds with rhythm instruments. A guided tour of “Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album” exhibition is included\, as is a snack. \nSuggested for children ages 6-12. Cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10; non-members are $15. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?\nPresident Barack Obama stated\, “In order to understand America\, you have to understand jazz\, and in order to understand jazz\, you have to understand Dave Brubeck\,” when he bestowed the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor upon the jazz great at the White House in 2009.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Dave Brubeck's Time Out- A Conversation Between Stephen Crist and Gil Harel
DESCRIPTION:To continue the celebration of the recent ribbon-cutting for The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library – and celebrate Dave Brubeck‘s birthday! – please join the library online for an engaging conversation between author and music historian Stephen Crist and musicologist Gil Harel. On Thursday\, Dec. 6 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm they will discuss Dave Brubeck’s iconic album “Time Out” as well as Brubeck’s music and life. Professor Crist of Emory University literally “wrote the book” on this album and he sat down for a discussion with Gil Harel from Naugatuck Valley Community College. \nTheir discussion was recorded in October in the library’s new archive room in conjunction with the ribbon-cutting for The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library. A recording of the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be broadcast as an introduction to the program starting at 6:30 pm with the Crist and Harel program beginning around 7 pm. \nStephen A. Crist is Chair of the Music Department at Emory University where he is also Professor of Music History. He works largely in European music of the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries\, with additional interests in hymnody and jazz. His most recent book is Dave Brubeck’s Time Out (Oxford University Press\, 2019). Professor Crist received his Ph.D. (music history) from Brandeis University\, after an M.M. (music theory) from the University of South Florida\, and a B.A. (English and American literature and language) from Harvard University. \nGil Harel\, Associate Professor of Music at Naugatuck Valley Community College\, is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from renaissance madrigals to modal jazz of the 1960s. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching.” At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, and renaissance madrigal choir. He also teaches music history\, music theory\, ear training\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nOnline registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library Author Talk: Philip Clark — Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an in-person presentation by Philip Clark\, author of the acclaimed biography\, Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time. First published in 2020\, the centennial of Brubeck’s birth\, a new expanded edition has just come out in the U.K. with a U.S. release to follow. \nClark will discuss the backstory about how his book came into being and fill us in on the expanded content in his new edition along with busting some myths about the jazz legend. He will also incorporate musical examples to illustrate how many of Dave’s grooves and harmonies have seeped into rock\, pop\, reggae\, hip-hop and more. We’ll hear how Dave’s influences have landed in places where jazz musicians and composers don’t typically leave their marks. \nClark is a music journalist and author who has written for many leading publications including The Wire\, Gramophone\, The Guardian\, Jazzwise\, Financial Times and London Review of Books. He is trained as a composer\, but these days prefers to play improvised music. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play — POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until Sunday\, May 7\, 2023. \nPlease join Wilton Library on Thursday night\, Sept. 1 for the first Hot & Cool Jazz concert since January 2020\, featuring Triple Play\, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, guitar\, jaw harp\, percussion & vocals)\, Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals)\, and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals). Collectively they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz and classical music they perform. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nAdvance registration is strongly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Suggested donation is $10. Each registration is for one name only; register each member of a party separately. Pre-registrants should arrive by 6:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 6:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nTriple Play’s musical roots go way back (50-plus years) in each member’s history. Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group “New Heavenly Blue” (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, “Sky King” (on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. Paul deBarros\, writer for The Seattle Times and Downbeat\, commented after seeing a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival: “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm\, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” \nDave Brubeck’s last recorded performance was captured on the exciting “Triple Play Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center.” The crowd is wildly enthusiastic on this well-reviewed CD\, which also featured Joel Brown’s father\, Frank Brown on clarinet. You can often hear this innovative version of “Take Five” featuring Ruth’s polyrhythmic jaw harp and burning solos by Dave\, Joel and Chris on Sirius XM Jazz. Triple Play’s music has international reach\, as they were a hit playing with The Singapore Chinese Orchestra and returned for a second performance\, which was recorded and released on Blue Forest Records. “It all fits together because of the talent and taste of the musicians\, who groove no matter what they’re doing — and it’s tremendous fun\, to boot\,” said All About Jazz.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event - Playing the Changes: Jazz at an African University and on the Road (a memoir by Darius and Cathy Brubeck)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special book launch event – Playing the Changes: Jazz at an African University and on the Road (a memoir by Darius and Cathy Brubeck). As a bonus\, there will be a screening of a companion documentary film directed by Dutch filmmaker Michiel ten Kleij. \nAfter a brief introduction\, the Brubecks will read some excerpts from the book and then the 60-minute film will be presented. A Q&A segment will follow. To conclude the event\, the Brubecks will sign and sell copies of their book (which is not yet available in the United States). \nEmbracing his heritage\, Darius Brubeck\, son of legendary jazz musician Dave Brubeck\, built on his father’s legacy as a jazz ambassador overcoming formidable challenges to inaugurate jazz education in apartheid South Africa. Playing the Changes is a film about the social impact of jazz music. Besides being a jazz legend\, Dave Brubeck was a civil-rights advocate and his son\, Darius\, followed in his footsteps by becoming socially engaged in South Africa during the Apartheid Era. \nDarius Brubeck is an internationally renowned pianist\, composer\, and bandleader. He was head of Jazz Studies and Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 1983 to 2006\, when he moved to London and established The Darius Brubeck Quartet. \nCatherine Brubeck has worked in publishing\, conference organizing\, and music management in New York. On her return to South Africa\, she initiated and arranged tours and concerts for students and professional South African jazz groups. \nThere is no charge for this event. Registration is suggested. Register on the Wilton Library website or call 203.762.6334.

The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/19/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nThe year 1959 might be described as no less than a seismic year for jazz. Indeed\, this relatively short stretch bore witness to the release of many iconic\, innovative\, and forward-looking albums. Celebrated figures including Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Dave Brubeck\, Charles Mingus\, Ornette Coleman\, and more wrote and performed at this time. During this introductory lecture\, Dr. Harel considers one of the albums recorded in the spring of that year: Kind of Blue. Featuring songs such as “So What” and “Blue in Green\,” this record is remembered both for the novel writing as well as the individual contributions of musicians including Davis\, Coltrane\, Bill Evans\, and others. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College\, where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching”. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he has been presented with the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. In 2020\, he was honored with the coveted Connecticut Board of Regents (BOR) Teaching Award. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegistration is strongly recommended online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Brubeck's Time Out
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the second program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on 1959’s seminal jazz albums. The series runs as follows: \n• March 20: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n• April 10: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n• May 22: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n• June 19: Post-1959 Impact and Aftermath \nAmong the jazz albums of 1959\, Time Out\, recorded by the Brubeck Quartet at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City\, contains some of the most unusual innovations. Fresh off a State Department-sponsored trip abroad\, the quartet recorded a litany of songs featuring unusual rhythmic and metrical features. Despite the unusual nature of the rhythms that suffuse the album\, it still quickly gained popularity. It rose to No. 2 on the Billboard pop albums chart\, while its signature single\, “Take Five” became the first jazz single to sell 1 million copies. During this program\, Professor Harel will discuss the album’s genesis\, the extraordinary musical features\, and its place in 1959 and beyond. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interested in styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. SUMMARY:The Music of the Dave Brubeck Octet: Restored and Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:An homage to The David Brubeck Octet\, the Wilton Library hosts a historic jazz concert bringing Dave Brubeck’s most famous arrangements back to life for the first time since the 1950s — led by saxophonist Jon De Lucia and his all-star jazz octet featuring grammy-winning musicians. \nThe Brubeck Octet\, formed in the 1940s\, is where Brubeck and his fellow composition students at Mills College explored musical concepts like polytonality and odd meters for the first time. \nFind more information here.

SUMMARY:Jazz Post-1959: Diverging Paths
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the final program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959. The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nJazz historians and scholars often point to 1959 as a watershed year. Indeed\, the volume and breadth of the music created in that single year has perhaps few analogues in jazz — or any other genre\, for that matter. During this program\, Professor Harel will therefore consider the critical and artistic impact of the seminal albums of 1959. In doing so\, he also discusses the trajectories pursued by the artists who made the year so special. Subsequently\, three distinct and markedly divergent directions can be analyzed. This discussion will consider them through the important works of three celebrated musicians: John Coltrane\, Miles Davis\, and Dave Brubeck. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he received the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel additionally conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegister online or call 203.762.6334.
