SUMMARY:Comstock Hill Cemetery Cleanup with Wilton Land Conservation Trust and Drum Hill Chapter NSDAR
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Independence Day 2021 and the 246th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War\, the Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, in partnership with the Drum Hill Chapter NSDAR\, invites the community to celebrate our nation’s Independence by stewarding the Comstock Hill Cemetery. The community workday will improve the trail and final resting grounds for seven Revolutionary War patriots. \nThis workday will focus on the trail that winds through the cemetery\, general brush maintenance\, and the hand-pulling of invasive species. Volunteers will dig\, rake\, and cut to improve the trails and clear overhanging vegetation. \nVolunteers will meet on Sunday\, June 27\, at 1:30 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Signal Hill Road trail entrance. Work should wrap up at about 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. Wilton Land Conservation Trust staff will be onsite to provide instruction and ensure everyone stays safe. \nIt’s recommended that volunteers should wear long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sturdy boots\, and gloves. In addition\, bring water\, snacks\, lunch\, and work gloves. WLCT Staff will provide tools\, but participants are always welcome to bring their tools: loppers\, hand saws\, rakes\, hand trowels\, etc. \nPARKING:\nVolunteers are invited to park along the roadside of Signal Hill Road. While we don’t have an address for the cemetery\, we recommend parking roadside near 231 Signal Hill Road. Please be mindful of our neighbor’s lawns and driveways. Parking on Ridgefield Road can be dangerous and is not recommended

SUMMARY:"Fire and Ice" Ice Cream Social at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 1 from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm the Wilton Historical Society Museum Complex will be buzzing with a fun event perfect for kids\, families\, and new residents. The “Fire and Ice” Ice Cream Social is a great way to get into the Fourth of July spirit. \nDocents in Colonial attire will demonstrate all manner of Colonial activities\, from firing Revolutionary War-style muskets to spinning and blacksmithing. Kids can try their hands at spoke shaving\, weaving\, and flax-breaking. Enjoy the ice cream social courtesy of the Drum Hill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Captain David Hawley Betts Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.). Learn about the Verbruggen Cannon\, an exact reproduction of a 1776 artillery also known as a “Grasshopper” and find out how it was loaded and fired. \nThe Wilton Historical Society will also debut a new exhibition: “Rebels and Redcoats: The Aftermath of the Battle of Ridgefield”. The highlight is an extraordinary Revolutionary War document\, a letter dated April 26\, 1777\, between General Selleck Silliman and Major General David Wooster\, which may be the last letter sent by General Wooster before he was killed the next day at the Battle of Ridgefield. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new “History is Here” video by Associate Curator Nick Foster. \nDrum Hill Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold a patriot look-up session at the ice cream social. Experienced genealogists will be on hand to help you discover your patriotic roots. You may have an ancestor who assisted in the Revolutionary War. Perhaps your ancestor fought; provided food\, clothing\, shelter; or signed an oath of allegiance. There were many ways to be a Revolutionary War patriot. Also on hand – members of the Captain David Hawley Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)

SUMMARY:The Weekend The British Burned Danbury
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special presentation on the Weekend the British Burned Danbury given by the Danbury-based host of the popular podcast on Connecticut history\, Mike Allen. \nIn 1777\, early in the Revolutionary War\, a weekend military mission into inland Connecticut was supposed to be a seminal military victory for the British in their attempts to put down the Patriot uprising. The objective was to march inland from Long Island Sound and remove Danbury as a key supply center for the Patriot military. It was the first time the British had marched inland to do battle during the war\, and the strategy did not work out as planned. Included in the presentation are the burning of Danbury as well as the Battles of Ridgefield and Saugatuck on the march back to Long Island Sound through Wilton. \nAllen specializes in bringing local history to life through his background in journalism\, radio broadcasting\, podcasting and public speaking. He is the producer and host of the popular podcast on Connecticut history\, Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path\, rated in the top 5-10% of podcasts nationally. For 10 years\, Allen was News Director at western Connecticut radio station i-95 FM (WRKI-FM) before becoming Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury. During a subsequent\, 25-year corporate career\, he worked\, lived\, and traveled internationally\, specializing in public speaking\, communications\, and marketing. Allen has lived in Connecticut for more than 50 years and currently resides in Danbury. \nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library and the Drum Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. \nRegistration is recommended online or call 203.762.6334.
