SUMMARY:STOP the BLEED First Aid Class
DESCRIPTION:Today we live in a world where terrorism\, the actions of unstable people\, and the dangerous impulses of friends and relatives are very real and becoming increasingly more frequent. \nMassive bleeding from any cause\, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR\, the public must learn proper bleeding control techniques\, including how to use their hands\, dressings\, and tourniquets. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding\, within five to 10 minutes. \nHowever\, anyone at the scene can act as immediate responder and save lives if they know what to do. \nThe Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps is offering this FREE training to teens in cooperation with Our Lady of Fatima’s Youth Group. \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, Oct. 30\, 2018 from 7-8 p.m. (EDT) \nWHERE: Our Lady of Fatima Parish Center (229 Danbury Rd.) \nFAQs: \nAre there registration requirements? \nYes. It is important that each student be given adequate time and instruction with an instructor. We need to know in advance as to how many participants to expect\, to ensure we have enough supplies and instructors on hand\, thereby making advanced registration required. \nParticpants will be required to fill out a waiver that they should complete and bring to the event. This waiver will be sent to you via email after registering. \nAre there any age restrictions for attending this class? \nDue to the nature of the content of this paticular class\, the participants should be at least 13 years of age. The target audience for this particular class is teeens between 13 and 18 years old. \nIs there a cost associated with this event? \nNo. This training is offered free of charge as a service to the community by the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps. That being said\, WVAC is 100% a volunteer\, non-for-profit 501(c)3 organization\, and not a department within the Town of Wilton\, that relies heavily on donations from the community. Donations are by no means a prerequisite for attending this course but should you so desire\, you will have the opportunity to donate when registering for the event through this site\, or at the event itself. \nWho can I contact with any questions? \nYou may contact Brian McDermott\, WVAC vice president and community events coordinator via email. Additionally\, contact Mara Fleming\, coordinator of youth ministry at OLF via email.

SUMMARY:Ambler Farm’s Beekeeping Program
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard the buzz? Ambler Farm is starting a Beekeeping Program! \nHoney bees are fascinating creatures that play an incredibly important role in our food chain through pollination. This program is designed for adults with a casual interest as well as beginning beekeepers. Participants will follow our Ambler Farm honey bees throughout the year\, beginning in April with hiving a new package of bees. We will then monitor our bees throughout the spring\, summer and fall. It is expected that there will be eight opportunities for registrants to visit our bees and monitor their progress as the hive grows. If you have your own hive\, this is a great way to learn about your bees and compare them to trends we are seeing in the Ambler hives. \nWe plan to meet on Sundays from 1-2 p.m.\, four times in the spring\, twice in the summer and twice in the fall. Meeting dates will be determined by the arrival of our bees and their progress. \nAmbler Farm program director Kevin Meehan has been a beekeeper for over 10 years and brings a wealth of information and experiences to share with participants. Registration is limited. Please email Meehan with questions and if you are starting your own hive in conjunction with this program. \nThe cost to participate is $150 for non-members\, $130 for members.

SUMMARY:Garden Dialogues 2019: Wilton\, CT
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 the Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Garden Dialogues program\, which provides exclusive access to exceptional landscapes\, will go coast to coast\, from elegant estates in Greenwich\, Connecticut\, and waterfront retreats in Maine\, to one of the oldest zinfandel vineyards in California and other sites in Florida\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, New York\, Virginia\, Washington State\, Washington\, D.C.\, and elsewhere. These projects have been designed by some of today’s most talented and visionary landscape architects. \nCider Ridge Farm is located on the outskirts of Wilton. The farm encompasses 16 acres of preserved meadows and a historic working orchard. An 18th-century agricultural lane with fieldstone walls runs along the ridgeline of the property\, creating a purposeful divide between the site for a new homestead and the existing agrarian landscape. Two phases of work defined this project. The first\, a new home for a young and growing family on the south side of the property; the second\, the comprehensive restoration of the original 19th-century homestead on the northeast corner of the site. \nThe landscape architecture firm\, STIMSON\, worked closely with the owners to create a multi-generational homestead that expressed the contemporary needs of the modern family\, while preserving the integrity of the historic farm. Principals Stephen Stimson\, FASLA and Lauren Stimson\, ASLA will lead the design discussion and share how the juxtaposition of old and new\, rustic and modern\, became a guiding language for the materials\, planting palette and overall landscape expression of the project. \nOld Farm\nThe historic farmhouse dates back to the mid 1700s\, with connections to the Revolutionary War and stories of British troops staying overnight. Over the last century\, the farm raised horses and historically\, race horses. The careful siting of the birthing stalls on the New York side of the property meant the horses could be part of the New York racing circuit. The historic farm lane remains the landmark that organizes the site\, dividing the farm between Connecticut and New York. The stonewalls that define the lane were carefully restored and new openings were created at key moments to provide views and connections between the two homes. A new court\, a reclaimed bluestone terrace and a working garden of raised beds were integrated into the historic home. A series of walls around the old farmhouse were rebuilt using site fieldstone\, and define the original formal tea lawn. \n \nNew Farm\nThe new farm landscape was conceived as a series of outdoor rooms adjacent to the house\, with a working kitchen garden and perennial garden stepping up to the historic lane. The garden is a collection that reinterpret the site’s meadows\, selected for seasonal display of color and texture. Above the gardens\, a new pool\, pavilion and play garden converge at the historic lane\, carefully inserted between fragments of the historic farm walls. The use of rusted steel\, granite and reclaimed stone respond to the site’s heritage\, yet also express the Owners’ affinity for modern art and architecture. These materials also carry forward the property’s legacy\, in the hands of the farmer\, they shaped this landscape for well over a century. \n \nManagement\nMaintaining a legacy property like Cider Ridge Farm requires a great deal of planning\, effort and expertise. Burt Demarche\, President of The LaurelRock Company who constructed the project with STIMSON\, will join the dialogue to discuss landscape strategies\, curation and long-term management at the Farm. \nAttendees will enjoy a take-home harvest basket from Cider Ridge Farm’s bountiful kitchen garden. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wilton Library Author Talk: Rebecca Hendrickson — Lessons from the Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Author and Wilton resident Rebecca Hendrickson will visit Wilton Library to talk about her debut novel\, Lessons from the Mountain\, which exposes the challenges in the education and mental health systems. \nEver since the family reunion in the Adirondack Mountains two years ago\, nothing has been the same. Annie\, the middle sister is experiencing an acute episode of postpartum depression. The youngest sister\, Cade\, has moved south to work at a school that resembles a trailer park\, determined to succeed on her own adventure. Rye is a former teacher of the year\, working in a wealthy\, litigious school district who is always put together and organized until her father begins to deteriorate. Winnie’s husband\, Don\, has become suddenly ill\, both mentally and physically\, and no doctor can explain it. The family must watch Don’s health decline while dealing with struggles of their own. Readers will also find themselves rooting for each character as they search for answers. \nHendrickson is a special education teacher at an alternative high school in Fairfield County. She previously published The Four Trimesters: Poems Highlighting the Joys of Motherhood. She and her husband and two children live in Wilton. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of the library author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. To register and for more information\, visit Wilton Library online\, or contact the library’s reference librarians at 203.762.6350 or via email.

SUMMARY:Weekend Workshops: Basket Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Baskets have been created across the world as both a useful tool and a decorative art for thousands of years. In Wilton\, both Indigenous peoples and colonial settlers used baskets large and small for all sorts of purposes\, including drying herbs\, carrying crops\, and as long-term storage containers. Even into the 20th century\, baskets were used by many of Wilton’s apple farmers during the fall harvest season. \nWeaving with rattan (also known as reed)\, continues to be a popular practice\, as it is pliable\, organic\, sturdy\, and readily available. On Saturday\, March 18\, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold its very own Basket Weaving with Rattan Workshop for kids. Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will discuss the construction and uses of baskets over time while participants become absorbed in creating their very own artifacts. A snack of Triscuits and apple juice will be offered. A perfect event for aspiring artisans! \nSuggested for ages 6-10. The fee is $10 per child for members and $15 per child for non-members. Register online or via email.
