SUMMARY:Space Race: The 20th C. Competition between Two Cold War Rivals
DESCRIPTION:The space race was a 20th century competition between two Cold War rivals\, the Soviet Union and the United States. The race\, who would be first to land a man on the Moon persisted nearly fifteen years. Each country claimed multiple victories along the journey. The competition spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites\, unmanned probes to many planets and human spaceflight in Earth orbit and to the Moon. All of these multi-million-dollar events occurred with computers featuring 100\,000 times less processing power than today’s typical mobile phone. It was dangerous work for the new heroes America called astronauts. The event that ended the competition required man to travel nearly 240\,000 miles from Earth. Winning the competition was considered necessary for each country’s national security. Learn more about how America ultimately won the race and the journey it required to achieve that goal. \nJohn Cilio is a historical storyteller\, author and researcher who has brought historical stories back to life for over 15 years. SUMMARY:Serendipity Chorale: Celebrating Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a very special celebration of Black History Month. Experience the Serendipity Chorale\, featuring professional baritone Edward Pleasant. The chorale will perform a program of gospel songs and spirituals\, along with songs from the civil rights movement. The group’s leader\, Gigi Van Dyke\, will narrate this music’s role in Black history. In particular\, she will explain how slaves sang spirituals to communicate escape routes to reach the underground railroad. \nVan Dyke has led Serendipity’s group of men and women of diverse backgrounds for 49 years. From all around Fairfield County\, music is their common denominator. The Lt. Governor’s office also honored them as a Connecticut Treasure “for long devotion to spreading smiles and songs throughout southwestern Connecticut.” The chorale even sang with Andy Williams and Pete Seeger and performed at the Levitt Pavilion\, the Westport Playhouse and at the Norwalk Concert Hall. \nCritically acclaimed in opera\, stage\, narration\, recording\, and musical theater\, Pleasant is recognized as one of the most versatile performers of his generation. He chiefly distinguishes himself as an expressive singer and a gifted actor with brilliant comic timing. SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Making the Dirt Fly: Building the Panama Canal (In-Person & Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a fascinating Wilton Reads presentation\, “Making the Dirt Fly: Building the Panama Canal\,” on May 1\, when Eric Ward from the Linda Hall Library of Science\, Engineering & Technology\, will discuss the massive construction project of excavating 238\,845\,587 cubic yards of material\, damning the Chagres River\, dealing with devastating landslides\, and building six massive two-channel locks. He will also explore current issues facing the Canal due to changing climate. \nDesignated as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World and a Monument of the Millennium” by the American Society of Civil Engineers\, the Panama Canal\, which opened on August 15\, 1914\, shortened the distance for ocean-going freight and passengers traveling between the U.S. east and west coasts by over 8\,000 miles. \nWard is Vice President for Public Programs at the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where he has curated exhibitions on topics ranging from the science of CSI and natural disasters to a history of bird field guides\, the Panama Canal\, and the science of Project Apollo. Ward’s exhibition on the Panama Canal\, titled The Land Divided\, The World United\, featured material from the Library’s A.B. Nichols Collection. Nichols\, Office Engineer during the Canal’s construction\, amassed a collection of photographs\, blueprints and schematics\, maps\, letters\, drawings\, and other items throughout his 10-year tenure at the Canal. \nWard will conduct his presentation via Zoom from his library office in Kansas City\, Missouri. DESCRIPTION:Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life but many myths still abound. Wilton Library welcomes Dr. Siobhan Dolan and Dr. Carol Fucigna\, leaders of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stamford Hospital and lifelong advocates for women’s health. They will present an overview of the many health issues women may face as they move through menopause. Using data and best practices from the North American Menopause Society (NAMS)\, Dr. Dolan and Dr. Fucigna will present the facts and dispel the myths. They will also encourage an open conversation about this important topic. \nDolan\, MD\, MPH\, MBA\, is Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stamford Health. Board-certified in obstetrics\, gynecology\, and clinical genetics\, Dr. Dolan received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Notably\, she is building an innovative program at Stamford Health by integrating genetics and genomics into all aspects of care to provide truly personalized medicine. \nDr. Fucigna is a physician with a 20-year career in obstetrics and gynecology. Her practice encompasses all aspects of obstetric and gynecologic care from adolescents to post-menopausal women. She especially has an interest in managing peri-menopause and helping women through the menopausal transition. Dr. Fucigna is the Vice Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stamford Hospital and an Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University. \nRegistration is recommended.
