SUMMARY:Turf to Tap: How Your Lawn Impacts Your Drinking Water
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for an interesting talk by the Norwalk River Watershed Association’s Jayme Soyak. \nOver 50 million acres of land in the continental US has some form of lawn on it. Unfortunately\, lawns provide little to no habitat for pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife. Lawns are often treated with fertilizers and pesticides and toxins from pesticides which end up in our wetlands\, rivers\, and the Sound\, and their root systems are too shallow to effectively filter storm water runoff. \nNeighborhoods around Wilton are starting to rethink their lawns. The Norwalk River Watershed held three landowner forums throughout the summer\, facilitating discussions around lawn to meadow conversion\, dam removal and riparian buffers\, and No Mow May and pollinator habitats. Join the Norwalk River Watershed Association for a culmination of these three events\, highlighting the impacts of lawn management in the Comstock Brook Watershed. \nRegistration required. Please register online or call 203-762-6334. Email for more information. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Sustainability in Fashion - Curating an Ethically Conscious Closet
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library and Wilton Go Green for a panel discussion of Sustainability in Fashion. Did you know that Americans throw away nearly 11.3 million tons of textile waste each year? That equates to roughly 2\,150 pieces of clothing per second. Synthetic fabrics used in fast fashion account for one-fifth of all the plastic produced globally\, exposing us to forever chemicals and filling the oceans with microplastics. The average American only wears a garment 7-10 times before throwing it away. Only a very small percentage of discarded clothing is re-used or recycled. Come explore the effects of fast fashion on the environment and vulnerable populations on a global scale. There are ways each of us can shop smarter\, lengthen the life of our clothes and commit to brands who put the welfare of their employees and the planet first. Attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to win a private shopping party with 9 friends at the Turnover Shop! Style and shopping support as well as light snacks and refreshments provided. \nOur panel discussion includes Sandra Finkelstein\, Grace Lanning\, Sharon Sobel and Savonna Bocchino. \nSandra Finkelstein\, Creative and Strategic Fashion Brand Leader\, has deep expertise in the women’s\, men’s and kids apparel industry\, with over 35 years of successfully building powerful brand concepts. Grace Lanning\, Denim and Childrenswear Designer\, has over 15 years of experience in fashion design and has worked for companies such as Chaps Ralph Lauren\, Oshkosh B’Gosh and Kal Rieman. Sharon Sobel\, President of the Turnover Shop of Wilton Inc.\, has lived in Wilton for 38 years and has been President since 1991. Savona Bocchino is a junior at Wilton High School where she leads the WHS Green Team. Her interest in fashion and dedication to sustainability motivated her to launch her own Poshmark account in 9th grade aimed at reducing consumption. \nPlease register online or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Naturescape Your Yard with Karen Bussolini (Zoom & In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library is excited to present gardener extraordinaire Karen Bussolini in the live Zoom program\, “Naturescape Your Yard\,” on Thursday\, May 30\, at 6:30 p.m. This is a hybrid program: watch with others in the Rimer Room\, or remotely on Zoom. \nNaturescaping is landscaping with nature — attracting and sustaining wildlife\, using native and and well-adapted plants\, using resources wisely\, and avoiding environmental pollution. But it also means landscaping like nature. Nobody plants\, waters or fertilizes the forest or the prairie\, yet they survive\, beautifully\, on their own. Naturescaping\, or ecological landscaping\, creates self-sustaining landscapes that function like nature. \nBussolini will show how to create environment-friendly landscapes that work with nature to reduce maintenance and costs while increasing beauty and enjoyment. She will show inspiring examples of gardens from across the country that conserve resources — time and money as well as natural resources. They also foster diversity\, sustain wildlife\, provide food and incorporate environmentally sound practices to create sustainable yards. \n“Naturescape Your Yard” is informed by the work of notable ecologists and ecological designers. It also stems from a deep understanding that everything comes from and goes somewhere. It is all connected. The presentation includes big-picture ecological thinking as well as nitty-gritty how-to tips. Additionally\, the images of sustainable yards and gardens presented serve the needs of the people who use them\, look attractive\, and function as small ecosystems. \nBussolini has been a gardener all her life. She trained as a painter and was an architectural photographer earlier on. Her specialization is now in garden photography\, writing\, speaking and eco-friendly garden coaching/design. She is additionally a Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) accredited Organic Land Care Professional. Among others\, Anne Raver’s feature\, “A Connecticut Hillside of Feisty Beauties” in The New York Times spotlights Bussolini’s garden. \nRegistration for this program is required. Please register online at www.wiltonlibrary.org\, or call (203) 762-6334.
