SUMMARY:Sustainability in Fashion - Curating an Ethically Conscious Closet
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library and Wilton Go Green for a panel discussion of Sustainability in Fashion. Did you know that Americans throw away nearly 11.3 million tons of textile waste each year? That equates to roughly 2\,150 pieces of clothing per second. Synthetic fabrics used in fast fashion account for one-fifth of all the plastic produced globally\, exposing us to forever chemicals and filling the oceans with microplastics. The average American only wears a garment 7-10 times before throwing it away. Only a very small percentage of discarded clothing is re-used or recycled. Come explore the effects of fast fashion on the environment and vulnerable populations on a global scale. There are ways each of us can shop smarter\, lengthen the life of our clothes and commit to brands who put the welfare of their employees and the planet first. Attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to win a private shopping party with 9 friends at the Turnover Shop! Style and shopping support as well as light snacks and refreshments provided. \nOur panel discussion includes Sandra Finkelstein\, Grace Lanning\, Sharon Sobel and Savonna Bocchino.  \nSandra Finkelstein\, Creative and Strategic Fashion Brand Leader\, has deep expertise in the women’s\, men’s and kids apparel industry\, with over 35 years of successfully building powerful brand concepts. Grace Lanning\, Denim and Childrenswear Designer\, has over 15 years of experience in fashion design and has worked for companies such as Chaps Ralph Lauren\, Oshkosh B’Gosh and Kal Rieman. Sharon Sobel\, President of the Turnover Shop of Wilton Inc.\, has lived in Wilton for 38 years and has been President since 1991. Savona Bocchino is a junior at Wilton High School where she leads the WHS Green Team. SUMMARY:From Thought to Thread: Costume Designing for TV and Film
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a unique opportunity for an insider’s look at costume designing for television and film. Learn about Judith Gellman’s career—how she got there from an early start in the fashion industry in NY to Chicago\, Toronto and eventually L.A.—and then about how a costume designer works with producers\, directors and actors\, as well as others behind the scenes. Gellman uses her own experiences to talk about what goes into being a successful costume designer in films and TV. \nJudith Gellman is a Costume Designer in the entertainment industry who has worked on over 100 hours of television and film. She has designed for stars including Carol Burnett\, Elizabeth Taylor\, Peter O’Toole\, Bill Murray\, Mary Tyler Moore\, and Lily Tomlin among many others. Judith received her first of four submissions for an Emmy Award for her period design work on a Children’s After School Special for ABC. Some of the theatrical films she designed were Meatballs\, Head Office\, Adventures in Babysitting\, Getting Away with Murder\, Firehouse Dog and Ideal Home. She designed for TV series including Super Fun Night starring Rebel Wilson\, Bad Judge starring Kate Walsh and American Woman with Alicia Silverstone. \nRegistration is suggested. SUMMARY:Victorian "Get Ready With Me": A 19th Century Fashion Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Modern fashion influencers invite viewers to “get ready with me” — an opportunity for an inside look at their wardrobe choices and styling for days at the office\, Sunday brunch\, dinner dates and more. While no social media existed in the late 19th century\, people considered a balance of form\, function and social expectations when putting together an outfit. \nOn Saturday\, Apr. 19\, at 2 p.m.\, join the Wilton Historical Society for a lecture from historical costume designer and fashion historian Jessica Bolduc as they discuss what it took for someone in the Victorian era to get dressed and ready for the day. The lecture will cover the evolving nature of fashion throughout the second half of the 1800s using examples from the Wilton Historical Society’s museum collection as well as recreations from Bolduc. \nFunding for this program is provided by the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \nThe lecture will be held at the Wilton Historical Society. Registration is required\, and the cost to attend is $10 per person for non-members and free for Wilton Historical Society Members.
