SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Dave Brubeck's Time Out- A Conversation Between Stephen Crist and Gil Harel
DESCRIPTION:To continue the celebration of the recent ribbon-cutting for The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library – and celebrate Dave Brubeck‘s birthday! – please join the library online for an engaging conversation between author and music historian Stephen Crist and musicologist Gil Harel. On Thursday\, Dec. 6 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm they will discuss Dave Brubeck’s iconic album “Time Out” as well as Brubeck’s music and life. Professor Crist of Emory University literally “wrote the book” on this album and he sat down for a discussion with Gil Harel from Naugatuck Valley Community College. \nTheir discussion was recorded in October in the library’s new archive room in conjunction with the ribbon-cutting for The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library. A recording of the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be broadcast as an introduction to the program starting at 6:30 pm with the Crist and Harel program beginning around 7 pm. \nStephen A. Crist is Chair of the Music Department at Emory University where he is also Professor of Music History. He works largely in European music of the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries\, with additional interests in hymnody and jazz. His most recent book is Dave Brubeck’s Time Out (Oxford University Press\, 2019). Professor Crist received his Ph.D. (music history) from Brandeis University\, after an M.M. (music theory) from the University of South Florida\, and a B.A. (English and American literature and language) from Harvard University. \nGil Harel\, Associate Professor of Music at Naugatuck Valley Community College\, is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from renaissance madrigals to modal jazz of the 1960s. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching.” At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, and renaissance madrigal choir. He also teaches music history\, music theory\, ear training\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nOnline registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link.

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads — Gil Harel Reprise: Charles Ives and the American Music Identity (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an encore broadcast of Dr. Gil Harel‘s presentation on Danbury-born composer Charles Ives. He will discuss Ives as a founder of a distinctly American music idiom. We will follow his presentation with a live Q&A with Harel. \nCharles Ives may very well be considered one of the most important American composers of the modern period. As an artist\, he had two distinct advantages in his career: an unconventional education with something of a maverick pedagogue (his father\, George Ives); and a vocation that provided him with security and\, later on\, considerable wealth. This latter point is often emphasized by historians who cite it as a factor that allowed the composer to write abstract and complex works without having to worry about concert ticket sales. During the latter part of his life\, Ives’ genius began to bring him recognition. Now\, he is regarded as a seminal American composer whose pioneering work with polytonality\, polyrhythm\, tone clusters\, aleatory elements and more has cemented his place in the canon. \nHarel is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he teaches music history and theory at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Online registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Davis' Kind of Blue
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the first program of a new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959. The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/19/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nThe year 1959 might be described as no less than a seismic year for jazz. Indeed\, this relatively short stretch bore witness to the release of many iconic\, innovative\, and forward-looking albums. Celebrated figures including Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Dave Brubeck\, Charles Mingus\, Ornette Coleman\, and more wrote and performed at this time. During this introductory lecture\, Dr. Harel considers one of the albums recorded in the spring of that year: Kind of Blue. Featuring songs such as “So What” and “Blue in Green\,” this record is remembered both for the novel writing as well as the individual contributions of musicians including Davis\, Coltrane\, Bill Evans\, and others. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College\, where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching”. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he has been presented with the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. In 2020\, he was honored with the coveted Connecticut Board of Regents (BOR) Teaching Award. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegistration is strongly recommended online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Brubeck's Time Out
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the second program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on 1959’s seminal jazz albums. The series runs as follows: \n• March 20: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n• April 10: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n• May 22: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n• June 19: Post-1959 Impact and Aftermath \nAmong the jazz albums of 1959\, Time Out\, recorded by the Brubeck Quartet at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City\, contains some of the most unusual innovations. Fresh off a State Department-sponsored trip abroad\, the quartet recorded a litany of songs featuring unusual rhythmic and metrical features. Despite the unusual nature of the rhythms that suffuse the album\, it still quickly gained popularity. It rose to No. 2 on the Billboard pop albums chart\, while its signature single\, “Take Five” became the first jazz single to sell 1 million copies. During this program\, Professor Harel will discuss the album’s genesis\, the extraordinary musical features\, and its place in 1959 and beyond. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interested in styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he was presented with the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Coltrane's Giant Steps
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the third program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959.The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nThe year 1959 was an exceptionally busy year for John Coltrane. Indeed\, the iconic saxophone player and composer was featured prominently on Kind of Blue (the style of that record — modal jazz — would be one that Coltrane would revisit in subsequent years). Later in the year\, he recorded an album that would become one of the most influential in the genre: Giant Steps. The name of the album proved apropos. The unprecedented chord progressions and improvisational patterns leap rose Coltrane’s status to that of a legend. Even today\, multiple tracks on the record remain standard practice templates for aspiring saxophone players. Join Professor Harel in diving into this massively influential album’s history and score. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he received the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. SUMMARY:Jazz Post-1959: Diverging Paths
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the final program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959. The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nJazz historians and scholars often point to 1959 as a watershed year. Indeed\, the volume and breadth of the music created in that single year has perhaps few analogues in jazz — or any other genre\, for that matter. During this program\, Professor Harel will therefore consider the critical and artistic impact of the seminal albums of 1959. In doing so\, he also discusses the trajectories pursued by the artists who made the year so special. Subsequently\, three distinct and markedly divergent directions can be analyzed. This discussion will consider them through the important works of three celebrated musicians: John Coltrane\, Miles Davis\, and Dave Brubeck. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel additionally conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegister online or call 203.762.6334.
