SUMMARY:Wilton Library: The Long and Short of Healthcare in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for myths\, misconceptions\, and uncomfortable truths about the way the U.S. Healthcare system does (and doesn’t) work – and what you can do about it. \nThis program is intended for mature and immature audiences and everyone in-between. The U.S. healthcare system is complex\, confusing\, and sometimes dysfunctional in ways that can be scary and dangerous to those whom it is supposed to serve. It often seems as if consumers are the last to be considered when it comes to how healthcare is delivered and paid for. The Wilton Library’s mission is to provide a framework for understanding why the system is the way it is and advice about how to deal effectively with it in a way that entertains as well as informs. \nMike Boswood – the ‘long’ of it – is former CEO of Truven Health Analytics\, Thomson Reuters Healthcare & Science\, Joint MD of Elsevier Science. Joe Magnano – the ‘short’ of it – is former Global Head Legal M&A\, Finance and Investments at Zurich Insurance Group. The speakers have decades of experience in understanding and explaining complicated business issues and are well versed in the intricacies of the healthcare and insurance industries. Their talk is intended for those who have experienced the challenges of grappling with healthcare in the U.S. and also for those who have yet to do so. Online registration is required.

SUMMARY:Reshaping Reality: Middle Schoolers in the Mirror
DESCRIPTION:The Reshaping Reality Club at Wilton High School\, in collaboration with Eating Disorder Coach Oriana Laflamme\, invite you to “Middle Schoolers in the Mirror”\, a program at Wilton Library aimed at educating middle school students about the challenges surrounding body image\, eating disorders\, and other related issues. During these sessions\, students will gain insight into the issues they may encounter\, learn how they can support their friends and themselves\, and receive guidance from high school students who have faced similar experiences. \nWith Laflamme’s expertise and the collective knowledge of the Reshaping Reality Club\, the goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for middle school students to learn\, grow\, and develop healthy relationships with their bodies and selves. \nRegistration is required for this two-part program and is open for students in Grades 6-8. Through interactive activities\, discussions\, videos\, and body image exercises\, the program aims to break down the misconceptions and stigma surrounding these harmful behaviors. \nMiddle school is a critical time when students begin to face increased social pressure around their appearance. This can result in self-esteem problems\, eating disorders\, and other damaging health behaviors. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:How to Declutter and Organize with the KonMari Method
DESCRIPTION:Certified Platinum KonMari Consultant Christine Thorn offers an informative and entertaining presentation at Wilton Library about the lifestyle benefits of the KonMari Method of tidying and decluttering. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Deborah Kasdan - "Roll Back the World: A Sister's Memoir"
DESCRIPTION:When Deborah Kasdan’s sister returns from a gap year in Israel she seems to glow with health and beauty. Three years later she is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Roll Back the World is a heartbreaking story of love\, grief\, and guilt — and a testament to the enduring bonds of siblings in the face of ineffective psychiatric treatment spanning decades. \nIn clear and vivid prose\, and with the help of Rachel’s letters and poetry\, Kasdan provides a poignant look at a mid-century Jewish family under strain; offers a moving account of Rachel’s indomitable spirit; and explores family history from the WWII years and the Cold War\, trying to make sense of what happened. \nAs the years pass\, Kasdan focuses on her own family and career but constantly feels shadowed by a sense of guilt\, which is compounded when she and her other two siblings make a bold attempt to help Rachel—a plan that fails. Only after a mental health worker asks Rachel to write a poem does she finally gain her freedom. To Kasdan’s great joy\, Rachel finds acceptance\, despite her disabilities\, in a compassionate community\, including a synagogue where she returns to the religion of her youth. \nKasdan will be in conversation with professional book discussion leader Susan Boyar. \nWhen Kasdan retired from a thirty-five-year career writing about business and technology\, she joined Westport Writers Workshop to make her personal stories come alive. She has served on the board of directors of an intergenerational housing organization and the National Organization on Mental Illness (NAMI) for Southwest CT. She lives in Norwalk. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThis event is co-sponsored by NAMI Southwest CT. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton.
