DESCRIPTION:American Legion Post 86 will have a short film about D-Day\, then have a short quiz–with a very nice prize for correct answers–as well as a question and answer session. We have two programs\, one at 10 a.m. and one at 1 p.m.. Everyone will receive a couple of favors at the door as well.

SUMMARY:American Legion Post 86 Flag Retirement Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:We will be properly disposing of American flags that are no longer suitable for display. Local Scouts–Boy and Girl–and members of the DAR will be participating as well. The ceremony lasts about an hour\, after which we will read the Legion’s National Charter\, celebrating our 100th birthday on Sept. 16. Following this\, we will host a picnic for all attendees and their families.

SUMMARY:Movie Screening & Discussion:  "The Hello Girls" Documentary
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.\, the Wilton League of Women Voters\, the Wilton Library\, the Wilton Historical Society\, and the James B. Whipple American Legion Post 86 will all co-sponsor a movie screening and panel discussion on of the documentary film The Hello Girls. This film tells the story of the 223 women sent to France in 1918 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to work on the war effort as telephone operators. After a 60-year effort\, with the help of Senator Barry Goldwater and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs\, they finally won recognition in 1977. \nThe event is part of Wilton’s town-wide Centennial Celebrations of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment. Panelists joining for the discussion following the screening include Ret. Captain Doris Lippman\, EdD\, US Army\, Vietnam Veteran\, and recipient of the Honorary Order of the Purple Heart; Dr. Amy Pettigrew\, granddaughter of “Hello Girl” Ellen Turner and former Dean\, Dade College School of Nursing and Xavier University School of Nursing; and Dr. Darla Shaw\, Professor Emeritus\, at Western Connecticut State University\, and beloved actor/depictor of Women in History. \nRegistration is strongly urged\, and can be done online or call 203.762.6334. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 17\, 2021\, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.\, come “Get Colonial” with DAR! You may see DAR members around town in colonial dress handing out flags. Feel free to put on your colonial dress to support our revolutionary patriots! Wilton Garden Club will be celebrating Daffodil Festival and we have partnered with them\, so you might see us around the Wilton Historical Society dressed up as well! Wilton Library will display books on patriots\, as well as books on the Battles of Lexington and Concord. \nPatriots’ Day\, the third Monday in the Month of April commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, also known as the “shots heard round the world.” Massachusetts observes Patriots’ Day with the running of the Boston Marathon. Other states observing Patriots’ Day include Maine\, Wisconsin\, Connecticut (2018)\, North Dakota (2019)\, and Florida. As America leads up to her 250th birthday in 2026\, Drum Hill DAR is launching a Patriots’ Day Initiative. We have many fun and some solemn activities planned. We hope you will join us!
