SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Edward Hirsch (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Edward Hirsch. A reading packet will be emailed in advance of the program. There is no charge for the program\, but advance registration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website in order to receive the Zoom session invitation link and reading packet.  For more information\, email Michael Bellacosa. \nThe novelist Jhumpa Lahiri pointedly says of Edward Hirsch’s poetic voice that it is “intimate but restrained\, tender without being sentimental\,” and that he “witnesses life without flinching.” Experience these qualities as you read his poems. He said of his own poems that he had “the true voice of feeling.” His long poem about the death of his son Gabriel\, published in 2014\, is considered “a masterpiece of sorrow.” Hirsch won many awards\, and as a critic for The Washington Post\, he reached out to poets and to those unfamiliar with poetry in a regular column on poetry and poets. \nJanet Krauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery and Through the Trees of Autumn\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University.

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Carl Phillips (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Zoom as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Carl Phillips. Links to the poems will be emailed in advance of the program. \nIt has been said that Carl Phillips’ vision is “a somber\, autumnal landscape\, one that is illuminated by moments of ephemeral\, ethereal beauty.” Ephemeral\, yes\, but fixed in print as gifts to his readers. Phillips can state an opinion and then follow it with a stunning metaphor to illustrate his abstract comment. He tells\, then shows. We will see all all this happen in the poems we will discuss. Phillips\, the Pulitzer Prize winner of Poetry for 2023\, was born in 1959 in Everett\, Washington. He is Professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis where he teaches creative writing. In addition to the Pulitzer\, he has won many other awards. In 1990 he accepted his identity as a gay man. He said “he rediscovered his poetic voice.” \nKrauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery and Through the Trees of Autumn\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. \nTo register\, visit the Wilton Library website. \n

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of A. R. Ammons (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by A.R. Ammons. Links to the poems will be emailed in advance of the program. \nThe spirit of Nature runs through Ammons’ soul. That is the Transcendental belief. A critic said that Ammons adheres “to a fidelity to details of nature” as he writes in a “contemporary conventional style.” He sees his identity as a “part of a larger continuum.” \nThe poet was born in 1920 and died in 2001. He was born in rural North Carolina on a cotton and tobacco farm during the Great Depression. His farm life inspired his poems. He taught at Cornell from 1964-1998\, won numerous poetry awards\, and the prestigious Bollingen Prize for American Poetry. \nWe will trace the Transcendental influence of Emerson and Dickinson in his poems. \nJanet Krauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery and Through the Trees of Autumn\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. \nAdvance registration is required. SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Ruth Stone (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library online with Janet Krauss leading a discussion of a selection of Ruth Stone’s poems. Links to the poems and discussion questions will be emailed in advance of the program. \nAs quoted in Poetry Foundation\, “Ruth Stone’s lyrics are known for their accuracy\, strangeness\, and ability to speak to domestic concerns and metaphysical problems at once.” Her poems clearly flow forth from the pain\, loss\, and poverty she endured. \nStone’s husband\, poet Walter Stone\, committed suicide and left her with their three young children. “Shock and grief of her loss infused her poetry the rest of her life.” \nStone lived in a rural farmhouse in Vermont for much of her life. Her granddaughter Bianca subsequently established Stone’s simple\, farmhouse home as a poet’s residence after her death. During her later years\, Stone received wide recognition with the publication of her book of poems Ordinary Words (1999). Several more acclaimed books followed. She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and secured a professorship of English in 1990 at SUNY Binghamton\, receiving numerous prestigious awards. \nWriting poems was a saving grace for Stone. When inspired\, she indeed expressed that she “felt a poem coming like a horse galloping towards her and had to catch it – if not….” \nExplore the ideas above in the beginning of an introduction to Stone. \nKrauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery\, Yuganta Press\, and Through the Trees of Autumn\, Spartina Press\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. \nThere is no charge for this program. SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of John Lee Clark (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library online when Janet Krauss will lead a discussion of a selection of poems by John Lee Clark. Those registered will receive links to the poems and discussion questions in advance of the program. \nLee Clark brings awareness to what it’s like to “see” the world through his gift as a DeafBlind poet. He is an active spokesperson for his community. Working for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development as a Braille and Proctactile Instructor\, he advocates for jobs for disabled people. Lee Clark has a happy family life with his wife and three sons. \nAs a promoter of Protactile Language\, he reminds one of how Helen Keller was taught to learn words by touch — feel the water running through her fingers in order to know the word water. Protactile Language is the opposite of Sign Language. The former is rooted in contact space as it is explained. John says\, “We feel language! Areas of the body are touched to express our feelings.” Participants will explore his experiences through his poems. \nNo charge for this program. Advance registration is required. Register online to receive the Zoom session invitation link\, and readings packet. Email Caryn Friedman-Quinn with any questions.
