SUMMARY:Jimu Robotics for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Using this Lego-style kit\, kids entering grades 5 – 6 can build their own robot and learn the basics of drag-and-drop programming to control the robot’s actions in this online four-day workshop. The program is from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m from Monday\, July 20 to Thursday\, July 24. \nAfter learning how to program the robot\, students will use sensors to complete programming exercises such as avoiding crashes\, or detecting items and using servos/motors to collect them. Once the program is over\, students can continue to independently create and explore other designs with their kits. \nStudents will need a device to participate in a Zoom call\, as well as another iOS or Android device with the “Jimu” app installed (preferably a tablet). \nThis class is taught by Wilton High School graduates Rishabh Raniwala and Navod Jayawardhane. \nRegistration required; must be able to attend all four days. Visit the library’s website to register. Students must purchase their own Jimu Robot kit to participate. The direct link will be sent with registration. The Zoom link will be sent the morning of the program. Call for details (203) 762-6336 or email for details.

SUMMARY:Unplug and Re-connect: How to Promote Digital Wellness and Increase Family Connections
DESCRIPTION:Social media’s impact on childrens’ mental health has been in the news a lot lately. Too much tech can be harmful\, but sometimes finding the right balance in the home is a struggle. Wilton Youth Council is pleased to bring Claudia Erickson\, BSW MPH and Unplugged Collaborative Co-Founder\, to deliver the keynote address for this year’s Mental Health Action Month. \nJoin Erickson at Wilton Library to learn more about the current technology landscape and what kids want their families to know about their relationship with social media. Furthermore\, discuss the greatest tech concerns of the time. Using the latest research\, Erickson will also provide practical\, creative ideas on how to encourage healthier digital habits in families. She will describe finding greater tech-life balance in a distracted world! \nErickson has over 20 years’ experience working in maternal child health for businesses such as San Diego State University\, Scripps\, Children’s Hospital\, and more. She notably founded Unplugged Village\, a digital wellness company that helps people spend less time with technology. The focus is instead on spending more time increasing authentic human connection and community. \nSponsored by Wilton Youth Council\, Wilton Library\, Middlebrook PTA\, Thrive with a Guide\, Wilton High School PTSA and Wilton SEPTA. \nRegistration is recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334.
