SUMMARY:LECTURE: The Movement was a Great “Mosaic”–CT Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Dr. Kelly Marino\, presented by the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society \nWith 2020 marking the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society have partnered to present a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino. “The Movement was a Great ‘Mosaic’: Connecticut Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign” will take place on Saturday\, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.. \nWell-known suffragist and later Ridgefield\, CT resident Alice Paul once commented that she always felt that the women’s movement was a sort of “mosaic”. Each person “puts in one little stone” and makes a unique contribution important to fueling the larger effort. \nMarino’s presentation explores the history of the suffrage movement in Connecticut by highlighting the stories of several key women who contributed to the campaign in different ways. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States. \nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDr. Kelly Marino is a historian of 20th century America with a focus on women’s history and the history of sexuality. A native of Connecticut\, she is passionate about state and local history. She received her BSED and CT Teacher’s Certification from CCSU in 2008 and MA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst in 2010. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. Dr. Marino teaches courses on United States history and surveys of western civilization.

SUMMARY:Student Essay Contest: Dear Madam Vice President
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters\, the Wilton Historical Society\, the American Legion\, and GOOD Morning Wilton are excited to partner on a new essay contest for students in grades 3-5. \nThis year\, the essay theme will honor an inspiring historic event: the election of our nation’s first woman as Vice President of the United States. It celebrates the one-hundredth anniversary of women achieving the right to vote — an achievement in which several of Wilton’s own luminaries played important roles. As well\, we celebrate Vice President Harris’ other “firsts” — the first woman\, the first person of color\, and the first Asian-American to hold the role. \nAll students in grades 3-5 attending public and private schools in Wilton are invited to submit essays of a minimum of 50 or no more than 250 words in the form of a letter to Dear Madam Vice President\, sharing their stories\, advice\, and wishes. Essay letters will be judged anonymously on content\, creativity\, grammar\, and structure by a panel. First and second place and Honorable Mention winners will be honored and receive their awards at the Wilton League of Women Voters closing meeting in June. Winning letters will also be published by GOOD Morning Wilton. \nStudents may email submissions by Wednesday\, April 14th. Submissions must also include name\, school\, grade\, phone number\, and address.

SUMMARY:How Wilton Works: Meet Our Incoming First Selectman
DESCRIPTION:Although Wilton voters will not head to the polls until the first Tuesday in November\, we already know who will be serving as our next First Selectman as that race is uncontested. If you haven’t already met Toni Boucher\, please join Wilton Library and the Wilton League of Women Voters to meet her on Wednesday\, November 8 (the day after the election) in the Brubeck Room at 7:00 p.m. And even if you’ve known her for years\, please join us to learn what’s in store for Wilton in this community program where “The Incoming” can discuss major Issues facing Wilton in the coming year. \nAntoinetta “Toni” Boucher was born in Italy and came to the United States at age five. She has previously served Wilton constituents in a number of roles\, including both the Board of Education and the Board of Selectmen. Thereafter from 1996 to 2008 she served as state representative for the 143rd District\, and then as the 26th District’s state senator from 2008 to 2018. She has also worked extensively in the non-profit sector\, including as a former director at Commonfund\, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit asset management companies. \nBoucher will return to serving the Town of Wilton as First Selectman this December and hope you can join what is sure to be a good discussion. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. \nRegister on the Wilton Library website. \nThe program is free and open to the public. Co-sponsored by Wilton Library and the Wilton League of Women Voters.

SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book. \nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration is requested online.
