SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play — POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until Sunday\, May 7\, 2023. \nPlease join Wilton Library on Thursday night\, Sept. 1 for the first Hot & Cool Jazz concert since January 2020\, featuring Triple Play\, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, guitar\, jaw harp\, percussion & vocals)\, Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals)\, and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals). Collectively they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz and classical music they perform. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nAdvance registration is strongly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Suggested donation is $10. Each registration is for one name only; register each member of a party separately. Pre-registrants should arrive by 6:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 6:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nTriple Play’s musical roots go way back (50-plus years) in each member’s history. Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group “New Heavenly Blue” (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, “Sky King” (on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. Paul deBarros\, writer for The Seattle Times and Downbeat\, commented after seeing a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival: “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm\, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” \nDave Brubeck’s last recorded performance was captured on the exciting “Triple Play Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center.” The crowd is wildly enthusiastic on this well-reviewed CD\, which also featured Joel Brown’s father\, Frank Brown on clarinet. You can often hear this innovative version of “Take Five” featuring Ruth’s polyrhythmic jaw harp and burning solos by Dave\, Joel and Chris on Sirius XM Jazz. Triple Play’s music has international reach\, as they were a hit playing with The Singapore Chinese Orchestra and returned for a second performance\, which was recorded and released on Blue Forest Records. “It all fits together because of the talent and taste of the musicians\, who groove no matter what they’re doing — and it’s tremendous fun\, to boot\,” said All About Jazz.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: The Jerry Bergonzi Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for the Jerry Bergonzi Quartet featuring Jerry Bergonzi on tenor sax\, Harvie S on acoustic bass\, Bruce Barth on piano\, and Jason Tiemann on drums. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nAdvance registration is strongly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. The suggested donation is $10. Each registration is for one name only; register each member of a party separately. Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nBergonzi is a tenor saxophonist\, composer\, author and educator who was introduced to the world of jazz by one its legends — Dave Brubeck. In the 1970s\, he toured with the Two Generations of Brubeck band that featured Dave and the three Brubeck sons: Darius\, Chris\, and Dan. Later in that decade\, he also held the sax chair in the Dave Brubeck Quartet. On the faculty of the New England Conservatory for the last 20 years\, Bergonzi teaches improvisation in ensemble settings as well as one-on-one. He still plays two weekly gigs in the Boston area and tours 130 days a year playing his own music. \nHarvie S is back in the Brubeck Room for his seventh performance — most recently in 2019 with Alan Broadbent. Harvie is an award-winning bassist\, educator\, composer\, arranger\, and producer. He has played with many of the biggest names in jazz [the list is too long to spell out] and has performed in a wide variety of jazz festivals around the globe as well as in such venues as The Blue Note\, The Iridium\, and the Kennedy Center. \nTiemann is a New York City-based jazz drummer who maintains a busy schedule as a freelance performer and educator. Admittedly drawing influence from the greats Philly Joe Jones\, Tony Williams\, Elvin Jones\, and Billy Higgins\, Tiemann is quickly forging his musical voice on the New York scene by fusing his depth of historical foundation with crisp technique and propulsive\, intuitive swing. \nJazz pianist and composer Barth has been sharing his music with listeners the world over for more than two decades. He has performed on over 100 recordings and movie soundtracks. He is equally at home playing solo piano\, leading an all-star septet and composing for a variety of ensembles. He has performed with James Moody\, Art Farmer\, Phil Woods\, Tony Bennett\, Branford Marsalis\, and Wynton Marsalis among many others.

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Songs of Ships & Sailors
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for a unique concert featuring arrangements from Songs of Ships & Sailors\, a songbook written by the Castlebay Singers and published in 2021. The book contains over 160 songs gleaned from the many hundred songs they found in archives at the Maine Folklife center\, the Library of Congress\, the Helen Hartness Collection\, and several others. Lane and Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history\, legend and experience into their personable performances. Rich and exuberant renditions of traditional and original songs are supported with Celtic harp\, 14-string guitar\, fiddle & woodwinds. Castlebay has toured the Eastern US and Canada\, United Kingdom\, Ireland\, and Kosovo. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Sunday\, May 7 at 4:00 p.m. for the next Hot & Cool Jazz concert featuring Triple Play\, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, guitar\, jaw harp\, percussion & vocals)\, Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals)\, and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals). Collectively they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz and classical music they perform. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nWait-list spots only. Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nTriple Play’s musical roots go way back (50+ years!) in each member’s history. Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group “New Heavenly Blue” (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, “Sky King”(on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. \nRegister on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:A Gathering of Celtic at the Holidays
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a holiday concert as Jeff Snow returns to the Brubeck Room for “A Gathering of Celtic at the Holidays.” This program is a mix of The Softer Side of Celtic along with familiar and perhaps not so familiar holiday songs and tunes. Many of you have heard Snow play Celtic music on the Autoharp… and the music of the holidays on the ‘harp is magical. \nGrowing up in a home where the older Scottish folk songs were the everyday sounds\, Snow developed a love for Celtic music. Snow’s music has been described as “quiet and relaxing Celtic.” Much of it is but every once in a while he breaks out and the foot stomping begins. Sharing stories\, songs and tunes enriched by the histories of Scotland\, Ireland and England\, his performances educate as well as entertain. You will see clapping\, singing\, laughing\, lots of smiles and perhaps a few tears. Suitable for all ages. \nRegistration is recommended. Register on the Wilton Library website or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Serendipity Chorale: Celebrating Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a very special celebration of Black History Month. Experience the Serendipity Chorale\, featuring professional baritone Edward Pleasant. The chorale will perform a program of gospel songs and spirituals\, along with songs from the civil rights movement. The group’s leader\, Gigi Van Dyke\, will narrate this music’s role in Black history. In particular\, she will explain how slaves sang spirituals to communicate escape routes to reach the underground railroad. \nVan Dyke has led Serendipity’s group of men and women of diverse backgrounds for 49 years. From all around Fairfield County\, music is their common denominator. The Lt. Governor’s office also honored them as a Connecticut Treasure “for long devotion to spreading smiles and songs throughout southwestern Connecticut.” The chorale even sang with Andy Williams and Pete Seeger and performed at the Levitt Pavilion\, the Westport Playhouse and at the Norwalk Concert Hall. \nCritically acclaimed in opera\, stage\, narration\, recording\, and musical theater\, Pleasant is recognized as one of the most versatile performers of his generation. He chiefly distinguishes himself as an expressive singer and a gifted actor with brilliant comic timing. Additionally\, prominent venues David Geffen (Avery Fisher) Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, the Texas State Capitol and the White House have heard his rich baritone voice. \nRegistration is required\, online or call 203.762.6334.
