Greene\, Ph.D.\, author of The Explosive Child; Lost at School; and Raising Human Beings \nChildren do well when they can; when they can’t\, it is because of lagging skills and unsolved problems. All children have times when they struggle to handle life’s expectations. Whether a child responds by whining\, sulking\, or crying\, or in ways that are more concerning–hitting\, swearing\, or biting–the goal of parents and caregivers is to identify and solve the underlying problems that cause the behavior. \nJoin organizers to learn from child psychologist Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, how to understand children’s challenging episodes\, identify unsolved problems and begin to solve problems. Dr. Greene is the originator of the innovative\, empirically-supported approach to children’s behavioral challenges known as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions. \nIn the 2018-2019 school year\, the Wilton Public Schools will be learning more about Dr. Greene’s model. The district has worked with Dr. Greene to create a plan to help teachers\, faculty\, administration\, staff\, and parents learn how to help students with effective self-regulation and problem-solving strategies. This will begin with keynote addresses for elementary\, middle and high school faculty on Oct. 8\, which is a professional development day for district staff. Teachers across the district have been trained in these practices and RULER tools are already being used with students in grades K-5 to help students recognize and regulate emotions. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, October 16\, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Road). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive\, or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. What is right for my child? Recreational sports? Elite teams and clubs? Should I let my child “quit” a sport that we’ve invested in? Should they specialize? What about college? \nSal Giaimo\, veteran teacher at Miller-Driscoll and director of the “Be a Good Sport” summer program will moderate a thoughtful discussion with Dr. Will Mayer PsyD\, Sports Psychologist\, Liz Archibald\, MPH\, RDN\, Clinical Nutritionist/Nutritional Therapist\, Bobby Rushton\, WPS Athletic Director and others. \nThis event is intended for parents of kids PK-12. DESCRIPTION:The Miller-Driscoll School Carnival is making its return April 26-28! Save the Date and get ready for rides\, food and family fun! \nFriday\, April 26: 6 – 10 p.m.\nSaturday\, April 27: 1 – 10 p.m.\nSunday\, April 28: 1 – 5 p.m. \nIn addition to the fun and entertainment\, local food trucks will also be there\, namely 900 Degrees Pizza\, JJB\, Southern Wings and Things (SWAT)\, Cinnabomb Food Truck\, and College Creamery. Food trucks will open an hour before the carnival starts all 3 days. \nThe carnival is one of the school’s most significant fundraisers. Through ticket sales and local sponsor support\, the carnival raises funds that are used towards student enrichment programs\, educational workshops\, new materials\, and the fulfillment of grant requests. \nUnlimited ride wristbands will be available for purchase on-site for $35. Wristbands are good for one day only and cannot be reused over multiple days.
