SUMMARY:The Cultural and Cinematic Legacy of “The Godfather”
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an entertaining look at the legacy of The Godfather. \nThe Godfather films continue to fascinate audiences. They have become some of the most enduring in the industry and have played a major role in influencing audience perceptions and misperceptions of criminal activities and family life. Greg Blank will examine themes of family\, family values\, the criminal empire of the Corleone family as a metaphor for American capitalism and values\, and the immigrant experience\, and the film’s legacy of phrases that endure in the contemporary popular lexicon (“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”; “keep your friends close\, but your enemies closer”\, etc.). It will also explore the folklore\, legend\, and background stories on the actual making of the film. \nA Long Island-based filmmaker\, film historian\, and lecturer\, Blank has over 15 years of experience as a producer\, director\, cinematographer\, and editor. \nRegistration is required. To register and see more details\, visit the Wilton Library website. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Tom Santopietro - The Way We Were: The Making of a Romantic Classic
DESCRIPTION:The Way We Were: a nostalgia drenched\, bittersweet romance starring superstars Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford at the peaks of their careers\, and a story for everyone who was ever loved with passion\, if not wisely. A smash hit around the world whose power echoes to this day—yet a film whose success was so far from assured that one studio executive was heard to exclaim: “Barbra Streisand doesn’t sing\, and she plays a communist—are you trying to kill me?!” But succeed the film did\, propelled by a smash-hit title song and career defining performances from Streisand and Redford. \nNow\, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the film’s release\, best-selling author Tom Santopietro’s latest book\, The Way We Were: The Making of a Romantic Classic\, provides the definitive inside story behind the challenges\, disputes\, and creative passions of those who fought to make this landmark film. Charting the path from screenwriter Arthur Laurents’ initial inspiration to the fervent talk of a possible sequel\, Santopietro mingles reverence and wry humor to decode the mysterious chemistry between Streisand and Redford that created a romance for the ages. It is filled with humorous anecdotes and fascinating first-hand accounts by actors\, film historians\, and members of the creative team. \nRegistration is required. Register online. For more information\, call 203.762.6350 or email the library’s reference librarians. \nThe media sponsor of Wilton Library’s author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds will go to Wilton Library.

SUMMARY:Women in Film
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Women’s History Month at Wilton Library on Wednesday\, March 8 at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a dynamic look at women in film. \nWomen have always been a force in filmmaking\, but often their talents were suppressed by a male dominated industry. Alice Guy-Blanche was a pioneer filmmaker and has paved the way to opening doors over the decades for filmmakers of the silent era like Lois Weber and Chaplin protege Mabel Norman. But until the rise of feminism in the late 60’s\, female filmmakers’ voices were suppressed until there were directors such as Penny Marshall\, Katheryn Bigelow\, Sofia Coppola\, and others. \nGreg Blank\, a Long Island based filmmaker\, film historian\, and lecturer will examine the dynamics of sexism in the film industry\, the challenges women have met and often overcome\, and the artistic achievements of female directors over the years. \nRegistration is required. Register online. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Orchestrating Change
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Youth Council and Wilton Library invite you to the screening of the documentary film Orchestrating Change.  The film features beautiful music while being informative\, uplifting\, sometimes humorous and most importantly\, empowering.  Orchestrating Change tells the inspiring story of the only orchestra created by and for people living with mental illness and those who support them. \nRonald Braunstein was on the trajectory to becoming one of the world’s leading conductors until he made his diagnosis of bipolar disorder public and was shunned by the classical music community. He decided to create an orchestra for people like him with the mission of erasing mental health stigma one concert at a time. The film follows Braunstein and several of the musicians for two years\, capturing their setbacks and their accomplishments. The musicians’ stories are told entirely in their own words\, augmented with striking animation. The film culminates in a joyous concert at a major venue. It is a triumph for Braunstein\, who thought he might never conduct again. \nSeen across the United States on public television stations\, the film is the 2021 winner of the Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media. The American Library Association & Media Round Table voted it “One of the Top Twelve 2022 Notable Films for Adults.” \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.
