SUMMARY:Music on the Hill Summer Chorus (Rehearsals Start July 10)
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill invites new and returning singers for the 16th annual Summer Chorus\, performing “Frostiana” by Randall Thompson and other American music with guest conductor Kaitlin Lazere. Students welcome! \nThe Summer Chorus\, with 50-60 singers\, is a chance to sing during the summer when other groups do not meet; to sing a longer work or with a larger group; or to return to singing. Students singers may bring their musical parents. All are welcome. \nRehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays starting July 10 and continuing to the concert on Thursday evening\, August 2\, all at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Wilton. \nNo audition; simply register online. Suggested minimum contribution:  $40; $20 for students. Pay online or at the first rehearsal. \nSingers unable to commit to July rehearsals are invited to join in for August Summer Sings on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Each week\, a different piece led by a different conductor — the audience is the chorus! DESCRIPTION:The Music on the Hill Summer Chorus celebrates America in this concert featuring Randall Thompson’s “Frostiana” and other American music led by guest conductor Kaitlin Lazere. \n“Frostiana: Seven Country Songs” is Thompson’s setting of Robert Frost poetry\, including “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The piece was commissioned by the town of Amherst\, Massachusettes for its bicentennial in 1959. \nThe program also includes Aaron Copland’s “The Promise of Living\,” from his Opera The Tender Land\, and works by Barber\, Bernstein\, and contemporary American composer Morten Lauridsen. \nThe concert is free\, a gift to the community\, with donations gratefully accepted. \nThis is the 16th annual Summer Chorus. It draws singers from across the region each July to rehearse and perform a major work from the classical choral repertoire. It is one of Music on the Hill’s four performing ensembles\, along with the Festival Chorus\, Chamber Chorus\, and the Jubilate Ringers handbell choir. All are led by artistic directors David H. SUMMARY:Choral Concert:  Music of the French Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill presents an exquisite choral experience that will include the rarely performed works of French Baroque composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)\, including his “Te Deum\,” “Regina Caeli\,” and “Messe a 8 voix et 8 violons et flutes.” The festival and chamber choruses of Music on the Hill will be joined by organ\, trumpets\, strings and timpani in the acoustically rich and resonant church sanctuary. \nIt will be a special afternoon of music\, inspired by the lovely gardens and buildings of the Palais de Versailles\, where many of these musical gems were composed and/or originally performed in Charpentier’s lifetime. Living at virtually the same time as the Sun King\, Louis XIV (1638-1715)\, Charpentier and his music are representative of a distinctive era in French history\, when absolute monarchy reigned\, and France was widely recognized for its rich\, indulgent and breath-taking culture and arts–many say the greatest in French history.

DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill is inviting choral singers to join us Tuesdays/Thursdays in July to prepare for our Summer Chorus concert on July 25. No auditions are required; rehearsals and performance will be at Wilton’s St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. \nThis is the 17th year we are offering a great choral occasion for people who enjoy singing and whose regular choir/chorus may be taking the summer off. Come meet new people and enjoy a wonderful singing experience\, with strings\, brass and timpani accompaniment. Please register by June 30\, via email. \nWe will be singing Dvorak’s Te Deum and his Mass in D\, which are not frequently performed and yet lovely–he wrote them in anticipation of his move to NYC in the early 1890s. \nThe Summer Chorus of 60-plus voices meets each July to rehearse and perform a major choral-orchestral work. Participants–music professionals and skilled amateurs–include members of church and community choirs\, high school singers\, and those looking for a choral home. The Summer Chorus provides an opportunity for choral singers to perform a major work in summer when most choruses do not meet\, and it gives singers a chance to get to know others from many area towns and choruses. SUMMARY:Summer Choral Concert: Dvorak's Te Deum and Mass in G
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill is pleased to present its 17th Annual Summer Chorus with the choral music of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak on Thursday\, July 25 . Works will be his Te Deum (Op. 103) and the Mass in D Major (Op. 86)\, both written in the 1890s as Dvorak turned his eye towards America and his time here. These treasures are not frequently performed and so provide a special experience for singers and audience alike to explore and celebrate his style and compositions. Strings\, brass and timpani will accompany the full chorus. \nThe concert will be at the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church\, from 8-9:30 p.m. on Thursday July 25. A suggested donation of $20/person is suggested but not required. We welcome all who appreciate gorgeous choral works. \nQuestions? The Summer Chorus provides an opportunity for choral singers to perform a major work in summer when most choruses do not meet\, and it gives singers a chance to get to know others from many area towns and choruses.

DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill invites you to its first concert of the fall season\, performed by the women of the 16-member professional ensemble\, the Chamber Chorus\, and by the handbell ensemble\, Jubilate Ringers. David H. Connell and Ellen Dickinson will direct. \nThe two choral works feature settings of Japanese poetry:  The Winter Cantata of Vincent Persichetti is a sequence of haiku written by the great masters of that poetic form; and the suite Tsukimi (Moon-Viewing) by Peter Gilbert is a setting of eight texts\, taken from 1000-yr old texts\, in which each of the eight singers has a solo role. In addition\, the Jubilate Ringers will premiere “Moonlight on the Lake\,” a suite of Japanese songs arranged for handbells by Dickinson. \nThe acoustics and open natural space in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Church in Westport with its walls of windows and soaring ceiling will add to the experience. DESCRIPTION:Join Music on the Hill for their gorgeous holiday concert\, “Sounds of the Season.” Featured this year will be the Jubilate Ringers\, the Festival Chorus\, and our new Community Children’s Chorus. Our program of festive music includes choral works by contemporary Scandinavian composers Kim André Arnesen and Morten Lauridsen\, as well as “The Heavens Delight” by New Canaan composer Gwyneth Walker. Other selections include gorgeous seasonal pieces such as “Cantate Domino” (Hassler)\, “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree” (Poston)\, “What Sweeter Music Can We Bring?” (Berger) and the French traditional carol “Masters in This Hall.” \nThe bell ringers will perform a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of the plainchant melody Divinium mysterium (“Of the Father’s Love Begotten”)\, and will accompany both children’s and adult choruses for more familiar carols\, including a medley arranged by Dickinson. \nWe will all sing favorite carols with the majestic St. Matthew’s organ as accompaniment. DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill‘s monthly focus classes continue with September’s Fun with Rhythm! Join us for this fun and functional “focus” on rhythm! Learn the basics of rhythm notation and explore advanced rhythms. Listen and echo\, read and play\, and create and notate different beat patterns and rhythms! Discuss rhythm ideas and the use of rhythm and drums throughout the world. No prior music reading experience necessary. Receive a brand-new Remo ten-inch drum with your donation! [Suggested donation: $50] This Focus runs for three Tuesdays\, from 7-8 p.m. starting September 15. \nMusic on the Hill is an independent music organization based in Wilton\, providing focused opportunities for choral musicians and vocalists\, handbell ringers and instrumentalists\, and music-lovers. As an independent entity\, Music on the Hill broadens community-based offerings and provides a fresh educational and artistic approach to choral singing and handbell ringing for ensembles of every size.
