SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Dave Brubeck's Time Out- A Conversation Between Stephen Crist and Gil Harel
DESCRIPTION:To continue the celebration of the recent ribbon-cutting for The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library – and celebrate Dave Brubeck‘s birthday! – please join the library online for an engaging conversation between author and music historian Stephen Crist and musicologist Gil Harel. On Thursday\, Dec. 6 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm they will discuss Dave Brubeck’s iconic album “Time Out” as well as Brubeck’s music and life. Professor Crist of Emory University literally “wrote the book” on this album and he sat down for a discussion with Gil Harel from Naugatuck Valley Community College. \nTheir discussion was recorded in October in the library’s new archive room in conjunction with the ribbon-cutting for The Brubeck Collection at Wilton Library. A recording of the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be broadcast as an introduction to the program starting at 6:30 pm with the Crist and Harel program beginning around 7 pm. \nStephen A. Crist is Chair of the Music Department at Emory University where he is also Professor of Music History. He works largely in European music of the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries\, with additional interests in hymnody and jazz. His most recent book is Dave Brubeck’s Time Out (Oxford University Press\, 2019). Professor Crist received his Ph.D. (music history) from Brandeis University\, after an M.M. (music theory) from the University of South Florida\, and a B.A. (English and American literature and language) from Harvard University. \nGil Harel\, Associate Professor of Music at Naugatuck Valley Community College\, is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from renaissance madrigals to modal jazz of the 1960s. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching.” At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, and renaissance madrigal choir. He also teaches music history\, music theory\, ear training\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nOnline registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Author Talk with Matthew Gabriele and David M. Perry - The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe
DESCRIPTION:The word “medieval” conjures images of the “Dark Ages”—centuries of ignorance\, superstition\, stasis\, savagery\, and poor hygiene. But the myth of darkness obscures the truth; this was a remarkable period in human history. “The Bright Ages” recasts the European Middle Ages for what it was\, capturing this 1\,000-year era in all its complexity and fundamental humanity\, bringing to light both its beauty and its horrors. \n“The Bright Ages” takes us through ten centuries and crisscrosses Europe and the Mediterranean\, Asia and Africa\, revisiting familiar people and events with new light cast upon them. We look with fresh eyes on the Fall of Rome\, Charlemagne\, the Vikings\, the Crusades\, and the Black Death\, but also to the multi-religious experience of Iberia\, the rise of Byzantium\, and the genius of Hildegard and the power of queens. We begin under a blanket of golden stars constructed by an empress with Germanic\, Roman\, Spanish\, Byzantine\, and Christian bloodlines and end nearly 1\,000 years later with the poet Dante—inspired by that same twinkling celestial canopy—writing an epic saga of heaven and hell that endures as a masterpiece of literature today. \nDavid Perry is a freelance journalist covering politics\, history\, education\, and disability rights. Perry’s work appears at CNN\, The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, The Guardian\, Washington Post\, The Nation\, Los Angeles Times\, and many others. Perry was a professor of Medieval History at Dominican University from 2006-2017\, working on Venice\, the Crusades\, and the Mediterranean World. He is the Senior Undergraduate Advisor for the University of Minnesota‘s History department. \nMatthew Gabriele is a Professor of Medieval Studies and Chair of the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech. He completed an Honors BA in history at the University of Delaware and then his M.A. and Ph.D. in medieval history at the University of California\, Berkeley. He was a regular contributor to Forbes.com and his public writing has appeared in such places as the Washington Post\, Time\, The Guardian\, The Daily Beast\, Slate\, and The Roanoke Times. \nOnline registration is required. Registrants must have a Zoom account. A link will be emailed to all registrants a few days before the event. \nModerator Judson Scruton M.A (The Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry) has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator\, Judson has also directed publications\, communications\, public relations\, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and U.K. including the Newberry Library in Chicago. \nGo to the Elm Street Books website to order your copy of “The Bright Ages.” A portion of the proceeds will go to Wilton Library. \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Emily Levesque - The Last Stargazers: The Enduring Story of Astronomy's Vanishing Explorers (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The Last Stargazers is popular science writing for all who are spellbound by the night’s sky. Stargazing is a pursuit that continues to fascinate us: from Copernicus to Carl Sagan\, astronomers throughout history have spent their lives trying to answer the biggest questions in the universe. \nNow\, award-winning astronomer Emily Levesque shares the stories of modern-day stargazers in this new nonfiction release\, the people willing to adventure across high mountaintops and to some of the most remote corners of the planet\, all in the name of science. From the lonely quiet of midnight stargazing to tall tales of wild bears loose in the observatory\, The Last Stargazers is a love letter to astronomy and an affirmation of the crucial role that humans can and must play in the future of scientific discovery. \nEmily Levesque is an astronomy professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. The Last Stargazers is an Amazon Best Book of 2020\, a AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books Finalist\, and a PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award Finalist. SUMMARY:Purposeful Play and Why It's Important for Learning
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library via Zoom for an interactive and informative experience on the importance of play in children’s development and how parents can play more intentionally with their children. The session will run from 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, Jan. 26.  \nThrough play\, children learn how to engage and interact successfully in the world around them. Play is\, in fact\, a critical vehicle through which children achieve healthy developmental milestones. In theory\, playing with our children sounds like it should be easy: there are no rules; there is no script. But\, in reality\, the art of play can be overwhelming and confusing\, especially when the children have not yet developed foundational people-\, play- or group skills. \nIn this session\, Meghan Cave\, BCBA\, co-founder of The Hangout Spot\, LLC\, Connecticut’s first behavior analytic social skills development center\, will outline actionable steps parents can follow to play along with their children\, promoting social success and meaningful learning along the way. \nRegistration required. No charge for the program. This program is co-sponsored by Wilton Library\, SPED*NET\, Wilton Youth Council‘s Free Play Matters Task Force\, and Wilton Public Schools.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Cut the Cord (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:“Cut the Cord” is an entertaining Zoom presentation meant to help cable-TV customers break the expensive and often frustrating cable service cycle. Learn how to get out of a cable service agreement\, find and negotiate the best internet/broadband access deal\, and get started with streaming services for a vast range of entertainment options… many of which are free! \nThis online event will be held on Zoom on Tuesday\, Feb. 15 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. \nThis presentation is led by consumer rights advocate and tech writer James Gifford. The workshop covers the details of streaming equipment (some of which attendees may already own) and how to explore the ever-expanding list of channels and services that streaming—as well as the “forgotten” free resource of broadcast TV—can bring to your living room. Support issues such as quality home WiFi and low-cost home phone service are covered as well. You don’t need advanced technical expertise… just the right information! \nRegistration required. To register\, visit the Wilton library website.

SUMMARY:Writing a Legacy Letter (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Library on Wednesday\, Feb. 23\, from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. on Zoom for a workshop on writing your own legacy letter. \nA legacy letter (also called an “ethical will”) is a written document that allows you to share your life lessons\, express your values and transmit your blessings to future generations. A legacy letter is shorter than a memoir\, typically just a few pages. Writing one is a rewarding experience that creates an enduring gift for family\, friends and other loved ones. \nThis introductory workshop includes discussion and brief writing exercises to help you examine your life history\, explore your values and capture important insights. It offers advice\, encouragement and a model structure to help you draft and complete your own legacy letter. Because this is an interactive workshop\, attendance is limited to 20 attendees. \nJay Sherwin created the Life Reflections Project to educate people about legacy letters and ethical wills; he now teaches classes and workshops on legacy writing and helps people craft their own legacy documents. \nRegistration required. Attendance is limited but a waitlist is available once the session is full. To register and for more information\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:The Modern American Novel with Mark Schenker (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns via Zoom in a continuation of his 2021 lectures on classic novels\, presented by the Wilton Library. \nBeginning on Feb. 24\, the event will run from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. every Thursday except for Mar. 10.  \nHaving discussed the Victorian novel last spring and the modern British novel this past fall\, he turns now to American fiction in the first decades of the 20th century. With reference to masterworks by five acclaimed American authors\, he will consider the changing nature of the novel as an art form\, the rise of modernism\, the influence of the First World War\, and the ways in which American fiction of the period resembles and differs from English novels of the same era. \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week: February 24 – The House of Mirth\, March 3 – Winesburg\, Ohio\, March 17 – This Side of Paradise\, March 24 – In Our Time\, March 31 – The Sound and the Fury. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. Register online or call 203-762-6334. You will automatically be registered for all five sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.
