SUMMARY:How School Interventions Affect Your Kids Who Are Wired Differently
DESCRIPTION:Children with autism\, non-learning verbal disorders (NVLD)\, or ADHD have two things in common: their brains process differently from those of other kids and they are often traumatized in school. \nSchools traditionally focus on kids’ behavior\, instead of on the experiences that led to such behavior. This is especially true if their actions distract other children. However\, children who are not accomplishing work “at the level of their potential” or are “oppositional” or “noncompliant” may be doing the best they can. Negative feedback only discourages them and leads to a sense of frustration and shame. Parents also often feel helpless when trying to get schools to better understand their kids. \nClinical psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, and therapist Robert Bernstein\, MA\, will discuss why it’s critical for schools to focus on “what’s the child experiencing” in order to genuinely understand their behavior and help them succeed. \nRegister online. \nA video recording of this event will also be available online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA

He will address specific strategies to educate friends\, family\, the community\, and the public with a view toward dissolving traditional social stigmas and enhancing the delicate sense of self-esteem that many kids with special needs experience. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Assistive Technology (AT): Many Possibilities to Consider
DESCRIPTION:Assistive Technology (AT) encompasses many possibilities when you look beyond AAC/communication. Wilton Library hosts Alescia Ford\, MS\, OTR/L\, ATP\, while she breaks down the three critical components of educational design: Universal Design for Learning\, Educational Technology\, and Assistive Technology. She also explains what AT looks like (from low-tech\, mid-tech\, to high-tech)\, when more is needed (consultation and evaluations)\, how to include AT in the IEP\, and why implementation planning is so important. \nFord is a certified occupational therapist and a nationally certified assistive technology practitioner. She evaluates students’ needs for AT; trains students\, educators\, and parents on implementation plans; develops district-wide competencies for AT processes; and consults on literacy support programming\, accessibility and Universal Design for Learning guiding principles. She owns Adapt & Learn\, a pediatric therapy service provider with clinic locations in Simsbury and Farmington. \nRegister for this free\, in-person presentation. \n
