SUMMARY:Being on the Same Page - How Parents Can Remain Effective Partners When Raising Kids with Special Needs
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton will host Todd Kellogg\, a licensed family therapist and board-certified behavior analyst\, on Wednesday\, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wilton Library.  Kellogg will discuss how the difficulty of raising kids has increased exponentially along with the challenges of growing up in today’s world. For parents to be successful in guiding their children\, setting expectations\, and enforcing boundaries\, they need to find ways to work together and co-parent in a collaborative manner. \nMeeting the challenges of co-parenting is even more critical when kids have special needs. As parents of kids with special needs know\, everything is magnified and missteps can be that much more problematic for the child’s development. In this discussion\, Kellogg will walk you through best practices of co-parenting\, successful communication patterns\, and how to bounce back after setbacks. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Tom Santopietro - The Way We Were: The Making of a Romantic Classic
DESCRIPTION:The Way We Were: a nostalgia drenched\, bittersweet romance starring superstars Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford at the peaks of their careers\, and a story for everyone who was ever loved with passion\, if not wisely. A smash hit around the world whose power echoes to this day—yet a film whose success was so far from assured that one studio executive was heard to exclaim: “Barbra Streisand doesn’t sing\, and she plays a communist—are you trying to kill me?!” But succeed the film did\, propelled by a smash-hit title song and career defining performances from Streisand and Redford. \nNow\, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the film’s release\, best-selling author Tom Santopietro’s latest book\, The Way We Were: The Making of a Romantic Classic\, provides the definitive inside story behind the challenges\, disputes\, and creative passions of those who fought to make this landmark film. Charting the path from screenwriter Arthur Laurents’ initial inspiration to the fervent talk of a possible sequel\, Santopietro mingles reverence and wry humor to decode the mysterious chemistry between Streisand and Redford that created a romance for the ages. It is filled with humorous anecdotes and fascinating first-hand accounts by actors\, film historians\, and members of the creative team. \nRegistration is required. Register online. For more information\, call 203.762.6350 or email the library’s reference librarians. \nThe media sponsor of Wilton Library’s author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds will go to Wilton Library.

SUMMARY:Women in Film
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Women’s History Month at Wilton Library on Wednesday\, March 8 at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a dynamic look at women in film. \nWomen have always been a force in filmmaking\, but often their talents were suppressed by a male dominated industry. Alice Guy-Blanche was a pioneer filmmaker and has paved the way to opening doors over the decades for filmmakers of the silent era like Lois Weber and Chaplin protege Mabel Norman. But until the rise of feminism in the late 60’s\, female filmmakers’ voices were suppressed until there were directors such as Penny Marshall\, Katheryn Bigelow\, Sofia Coppola\, and others. \nGreg Blank\, a Long Island based filmmaker\, film historian\, and lecturer will examine the dynamics of sexism in the film industry\, the challenges women have met and often overcome\, and the artistic achievements of female directors over the years. \nRegistration is required. Register online. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Rosie McMahan - Fortunate Daughter: A Memoir of Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author Rosie McMahan will visit Wilton Library to talk about her book Fortunate Daughter: A Memoir of Reconciliation. Though the book begins as an all-too-common story of childhood sexual abuse\, it gradually becomes a rare story of how one person heals from that early trauma. In this intimate first-person narrative\, McMahan offers the reader a portrait of misery\, abuse\, and hurt\, followed by the difficult and painful task of healing.  It’s a journey that\, in the end\, reveals the complicated and nuanced venture of true reconciliation and the freedom that comes along with it. Fortunate Daughter: A Memoir of Reconciliation is a first prize winner in the 2021 Chanticleer International Journey Book Awards. \nFirst\, a daughter\, sister\, wife\, and mother\, McMahan identifies as an irreverent and opinionated white cisgendered woman\, who is also a survivor\, a feminist\, writer\, educator\, counselor\, attending Quaker\, community activist\, and avid botanical enthusiast. Her poetry has been published in several journals. She works at MA Mentoring Partnership and owns and operates Optimistic Options\, a private practice rooted in trauma informed care and restorative justice principles. Learn more about her book and listen to her podcast at Heart2Heart. \nApril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The media sponsor of Wilton Library author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website. \n

SUMMARY:Shakespeare on the Sound: As You Like It
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special program just in time for Shakespeare on the Sound‘s annual summer production of As You Like It in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park\, June 14 through July 2. It’s their 27th year presenting Shakespeare’s plays outdoors. \n“Do you not know I am a woman? When I think I must speak.” \nFun Fact: In Shakespeare’s romantic comedy As You Like It\, the heroine Rosalind has more lines than any other female character in all of Shakespeare: more lines than Cleopatra or Juliet\, more than twice as many lines as Lady Macbeth. In As You Like It\, Shakespeare’s version of Into The Woods\, we have not two\, not three\, but four romantically challenged couples wandering the forest of Arden. Without Rosalind\, they would never find each other\, much less true love. Shakespeare wrote As You Like It at the peak of his career\, right before Twelfth Night and Hamlet\, and it has been an audience favorite ever since. \nShakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love will guide you through As You Like It and\, in an interactive presentation\, hope to show you why they consider Rosalind Shakespeare’s greatest heroine and As You Like It his most interesting comedy. \nTo register and see more details\, visit the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Stephanie Kramer - Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Kramer is the author of Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work. This ‘labor’ or love was written over three years late at night and during her children’s naps because of her desire to create a groundswell of support. With original research and hundreds of inspiring interviews\, she does just that— sharing five powerful principles to find perspective\, create your balance\, cultivate community\, communicate your needs\, and embrace your shift in identity throughout each phase of pregnancy\, starting with the moment you decide you want to become a working mom-to-be. In Carry Strong\, Kramer flips the script. This isn’t about powering through pregnancy at work. It’s about being powerful and pregnant at work. \nKramer is a tenured beauty industry executive today serving as the Chief Human Resources Officer of L’Oréal USA in New York City and an adjunct professor of management communication in the graduate business program at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the proud mother of two young children and deeply believes that you can do it all\, not at the same time\, and absolutely not alone. \nThis author talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Woman’s Club. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6350.

SUMMARY:Space Race: The 20th C. Competition between Two Cold War Rivals
DESCRIPTION:The space race was a 20th century competition between two Cold War rivals\, the Soviet Union and the United States. The race\, who would be first to land a man on the Moon persisted nearly fifteen years. Each country claimed multiple victories along the journey. The competition spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites\, unmanned probes to many planets and human spaceflight in Earth orbit and to the Moon. All of these multi-million-dollar events occurred with computers featuring 100\,000 times less processing power than today’s typical mobile phone. It was dangerous work for the new heroes America called astronauts. The event that ended the competition required man to travel nearly 240\,000 miles from Earth. Winning the competition was considered necessary for each country’s national security. Learn more about how America ultimately won the race and the journey it required to achieve that goal. \nJohn Cilio is a historical storyteller\, author and researcher who has brought historical stories back to life for over 15 years. A member of the Organization of American Historians and the Association for the Study of Connecticut History\, he retired from IBM corporate marketing communications. He has published seven historical books and numerous articles for national and regional periodicals. \nRegistration is required. Please register online or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Allison Montclair - The Lady from Burma
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author talk at Wilton Library. \nIn Allison Montclair’s The Lady from Burma\, murder once again stalks the proprietors of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau in the surprisingly dangerous landscape of post-World War II London. \nIn the immediate post-war days of London\, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely\, if necessary\, business venture – The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks\, a woman with a dangerous – and never discussed – past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge\, a war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Mostly their clients are people trying to start (or restart) their lives in this much-changed world\, but their new client is something different. A happily married woman has come to them to find a new wife for her husband. Dying of cancer\, she wants the two to make sure her entomologist\, academic husband finds someone new once she passes. \nShortly thereafter\, she’s found dead in Epping Forest\, in what appears to be a suicide. But that doesn’t make sense to either Sparks or Bainbridge. At the same time\, Bainbridge is attempting to regain legal control of her life\, opposed by the conservator who has been managing her assets – perhaps not always in her best interest. When that conservator is found dead\, Bainbridge herself is one of the prime suspects. Attempting to make sense of two deaths at once\, to protect themselves and their clients\, the redoubtable owners of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau are once again on the case. \nAllison Montclair (a pseudonym for Alan Gordon) grew up devouring hand-me-down Agatha Christie paperbacks and James Bond movies. As a result of this deplorable upbringing\, Montclair became addicted to tales of crime\, intrigue\, and espionage. Montclair is the author of the award-winning Sparks & Bainbridge historical mystery series\, which begins with The Right Sort of Man. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:ArtScapades: The Harlem Art Explosion: From Innovation to Mainstream
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a fascinating and timely ArtScapades lecture\, “The Harlem Art Explosion: From Innovation to Mainstream\,” on Monday\, Jan. 29\, at 7 p.m. in the Brubeck Room. \nBlack History Month 2024\, which is celebrated in February\, is devoted this year to African Americans and the Arts. During the Harlem Renaissance of the early 20th Century\, the Harlem neighborhood in New York City became a Black cultural mecca. A social and artistic explosion resulted. It was a literary\, artistic\, and intellectual movement that kindled a new Black cultural identity\, and encouraged a new appreciation of folk roots and culture. \nIn “The Harlem Art Explosion\,” ArtScapades looks at three artists who were working in Harlem at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. William H. Johnson\, Romaire Bearden and Jacob Lawrence focused their art on African American culture and daily life in Harlem. \nRobin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman of ArtScapades\, began teaching art appreciation in 1998. They have presented at libraries\, art centers\, and museums in Connecticut\, New York\, New Jersey\, Massachusetts\, and Florida. \nRegistration in advance is suggested. by registering online or by calling 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence and Computers in Films
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a presentation on Films about computers and artificial intelligence (AI) have been a popular and thought-provoking genre in cinema\, exploring the potential consequences and ethical dilemmas associated with advanced technology. From classics like “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968) to modern blockbusters like “Ex Machina” (2014) and “Her” (2013)\, these films raise questions about the limits of human-robot interactions\, the consequences of unchecked AI development\, and the blurred lines between humanity and machines. Some films\, like “The Terminator” (1984) and “The Matrix” (1999)\, delve into the philosophical implications of AI\, while others\, like “WarGames” (1983)\, highlight the dangers of technology gone awry.
