DESCRIPTION:The Riverbrook Regional YMCA is proud to announce an encore this year to the Outdoor Benefit Concert\, Rock at The Y! Please join us on Saturday\, Sept. 17\, at the Wilton Family Y as we rock out to the music and sounds of The Tom Petty Project! \nIn its inaugural year\, while we were “Learning to Fly\,” we raised close to $100\,000! This generosity supports the Riverbrook Regional YMCA’s mission to be open and accessible to all — so that everyone in the communities of Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding has an opportunity to participate in Y membership\, programs\, services\, and social activities\, regardless of financial situation or ability. Initiatives supported through these dollars include the Y’s Financial Assistance Program; SWIMACCESS — free life-saving swim lessons for youth who do not know how to swim; and Summer Camp Assistance for Camp Gordyland in Wilton\, Camp Sunrise & Race4Chase Youth Triathlon Camps in Norwalk. \nNearly 225 folks came to R@TY last year and heard the sounds of TERRAPIN echo throughout the cool September evening. We know that over 300\, friends\, neighbors\, members\, and sponsors will join us this year for the Tom Petty Project. \nRock at The Y’s doors open to VIPs at 5:30 p.m. for food\, fellowship\, and fun with General Admission beginning to arrive at 6 p.m. This event boasts an array of food trucks including The Chamo\, Chef Jeff’s BBQ\, and Parlor Pizza with Gofer Ice Cream for dessert (all food vendors available to purchase). We also have great beverage sponsors including SoNo Brewing Company\, Tuck Gin\, wines from Aventine Hill\, and SoNo 1420! \nTickets are $75. For more information about tickets and Sponsorship Opportunities\, please visit the event website. For any additional information\, please contact Jarred S. Barnes\, Chief Development Officer\, via email or at 203.762.8384\, ext. 279. \nWe hope to see you at R@TY in just a few days!

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Dana Buckmir
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut native and author Dana Buckmir brings her story about surviving domestic violence and reclaiming her voice to Wilton Library during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Her most recent memoir\, Everything Will Be Okay\, will be the topic of conversation between Buckmir\, Chief Operating Officer of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center Ann Rodwell-Lawton\, and Deputy Chief Robert Cipolla from the Wilton Police Department. \nBuckmir is the author of Everything Will Be Okay and Plenty of Laughs: One Woman’s Journey Navigating the Online Dating Waters. She also contributes to a biweekly dating column called\, Oh Dana that gives advice on relationship topics. Buckmir believes that storytelling not only entertains\, but reminds us that we are sharing a collective experience that makes us a little more connected and a little less lonely. This philosophy and her teaching background inspired her to create a workshop and coaching program\, Write your story: From Idea to Publication\, where she mentors aspiring authors. \nAnn Rodwell-Lawton is the Chief Operating Officer of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC). Ann oversees DVCC’s community initiatives\, direct services programs\, and quality assurance efforts. Ann has worked in the fields of domestic violence and sexual violence for ten years. She integrates victim-centered approaches and brings a trauma-informed lens to the work at DVCC. \nBuckmir will be selling her book after the program and can accept cash\, check\, venmo\, or zelle as payment. \nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library\, the Domestic Violence Crisis Center\, the Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, the Wilton Police Department\, and Wilton Social Services. \nRegistration is required. Please register on the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Author Mark Oppenheimer Speaks on "Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library and the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism for an important talk\, “Pittsburgh and Beyond: Antisemitism from the 2018 Synagogue Shooting to Today\,” by Mark Oppenheimer\, on Monday\, March 25 at 7 p.m. Oppenheimer is a NY Times columnist\, Pulitzer grantee and the author of Squirrel Hill\, the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood. \nSquirrel Hill\, Pittsburgh is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in the country\, known for its tight-knit community and the profusion of multigenerational families. On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.
