SUMMARY:Privatization and Partnership is the New Space Frontier
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual program on new developments in space exploration presented by David Mestre\, Planetarium Director at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport on Tuesday\, July 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. \nHe will discuss what it takes to enter the new space economy and how NASA’s public/private partnerships are planting the seeds for future industries and markets. \nFrom building their own space port\, manufacturing reusable rockets\, and overseeing space operations\, companies like SpaceX and Boeing are launching American industry into a new space frontier. David Mestre joined the staff of the Discovery Museum\, Bridgeport\, CT in 2003\, becoming the Director of the Henry B. duPont III Planetarium. \nWith degrees in astronomy and astrophysics from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania\, David brings his passion for all things space in his work as an educator\, public speaker\, and scientist. \nNo charge. Online registration required to receive the Zoom invitation link. Questions: email Michael Bellacosa. Visit the library’s website for speaker details and to register.

SUMMARY:Looking Further Back Into the Universe & More
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library for a journey into the universe. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope was launched on December 25\, 2021. After 29 days of deployment\, several months of calibration\, and a one million-mile journey\, the telescope is sending back incredible images\, telling us more about the beginning of the Universe and raising more questions for further exploration. \nThis presentation by Andy Poniros will discuss the challenges of building and making the telescope operational: how the JWST will search for other Earth-like planets around other stars\, what it will tell us more about the early Universe after the Big Bang\, the telescope’s latest discoveries\, and future observations\, through audio\, video\, and striking images sent back from the JWST that are better than scientists had ever expected. \nAndy Poniros has been a NASA volunteer since 1997. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and has worked as a Medical Imaging Engineer for 48 years. He is a science correspondent & radio show host for a local Connecticut radio station\, an amateur astronomer\, and telescope maker. \nRegistration required. Please register online or call 203-762-6334. For more information\, contact asato@wiltonlibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Space Race: The 20th C. Competition between Two Cold War Rivals
DESCRIPTION:The space race was a 20th century competition between two Cold War rivals\, the Soviet Union and the United States. The race\, who would be first to land a man on the Moon persisted nearly fifteen years. Each country claimed multiple victories along the journey. The competition spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites\, unmanned probes to many planets and human spaceflight in Earth orbit and to the Moon. All of these multi-million-dollar events occurred with computers featuring 100\,000 times less processing power than today’s typical mobile phone. It was dangerous work for the new heroes America called astronauts. The event that ended the competition required man to travel nearly 240\,000 miles from Earth. Winning the competition was considered necessary for each country’s national security. Learn more about how America ultimately won the race and the journey it required to achieve that goal. \nJohn Cilio is a historical storyteller\, author and researcher who has brought historical stories back to life for over 15 years. A member of the Organization of American Historians and the Association for the Study of Connecticut History\, he retired from IBM corporate marketing communications. He has published seven historical books and numerous articles for national and regional periodicals. \nRegistration is required. Please register online or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.
