SUMMARY:Being on the Same Page - How Parents Can Remain Effective Partners When Raising Kids with Special Needs
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton will host Todd Kellogg\, a licensed family therapist and board-certified behavior analyst\, on Wednesday\, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wilton Library.  Kellogg will discuss how the difficulty of raising kids has increased exponentially along with the challenges of growing up in today’s world. For parents to be successful in guiding their children\, setting expectations\, and enforcing boundaries\, they need to find ways to work together and co-parent in a collaborative manner. \nMeeting the challenges of co-parenting is even more critical when kids have special needs. As parents of kids with special needs know\, everything is magnified and missteps can be that much more problematic for the child’s development. In this discussion\, Kellogg will walk you through best practices of co-parenting\, successful communication patterns\, and how to bounce back after setbacks. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Preparing Your Child and Yourself for a Successful Holiday Season
DESCRIPTION:For families of kids with special needs\, the holiday season is a mixed bag. While holiday celebrations are meant to be fun and exciting\, the realities of the season typically make them stressful and demanding. Routines and social schedules are frequently disrupted; travel tends to be hectic; “too many new people and places” cause anxiety and sensory overload; and expectations are likely to fall short. Although family members and friends may be well-meaning\, oftentimes they just don’t “get” our kids. For example\, they might not understand that our kids often need to self-regulate in ways they’re not used to: by crawling into a quiet\, soft space; laying on a cold surface; spending more—not less— time on screens; jumping on a trampoline—or mattress or couch— or chewing on a T-shirt. \nJustyna Balzar\, MEd\, BCBA\, co-founder of The Hangout Spot\, will join us for a short presentation\, followed by a lively discussion about strategies and scripts we can use to calm ourselves and our kids during particularly challenging times. \nWe will meet in a parent’s home in Wilton. (Registrants will receive the address specifics on November 6) \nRegistration is required.  Register online.

SUMMARY:Do You Live with a Picky Eater? How to Set Your Child on Track to Become a Better Eater
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library welcomes Todd Kellogg\, LMFT\, BCBA\, to present the community with explanations and solutions for how parents can help their children become better eaters. \nA picky eater is someone who eats a narrow and inadequate selection of food. Selective eating is a common challenge in children and\, to a degree\, in adults\, as well. The good news is that there is a wealth of evidence-based research providing practical behavior strategies on how to gradually increase the variety of foods your child will eat. \nIn this presentation\, Kellogg will explain selective eating/food refusal/picky eating and will offer strategies to promote healthy eating habits at home. \nThis in-person presentation at Wilton Library is offered by SPED*NET free of charge. Register online.

SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors. \nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place. \nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives. \nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon. \nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home. \nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. Addressing conflicts in a way that reduces challenging behaviors\, improves relationships\, and teaches critical skills;\n4. Dealing with problems before a behavior situation becomes escalated; and\n5. Building skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Jill Mays — "Nurturing Nature: Gardening for Special Needs"
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Thursday\, Feb. 6\, at 7 p.m. when the library along with SPED*NET will present an author talk with Jill Mays on her new book Nurturing Nature: A Guide to Gardening for Special Needs. While the guide is geared specifically toward individuals with special needs\, it has much to offer gardening groups of all ages and abilities as well as anyone starting out. \n“Nurturing Nature provides lots of practical\, fun gardening activities for children. They will learn that nature is much more interesting than electronic devices.”— Dr. Temple Grandin \nVulnerable populations — such as neurodiverse or physically challenged individuals — are at an elevated risk of suffering from isolation and stress-related illnesses. Gardening is a good solution since it proves beneficial to physical\, cognitive\, and emotional health. This book gives readers all the information and resources they’ll need to get started! \nMays is the author of Your Child’s Motor Development Story\, highlighting the crucial importance of sensory exploration and natural play for healthy development. An occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration for many years\, she has conducted workshops in a variety of settings and provided consultation to parents\, educators and health care providers. For the past 10 years she has immersed herself in gardening\, working with farmers and assisting in the development of children’s garden programs. She developed and currently leads a garden group for special needs adults. Mays lives with her husband\, Eric\, their Portuguese water dog and a flock of chickens at the far end of Cape Cod. \nSPED*NET\, Special Education Network\, Ltd.\, is a volunteer-run nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping parents of children with special needs become their children’s best advocates throughout the special services process and the transition to college\, employment or other post-secondary pursuits. The organization strives to empower parents\, support families and change the lives of children with special needs. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell copies of the book\, which Mays will sign. A portion of the proceeds benefits Wilton Library. \nRegistration is required. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.
