DESCRIPTION:All community members are welcome to join Wilton Library this spring to come together and read\, discuss and reflect upon The Great Divide by Cristina Henriquez for the eighteenth Wilton Reads event. For many years\, Wilton Reads has given the community an opportunity to sharpen views of themselves and the world around them. This year the focus is on the meaning of community and the collective history from diverse perspectives through insightful programming. \nTo encourage readership and to kick things off\, a limited number of hardcover copies of The Great Divide will be distributed to members of the community free of charge courtesy of Fairfield County Bank. Books will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, one per person\, in the Library lobby on Wednesday\, April 3 from 10 – 11 a.m. and from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.\, while supplies last.

DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special poetry seminar series with Judson Scruton as part of this year’s Wilton Reads program which features Cristina Henriquez’s The Great Divide\, an epic novel on the construction of the Panama Canal. His series will run on four Thursday mornings starting on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. They will distribute a packet with a detailed schedule of readings and links to the poems in advance. \nAs part of this year’s Wilton Reads\, Scruton will conduct four seminars mingling literary responses to two massive undertakings that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans:\n– the building of the Transcontinental Railroad (1863-1960) featuring poems by Bret Hart\, Walt Whitman\, Theodore Roethke\, and others.\n– the building of the Panama Canal (1904-1914) featuring Henriquez’s novel The Great Divide. \nAlthough he will make references to the novel throughout the series\, the fourth Thursday’s discussion will have the primary discussion related to the novel (April 25). \nScruton\, M.A. (Johns Hopkins University\, The Writing Seminars\, specializing in poetry)\, taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator\, Judson also directed publications\, communications\, public relations\, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and U.K.\, including the Newberry Library in Chicago. \nAdvance registration is required online or call 203.762.6334. There is no charge for this program. There is automatic registration for all four sessions upon registering for the first session. DESCRIPTION:Wilton Reads 2024 culminates with Wilton Library‘s author talk event featuring Cristina Henriquez\, acclaimed author of The Great Divide. \nThe Great Divide is a fascinating historical novel about the Panama Canal construction\, one of the greatest historical engineering feats. It importantly explores laborers\, locals\, activists\, doctors\, scientists\, and others interwoven stories. They are clearly the diverse unsung heroes who lived and worked alongside the massive project. They also witnessed firsthand the human cost of progress as they fought to survive amid turmoil and disease. \nThe Great Divide is a TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick\, an Indie Next Pick\, a LibraryReads Pick. It has been named a Best of the Month Pick by Amazon\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times as well. \nHenriquez wrote four books\, including The Book of Unknown Americans\, a New York Times Notable Book of 2014 and one of Amazon’s Top 10 Best Books of the Year. It was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. \nHenriquez is also the author of The World in Half and Come Together\, Fall Apart: A Novella and Stories. She additionally earned the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation Award\, a grant by Sandra Cisneros honoring her father. Obtaining her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduating from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, Henriquez now lives in Illinois. \nWiltonian Joanna Ecke will interview Henriquez. Ecke taught public high school English for many years and leads several literary discussion groups at Wilton Library. \nHenriquez will receive the Grodin Family Fine Writers Award. \nThis program will be recorded and available for viewing for 30 days after the event. \nElm Street Books will sell copies and Henriquez will sign after the presentation.
